Personally, I think Rocky Mountain Way, as a song in Triumph's setlist, overstayed its welcome. By the time Just a Game was released, it should have been axed and replaced by any better "original" song they they never played live. They never included enough material live of whatever record they were currently touring for. The setlists from tour to tour weren't all that drastically different. All that being said, they were the soundtrack of my youth, and were my favorite band growing up. Ive just been a little critical of their decision making throughout their career.

The song Drive was written by Ric for Bebe. She was going through a rough period in her life and was drinking alot and was called to pick her up from the Paradise Rock Club. As he was driving her home to Maine from the Paradise club in Boston where she had just done a performance with her band. During the drive up 95 from Massachusetts to Maine he asked her, who’s gonna drive you home? Who’s gonna pick you up when you fall? The lyrics became what we know today as the song Drive. Ric said this in an interview.

yeah good review and that sounds like it would be a voyage of discovery rather than just backing up what you already know. it's a brave choice from the label though: obvs people who care scritti politti are a great band and to hear born to be is to be forever smitten but they are much more than techno pop as your guest suggested. after the rain by the comsats really is a classic. abby recently went into 80's land with Springsteen and asked us what would be interesting to continue with. i think you Joe would be more able to give her advice on this score. i think i've said before on your pages that i like the women in rock themes, hearing them express their creative experience in music or as content creators. have you heard of the Larsland channel or vinyl friday? as a creator yourself maybe you'll find their current careers interesting too. thanks Joe good quality content that actually aids the industry and generates interest in the music.

I asked Abby about her feelings regarding '80s music and she said there's a style of '80s music production that just doesn't work for her... which I understand! That production definitely works for me! But not everybody, so I get it. I wish she would cover more '80s acts, and maybe she will as her channel continues to grow. I would definitely encourage her on that, and I'm always happy to send some recommendations! Maybe I'll ask her about it again next time we collab. Now I was not familiar with either Fathom (Vinyl Friday) or Larsland, but I'm glad you mentioned them! I'm checking out their channels now and I am impressed -- I agree with you about appreciating female perspectives on music. Listening to them helps me pick up on things I might have missed otherwise. So thanks for the heads up! I'll watch more of their stuff and make a note for potential future projects. Also -- thanks for watching!

@PlayThatPodcast

Yeah there's definitely more to the story. Danny Joe absolutely had ongoing serious health problems... but that was not the ONLY reason he left the band. Lots of drinking and fighting played a role too. Various original members of the band have said as much.

Despite all the chuckles and joking it’s not a cute story. He was fortunate that he wasn’t murdered or kidnapped. As for his wife, well we don’t even want to consider the possibilities. They were very foolish walking by themselves at night. He really should have gone to some other country on the list. Then he could have invited and paid for Fela to visit for the recording. I used to be somewhat of a Fela fan and still have some recordings. I saw him play a show one time. It was in a big room in Philadelphia in the late ‘80s. And no one robbed me when I was walking back to my car. He was supposed to have played the gig on an earlier date but canceled pretty much without warning. So a lot of us had to drive there twice. But that was Fela. I’m just glad he showed up at all.

One of my friends wold get hired as the drummer in the 80s for these partial, left-over 50/60s bands that would roll through town and have shows at dinner clubs. No rehearsal, just handed him a few charts and told him to stick to it, no solos or freelancing, lol! Like one band member was even related to anybody in the original band.

Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek or Ric and Ben, were quite the pair. They seemed co-joined in an intriguing almost mysterious way as if they had something between them you didn’t have. Ben, with his amiable personality and rockstar good looks, was always the focus of any performance of the two of them or with the bands they fronted. If anyone had the goods to make it, Ben had it. Ric, with his lanky frame and face was their manager, promoter, leader and hanger-on. Hanger-on because he didn’t have any musical talent to speak of. He was a third rate singer at best. If they made it, it would be because of Ben’s musical talents, not Ric’s - that’s how it seemed…then. Rick had this slick, huckster like quality, which he brought to most of his interactions. They had some cred because of the Milkwood album. It was also clear they hadn’t gotten very far because of Milkwood. “I’ve been listening to Patti Smith. I can’t tell you what effect listening to her music has had on me!” Ric Ocasek told me over the phone back in 1976. He and I would talk occasionally after I returned to Vermont having failed in my efforts as a lead singer to get a recording contract, to front a popular drawing crowd band, to get noticed at all. I knew of Patti Smith. I hadn’t bought any of her albums, but I was tuned to the groundswell about her at that time. There was a seriousness and an openness in his voice I hadn’t heard before. He sounded genuinely moved. That was the last time I spoke to Ric. I joined a band called Zzebra. As lead singer of Zzebra, I, we, the world, started hearing about the Cars. Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr made it. They made it big. I still listen to their music quite regularly because I truly enjoy it, for what it represents: pop/rock music with a synthesized, digitized, forward leaning, art/rock, yet, rooted sensibility. Rick Ocasek found his voice …big time. Patti Smith and the punk/new age music explosion of the times freed him to express himself on his own terms. He doesn’t sound like Patti Smith (but if you knew him and how he sounded earlier you can understand how hearing Patti Smith opened up floodgates for him), he sounds like Ric Ocasek. I get goosebumps at times, recognizing he shared that with me. I’ve always acknowledged I never found my voice as a singer, as good of a vocalist as I might’ve been. Knowing someone who did find their voice the way Ric found his gives me a sense of satisfaction. As good of a vocalist and as charismatic of a personality Ben Orr was (he sang their number one signature song, “Just What I Needed,” and “Drive” - the ones that Ric wrote that needed Ben’s melodic good voice) he never matched his partner’s unique and singular sound and voice. As the far weaker singer, Ric became the dominant voice and icon of the group, despite his vocalist shortcomings. His vocal personality became the signature sound of the group. How far would the Cars have gotten with Ben as the sole voice, like Roger Daltry with the Who? We will never know.

My only complaint with the new lineups has been the lack of multiple guitar players. You don't need all three - but to only have one is sacrilege. it would be like going to see iron Maiden or Boston with only one guitar player. Doesn't have the same impact.

Inexcusable. I met him 8 times and we got to hang out some . What a charming guy … I was nervous to meet him since his reputation preceded him . (Trouble waiting to happen.) He immediately put me at ease and we talked for quite a while in Memphis before and after a show about the time “Hindu Love Gods” LP was released. I had a vinyl copy and he had not yet SEEN one so he poured over every inch of the cover, inner sleeve and vinyl itself meticulously . I ask if he would sign one album but he cheerfully cheerfully signed my whole LP collection and 2 copies of that Rolling Stone magazine. I treasure the conversations I had with Warren . I’m here to tell you the man was a genius . 🎸❤️✌️

BUT.... she cashed dem PAYCHECKS, though. Bet she didn't dislike those. I get it. She's an artist and cynical. Most good artists don't want to do trite, childish popular dumbed-down stuff. Totally get it. But dem PAYCHECKS, though. She can definitely move on from that kind of song and do whatever she wants now that she has those.... PAYCHECKS. Most people work 40 years and struggle. She at least should be grateful for .... ok... dem paychecks.

Starship featuring Mickey Thomas (and Stephanie) is the current superior version of the entity that was once “Jefferson Airplane/Starship.” It was classless for members of the original Jefferson Starship to have sued the 80s Jefferson Starship with Mickey Thomas for naming rights, when they all voluntarily left the band. Mickey carried that band through the 80s. What’s even more astonishing is that the current Jefferson Starship has the gall to perform “Starship” songs live - songs *after* the settlement to which they weren’t connected in any way. Mickey Thomas’s version has better singers as well, with Mickey and Stephanie plus fans get the entire legacy of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship in their set list.
