I downloaded this video 8 years ago and have never built the sheller and nowadays it will cost three times as much for the materials. So much for procrastination.🤦🏼‍♂️

I've been making these traps for a long time and now someone is trying to sue me because they say they invented them in 2009. They've been around long before that!! If anyone can show me a youtube video, advertisement, website, Facebook post or other evidence that is authentic from 2008 or earlier showing a similar carpenter bee trap made out of wood with a bottle at the bottom - - I've got a couple hundred $$ to send you to make it worth your while!!

Great job of teaching everyone who wanted to know how to build this machine. I’m going to start building next week. I also need more information on the building and components of the flapper. Thanks again the video.

You all guys made the best video I've seen yet with a bean thrasher. Thank you for the fine documentation. Where does one get the plans for such a thing. Would you have to change drums to do purple hulls or just that lid to the basket?

At 12:24 your video shows the rotating circular cage that you spent great detail in describing how to build, but we are suddenly witness to a new and critical component spinning at a higher speed inside of this cage; a very necessary part of the shelling operation that you never once talked about while building the unit - you call them "the flappers" but I have no idea what they are made of or how they are attached to the 3/4" shaft. Are you purposefully omitting that critical detail, or did you forget it, or did I somehow miss their design parameters when watching videos 1 & 2?

I see that at 2:23 that the 1 inch X 2 inch X 24 inch strips of wood are held on the shaft by "U" clamps with 1/4-20 washers & nuts. I would use nylon insert nut, so they would not back off. NOTE: the wood may need to be 23-1/2 inches each, so not to hit the cage wall. Great job thanks.

I have a thought... You can buy sticky mouse trap glue in bulk. If you dribbled some of that down into the trap bottle, maybe that would keep them from escaping when you change bottles. That is... if the smell of the glue does not detract the bees. Just a thought.

Great video, Cecil! I have a question. You did not describe much about the pieces of wood that go inside the thrasher, How long are they relative to the barrel? Additionally, are they turning in the same or opposite direction as the barrel? I followed everything in the video except for this last step. How are the beans being separated from their shells?
@MrMunchiemo

That is Awesome!!! I always wondered how butter beans are shelled with a machine. I have a Taylor pea sheller and I don't think it would do butter beans. It would flatten them. Thanks for posting.

Cecil, why do you angle the 1/2" holes upwards? We have hundreds of carpenter bees, and I inspected the holes; I can't tell if they are angled or not...

Thank you, sir, for taking the time to make this video. I have a carpenter bee here and there every summer but this spring they are more numerous and aggressive. I built a trap and hung it beneath an enclosed porch where the bees were drilling. This morning, the first warm day that the bees were out I trapped several. I didn't even realize that so many were in my yard. It worked perfectly! Many thanks.
@KristenM1030
@KristenM1030 8 лет назад
They may seem aggressive but in actuality they're really not. The males are the ones you mainly see flying around, females stay in their holes most of the time, and the males you see don't have stingers, so they can't hurt you. These bees are vital to the environment, so they should be left alone, not trapped and killed...

Kristen Miller The year I made this trap I caught over two hundred of these bees in two weeks. Then I removed the traps and have not put them up again. Since then I see a few but never in the numbers I saw that one summer. I had an infestation and this trap helped. The house we bought had been abandoned and was overrun. Since then we have made peace and my deck has not collapsed.

You made a very good video. Everything explained clearly. I will make some traps like this today. I still dont' know why the bees don't come out. I have put up mouse glue traps and they get stuck but it can't hold them. Who would think they are stronger than a mouse?

FANTASTIC!!!! Very good machine. I wonder if it would be just as good with dried kidney beans and black eyed beans. You have very good knowledge and you have the wisdom on how to apply it. I just moved to Central America ( Panama ) and i want to grow some beans for eating. I would love to have the plans for your sheller and try to make one. Again FANTASTIC! Thank You

Thank You for this video Cecil. We've had to replace two posts on our privacy fence because of the damage these bees have done weakening the 4X4s. It was no easy task digging 4 feet of lumber set in concrete and I don't want to have a repeat experience anytime soon.

Thank-you, I could sure use this on the farm. They love all this fresh wood I use for framing. My friend told me these bees made a perfect 9/16" hole. I know you said to use a 1/2" size so I'll give it a try. Very innovative!

Thats a very nice job Cecil. You are very talented. I noticed the aluminum brake in the background. I've done a little siding and seamless gutters in my lifetime. I really want to build one of these but it looks like its gotta be huge to be effective. I'm still thinking on it. Anyway, once again, Great JOB!!
