It's weird how he's both right and wrong at the same time. Like, some of the best filmmakers are cinephiles. At the same time, a person who is not as well-versed in film may have something far more interesting to say in the medium.

Even Hitchcock said he didnt care about the content but handling the material.

I've watched a ton of films and still manage to come up with semi-unique ideas for my own stuff. It all depends on what sort of thing you're trying to make, sometimes you want something akin to a Tarantino film with lots of homages and sometimes you want something very personal that only you could make. Don't limit yourself.
