If I wanted to get portamento/glide when using MIDI File Playback, would I need to bake the portamento into the MIDI files somehow? Since I have a Disting EX and the MIDI breakout, would it be more advisable to pull up the MIDI File Playback algo on one side and route the MIDI out of the breakout and back into a MIDI/CV algo on the other side in order to configure glide?
Thanks! (And well spotted :-). I used to start my live set with Fur Alina played on the Push - with the first repeat dry, and the second repeat using MPE pressure to bring up the Kirbinator wet level so little stochastic sprinkles get added to the long spaces between notes.
I already own 2 ex's with the big screen. Just can’t wait to get this beauty in my case. After all those videos I watched I could imagine this module could be the heart of my case.
three months! wow... you guys did really well to keep this under wraps haha not tried the Kirbinator yet... I am mainly a "drone artist" so would have to think how I get it to fit in great interview, thanks 👍
Thanks! I actually really like the Kirbinator on drones - I usually pipe the Dream Machine into it. Works nicely with glides down a fifth and an octave to fill out the sound - especially if you blur it out a bit with reverb.
@@doublewah thank you so much for this tip, Simon my current monster drone patch = Attenuverter LFO 1 Dream Machine 1 LFO 2 Dream Machine 2 Granulator Kirbinator Chorus Reverb totally overindulgent, of course, but I love it as a lush background that I can play my guitar over cheers, andy
Will be so interested to hear what you make of it, as you are a DataBender master! (I can already guess you're going to suggest adding a "hold" feature for the buffer ;-)
Unfortunately it's not currently in a fit state for sharing, sorry! If I get time to tidy it up I might do that (but motivation to do so is not as high as it was because the NT version is already way waaaay better!)
I had been holding off on what would be the last modules put in the case: you released this, and I reorganized just to have it!! Ordered, waiting, reading T.F.M. ( they're always excellent).
Wow! That’s a WHOLE LOTTA DISTING! Congrats Os. This feels like a really big moment for you. There’s a lot of modules vying for the “virtual modular within a module” category and your interface certainly SEEMS like it makes way more intuitive sense than 80% of the competition! Really looking forwards to the day I install mine. I’ll use knurlies, I promise ;)
Unfortunately the Teletype code is released under GPL-2.0 which as I understand it would preclude it being used in a closed-source project such as this.
I suppose the only way it could work would be as an app which retained its gpl2 license separate from the firmware but could be installed and ran on it somehow.
The Kirbinator sounds a bit similar to what I can do with Strymon Magneto. Why Does this sound so nice? This stuttering, breaks, reversed loops? lovely demo : )
Can the midi song player output to cv and gate? I would love to be able to sequence a song in my DAW, output it to the module, and then playback live with my modules for performances.
Hey, looks really interesting... ! But one or two questions before buying... Are the LFO able to be synced with an incoming clock ? And, I'm looking for a FX (delay, reverb) where I can manipulate the "send" - not the mix! If these two things possible, I'm in ;-)
There's no LFO clock sync at the moment, but it's a shoe-in for a future update. If the effects can't be set up as you want them, you could combine them with a mixer algorithm which *does* have a send.
I've looked at the manual and there seems to be a lot of the ex single algorithm present but i didn't find the looper. I like it a lot on the EX and i thought that this new interface would be a great fit for it. Did you not implement it because it doesn't fit well in the module "paradigm" of having algorithms plug into each others?
There will definitely be a Looper. I've not done it yet because I wanted to reconsider what was possible on this platform rather than blindly re-implement the EX looper, which is very much designed around the capabilities of the EX.
@@ExpertSleepersLtd wow, that's going to be so good. That could be crazy cool to have a module that does something akin to the 1010 blackbox among other things. Thank you for your answer.
Yo dawg, I heard you like modular so we put a modular in your modular... Also Roland, you may take notes, that's one way to make a usable menu diving menu.
How exciting yet another Disting. I've owned every version of the Disting modules. I love my EX and it's more than I need already....except for that microscopic display.
kind of a dumb question and I know it is not the intended use-case, but could you effectively use the 2 remaining jacks to swap between the 2 TRS midi standards if you interconnected them and swapped the tip/ring?
The logical flow and layout of the UI is so straightforward it looks simple, but it is actually brilliant. I can see where I might use the manual to get started and then forget about it. And it sounds great, too. Not half as complicated as any alternatives, either.
meta is a port of a pre-existing piece of software(that is frankly annoying to use even with a mouse and computer screen). This is built from the ground for this hardware. Very different.
Sounds amazing !!! Are the presets here seriously all out of the module - the sequencing / samples / fx? And the modules comes with this installed so you can pull apart and change etc? (Have a couple of ex’s sequenced by teletype). Will this work with teletype out of the box or will there be a new set of operators?
Yup. The presets are documented in some detail here: github.com/expertsleepersltd/distingNT/tree/main/presets The NT uses the same i2c stuff as the EX so it should just work.
Os leans hard into the Disting mind set. It's like Elektron stuff. It's an acquired taste. They are super feature rich, but the complexity has a cost. My only suggestion for Os is to enlist the help of someone not so close to the development to do instructional / demo stuff. Someone skilled, but not so close to Expert Sleepers. I feel like the audience would connect with them better. You would get a lot of comments like "this tripped me up, and here is what I did". Just a suggestion.
I've involved more people than ever before in a fairly lengthy beta process for this module, so a lot of those little details have already been worked out.
amazing work. would love to see the quad looper algo demo'ed on this, I imagine it makes the use of the looper in live performance a lot more comfortable/feasible.
Superb to see the Disting family grow, but I am sure this 5 button machine will make me even more confused about which button does what, just like with the Mk4 and EX I already own. It will all be worth it though, so thank you for your hard work!
