@@frontier-films i just got out of the BWCA today. Great trip and video coming soon. Ya that was extremely surprising to see that wolf in such populated area! Knife is a nice lake!
@@Kyle-jg9zl hey, thx for watching. I’m pretty novice on the fly fishing myself. I just like to throw dry flies. I have had success with parachute Adam’s. Seems to work for most situations I have been in on the Alpine lakes and streams.
Really enjoyed your video! Have hiked all around the Ponca area, but never the BRT. You gave me a good overall sense of what the trail is like. Thanks for sharing and I'll be checking out some of your other videos too!
@@SoloSchmitty Thanks for answering. I've watched all of your Quetico series and the Border Route series. Great Stuff!!! I'm also a fan of the Buffalo River.
@@JohnNash-o4u Thats awesome, I really appreciate it! Thats great you got some time on the buffalo as well. Its my winter go to for hiking and canoeing. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. Appreciate ya!
super video ! I also enjoyed the music ! I was wondering if a pair of lightweight trekking poles would have helped, especially on the down hill to absorb some impact. You really covered some ground and elevation gain/loss.
Hey thanks for checking it out and taking the time to comment! I have never used hiking poles mainly because I am carrying a tripod and camera. Otherwise yes I think poles would have been helpful. I have hike in september that will be about 60 miles off trail so I am looking at some poles for that trip. Will also be potential of snow and glacier crossing so probably going to go that route. Any recommendation?
@@SoloSchmitty Years ago when I was still young enough to tackle high mountain backpack treks I got myself a pair of LEKI trekking poles. LEKI is a German company it was started after World War II, by the Lenharts who were refugees from Czech Bohemia, they left their country in 1946 without possessions. They made a new home in Germany. At the time I bought them, early to mid 1980's they were considered the 'top of the line' in terms of quality. I put these poles through many years of some tough trips and they got beat up pretty good but they always did the job. You can still get that brand at REI but they will run you $ 150-$200, if you can afford that I would say they would be well worth it ! I also have a pair of very inexpensive trek poles I got at Walmart a few years back, like $ 15 they are Ozark brand I believe and quite frankly am surprised they have held up as well, but in truth they have not been put through the same rigor and stress as the LEKI poles. I was taking a look at your route I was wondering why you didn't start from Battle Park trailhead instead of Hunter trailhead but I am guessing you chose Hunter cause it was only a couple miles from the pavement whereas Battle Park looks like 10 miles from pavement- although Battle Park would have been closer to Solitude Lake, etc. I have done most of my high altitude trips here in the Eastern Sierra but sort of retired from it recently as I am almost 70 now with some recent lower back and shoulder injuries. But maybe I will get up to Cloud Peak Wilderness, someday, who knows ?
Had never heard of this trail. Just found your channel while researching Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge and your video popped up. Look forward to checking out the rest of your videos. 🤝🏻
Beautiful scenery and some magnificent images captured on camera! One minor suggestion, though. With all the open source music available, surely you can come up with more than a single clip of ONE song for an hour long video! It would help. A lot!
@@SoloSchmitty love your videos. Got a trip coming up in the Killarney provincial park and I've always struggled bringing a sit on top kayak through the portages and trying to find a lightweight solo canoe in my price range. 2,400 max. Any recommendations? I'm more of a fishermen than a paddler
@@devanschmitt8134 thank you! This canoe is a good choice. 30 lbs is great for the portages. Enjoy your trip, Killarney looks like an awesome spot! Look for a used one. You could get that range
I got a really blue one in Quetico last year (I got it on a video on my channel) Never knew there were purple ones! That would be cool to see! Thanks for watching and the info, much appreciated!
Haha ya I think you are right. Could have stayed on any of those lakes for a week and never got bored! Next time. Thx for watching and taking the time to comment!
Nice trip! Heading back to Sarah in June for the exact reasons you stated in your summary. Spent a week just on Sarah last year and fell in love. Didn’t even get to explore it all.
@@SoloSchmitty We move pretty high speed, low drag. Got into Sarah on Day 1 but got a tow to PP from LaTourelles. Glad we did, Moose Lake can get angry and it was howling. My kid was sleeping in the bow as we crossed Sarah to our campsite. Great memories.
I'm an old fart who just discovered your Quitico series. I'm about to start my third (this one) because I've done that trip, close to your route, 5 times. The real reason I'm commenting is to ask if I recognized a Razorback hat on your cranium???
Yes, it is an Arkansas hat. Not specific to the razorbacks though. I spend alot of the winter in Arkansas and Missouri hiking and canoeing. The Buffalo River in Arkansas is a special spot for me and I have a handful of videos on my channel from there. Cool you have done this Quetico route, its a beauty. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you commenting!
Awesome video man! Just found it! I’v spent an awful lot of time in this area from doing bomber from the hunter trailhead and west ten sleep along with cloud from west side and multiple other attempts of peaks and repeated peaks due to weather was not able to accomplish them. Love the mountains. So unique in comparison to any other ranges.
Cool! Sounds like you could teach me a lot about the area. I wish I was closer. I really didn’t know what to expect from this area and was so impressed! I definitely want to come back soon. If you have any must see routes please let me know. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it!
@@SoloSchmitty I love the first part of the trail the most from the hunter to solitude as it’s where iv spent most time. It’s just beautiful. Being up there on a week day is just amazing. No one around or anything.
I'd take a 2 week vacation in the Canadian wilderness over vacationing down South any day ! It looks so peaceful and beautiful scenery ❤ Do you use a Thermacell to repell the mosquitos and black flies?
I hear ya on that! It’s hard to beat. After this trip I will definitely consider bringing a thermacell. Would have been really nice at camp. Good idea! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Watched every episode 4 times I bet now, and every bit of 4 bottles of wine along with it. Had already spoken to Bruce at Wabakimi Outfitters to book my first solo this September, but your video changed my mind and booked Quetico last week instead. Fervent follower to the channel now, bravo 👏
Haha that’s awesome! Really means a lot to hear you enjoyed and it was helpful. Wabakimi definitely a bucket lister from I have heard but I don’t think you would be dissapointed at all withQuetico. I hope to hear what you decide and please reach out if you have any questions about solo tripping. Thanks again!
Been to Wabakimi 3 times with a friend, it should be on anyone’s bucket list for a true wilderness experience. A must for sure. And yes, I just may do that before I head out in August for a few tips and courage 👍
@@SoloSchmitty Not 100%. There have been reports for years and one had to be put down near Greybull. Always pays to expect them. Not very common but there is a possibility.
Glad you enjoyed it. Its a beautiful area. I hope to get back there soon to explore more. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I appreciate it!
Nice trip. Gonna hit Wyoming again. Actually I'd like to buy a place out there. I hiked in the Tetons with the elk screaming their heads off last October. Pretty cool! Thanks for the vid.
Hi David, long time since I have heard from you. Congrats on your BRT through hike! We met at the beginning of me getting into backpacking, glad to hear you are still at it! Stay in touch.
Thanks for the upload. It was a nice way to end the winter season and ring in spring. Your Winds trip should be an epic backpacking experience, as it is my favorite place on the planet. I’ve decided to do the Solitude loop trail this summer/fall in the Bighorns after watching you conquer the Peak Wilderness. Thanks for the inspiration, Schmitty.
So glad you enjoyed it! A little different kind of vid for me but I had fun making it. Glad to hear you got the bug to go to the Big Horns! If you love theWinds you will be right at home in the Horns. Extremely excited to get back to the Winds, it’s been a few years and I have been wanting to get back since I left! Can’t tell you how much I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Means alot!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I appreciate when others use maps in their videos as well so I thought I would try it! Thanks again!
Yes it is! And you are correct, most people focus on the west side of the state. This area has a lot to offer as well. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!
