Oh man, I'm just discovering this now. I moved to Houston, in 1980 and made it a point to get to know the state. Fell in love with all the varieties of Texas music. Even Austin still had a little bit of its Old Magic left. Of course that would be gone before the end of the decade. I saw Joe Ely in Luckenbach with an opening act called Tejana (Texana?) Dames or Gals, something like that. I believe it was a sister act. Heh, that memory just shook loose from the cobwebs... It was a GREAT show.
May her memory be a blessing. thanks for posting i also was there, about 6 feet to the left of you, seated on a speaker tower (?) just a side note, the melody is the same as richard farina's "birmingham sunday"
Paula Cole what more can you say,'Happy Home' is always a favorite of mine, what a fine composition, and love this particular performance! Thanks for the share!
I love this, the performance bears all the hallmarks of the great composer, plus possible 'herbal inspiration' ? (new improvised sections, forgetting lyrics, lol)
Exactly how I remember them. The Joe Ely Band played many times at Fat Dawg's in Lubbock when I worked there in 1976. They would only book him when Tech was on break, otherwise the crowd would be too large. This video is almost the exact playlist they played then. Man, they were good! Sometimes they would finish at Fat Dawg's and go play after hours at Stubb's. I remember them blowing the roof off that place with Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue.
