This is a classic example of how musicians and non-musicians hear music differently. The biggest example of all time was The Beatles, followed closely by KISS. You musicians know what I'm talking about.
I'm sorry I'm not objective here... Duane Allman was in the top 20 "musicians" of the 20th century. You can listen to Duane's playing and his phrasing had little nuances that you only notice after listening to them for years. He wasn't just a slide player he wrote a riff that is in the top five riffs of all time namely the opening riff from Layla. That he was not given writing credit on that is a crime. Derek is a good player but even Butch Trucks mentioned it had become predictable. Duane was never predictable and never boring.
They don’t even compare in the first place (hence the slide stuff) Duane is primarily a soulful blues player whereas Derek is more influenced by world music n abstract Jazz
any comparison to the guitar playing of duane allman is ABSOLUTLEY FUTILE!!!! his technique, phrasing, passion,knowledge and ABOVE ALL THOSE SOUNDS HE PRODUCED are beyond any possible equal!! he was simply otherworldly
He’s answered questions like that many times with the same answer... and I am proud of him for it. Guitar playing is not about who is better or who is faster... Music is to be enjoyed by everyone.
It's like when someone asks you who your favorite guitarist is, I just can't answer it. So many great players, rock, blues and jazz players, YIKES. But, in the list of great players, the list will have Duane, Derek, Warren, Dickey and many many more.
Nah, this isn't the best Duane lick. It's probably the fastest. But Duane's thing was soul and creativity. My vote for best Duane lick is the intro solo in "Loan Me a Dime" by Boz Skaggs. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
