Typical & sadly so common.. This buncha guys & just a single gal, and her bright inquiry goes entirely avoided. God ! Is it due to body shame..after-all so many males over weight- plump, out of shape & absent of much to do with healthiness & exciting physical happenings are men over they're late 60's, give up erections so certainly any topic remotely associated with ones ass or penis is to be entirely side stepped, some what out of shame I suspect🎐 Thats my guess anyway ! Toileting & the lack of is a crucial aspect of life over water. Women care more for the environment then men so it figures in when discussions get to the point around dumping any sort of craps into the wonderful sea environment. My truck camper has always been outfitted with a Thedfort cassette toilet. Piss into a jug..poop into the lue..then dump out 1-2 weeks later into a public pump toilet.. Women & men..wow what a contrast !Interesting Roger had zero response considering his love Mary accompanies- co- skippers & jointly P's & Poop's- could of made.for an entirely entertaining response to this important inquiry.

I think "The Voyage of Jack de Crow" is a masterpiece and wonderfully wonderfully funny. I was glad of the question about the loss of the jib. I recall Mirrors had two mast step positions, the forward one being for sailing with mainsail only. I suspect "Jack", after losing his jib, may have continued on with the mast in the aft position, which would have impaired his sailing ability.

I watched this entire chat in the night. I know Roger Barnes and have often sailed with him in informal gatherings and at the Semaine du Golfe (week at the Golfe du Morbihan, south Brittany). He is highly experienced and someone I esteem greatly. I take his book "The Dinghy Cruising Companion" with me on my boat, and a problem can often be solved by the methods he gives. However, I have come to the stage of the "via media" between the camping dinghy and the big white yacht - the ballasted trailer-sailor. I really do appreciate my tiny cramped cabin, but which is a place that gives me dryness for electronics, clothes, paper charts and books, etc. I don't go far out to sea, except my last time to the Isle of Hoëdic (6 miles from the mainland and 6 miles from the island = 12 miles). With my long keel, I have a shallow draught, 0.60m - water up to my thighs, so can explore shallow water. I have found that dinghies and trailer-sailors go together quite well at cruising gatherings with no racing involved. I still have progress to make with my video-editing between the ones with wind and water noise and my voice, or silenced and with music. I try to convey that magical world of the sea. In the words of Jules Verne's Captain Nemo: "The sea is the be all and end all! It covers seven-tenths of the planet earth. Its breath is clean and healthy. It's an immense wilderness where a man is never lonely, because he feels life astir on every side. The sea is simply the vehicle for a prodigious, unearthly mode of existence; it's simply movement and love; it's living infinity, as one of your poets put it." "Our globe began with the sea, so to speak, and who can say we won't end with it! Here lies supreme tranquillity. The sea doesn't belong to tyrants. On its surface they can still exercise their iniquitous claims, battle each other, devour each other, haul every earthly horror. But thirty feet below sea level, their dominion ceases, their influence fades, their power vanishes! Ah, sir, live! Live in the heart of the seas! Here alone lies independence! Here I recognise no superiors! Here I'm free!"

So sorry to have missed this opportunity but thanks to Kheim and Roger and everyone who participated. Special thanks to Meredith for solving the 'Dinghy Sailing Gender Gap' and confirming Roger's nature over nurture theory at the same time! Being new to sailing I have been giving this some thought to this indelicate topic as pretty sure its a problem for men of a certain age as well as women. Think the answer for women is actually gadgets - while not solving the problem entirely does seem to largely bridge the gap! I'm also a bit of a lurker rather than sailor but hope to join you all on a few Raids soon-ish.

Terrific discussions! I must say, I also really like the parts in Roger's videos where he narrates slowly as we hear the sounds around his boat. I went through some times with higher anxiety in the last couple of years, and listening to those vids was a soothing salve. I listen to them in my truck over the stereo system. I also like when he shows where they're going on the paper charts (maps?). Good questions everyone.

Western Australia demands we register our boats 'if they can be fitted with an engine - which means you soft soap and pile on the charm with any water police that come near you.
@MrResiman

Quite aware of the WA rules, I guess we will have to register when we have a 1 hp electric motor on our sailboat and pay the registration fee or we may be sent to gaol!

Thank you all for this video. Simply wonderful. What a great idea to have these chats, and I particularly like Meredith's question near the end. I imagine there would be an opportunity for someone to organize a reciprocal arrangement a bit like house sitting. Wouldn't that be wonderful. Ever since Dylan Winter started his Keep Turning left series, I've wondered how easy it would be to either purchase a dinghy over there for a couple of months or hire one somehow. I've particularly liked his what the Americans call gunk-holing just as much as I've enjoyed Rogers videos. It was great to see Gene asking some pertinent questions. Great stuff.

Thanks for all involved in this great interview especially Sandy obviously On my fourth read of this classic, total coincidence was reading about the English channel crossing as I did the same (on a Ferry) and then was in Saint Quentin as in the book you passed through. Currently in Germany near the Alps so suspect the coincidences have ended. Looking forward to hearing about the next adventure, frequently canoe at Benson

There's a FB group at raid.sydney if you have more questions about building :-).

Guys you were indeed very privileged to see and interact with that grey dolphin in the lake north of Violet Hill. You may have noticed that the grey dolphin has blue eyes. The grey dolphins frequent Port Stephens Bay and the open ocean. That is their territory which they guard fiercely. Then we have the Myall River dolphins who are black with brown eyes and their territory is the full length of the Myall River. It is rare to see the river dolphins around the bottom lake at Mungo but it does happen. The river dolphins, like the bay dolphins, are also very territorial and fights ensue, should either seek to venture the other's territory. So that is what makes your sighting of a grey bay dolphin such a unique and special event. Had you not captured it on film, I probably would not have believed it possible.
@raidsydney6635

Thanks Jasper, and here we were feeling proud that it only took us a few seconds to realise that it wasn't a shark :-). I didn't realise that there were two species in the lakes (I've heard them in the river and seen them bow ride the Tea Gardens ferry). The other dinghies that came through before us that morning reported dolphin encounters in the same spot (ours was about a kilometre east of the last starboard channel marker) but I don't know if it was the grey.
