Hi, I'm Angela! I help law students get the 1L grades to start a lawyering career on their own terms...aaand I help new lawyers become a "go to" rockstar associate in their law firm (and still feel like a human at the end of the day).

Are these people REALLY that out-of-touch with reality? I was a kid when these commercials aired, and I, my family, and all of my friends understood RIGHT AWAY that the Harrier was a joke. The fact that he was *looking* for fine print, doing all this research & math, not seeing it in the catalog, having to *write it on the order form*... They KNEW that their whole plan was to try to hold the company to an absurdly literal interpretation of their commercial, and that the "offer" was not genuine. I don't like huge corporations either, but this whole thing is beyond absurd, and if any of these people genuinely believed that they were gonna get that jet, have I got a bridge to sell to them!! I'm dumbfounded that so many people are taking his side.

I just looked it up, and $700,000 is a little more than the cost to buy a small aircraft. A brand new Cessna 172 light airplane would cost you between $300,000 and $400,000. Maybe it's not as cool as a harrier jet, but it is still an aircraft.

Thank you for these videos, Angela! Any advice on answering the "Why do you want to pursue a legal career" question for a Law Cohort or Fellowship?
@AngelaVorpahl
@AngelaVorpahl 6 дней назад
Hi Jordan! I would take the same approach -- what's one notable experience (e.g. a course you took in college, a conversation you had with an attorney, an internship/job/volunteer experience) that was the tipping point for helping you decide that you might want to go to law school? From there, if you've taken any steps to deepen that hunch (e.g. taken additional courses, reached out to other attorneys, tried to confirm/negate the feeling by taking on other internships/jobs/volunteer experience), you should absolutely add that part of the narrative as well!

I disagree on billing for doing things that just get you up to speed on a case. Those aren’t instances where you’re actually doing work for a client. Having said that, there are certainly ways to turn that into billable time. For instance, I’ve billed prep time for depositions, mediations, or hearings where I reviewed docs to get caught up.

Is is ethical the use of ai to interprete, write and read cases? Thanks.
@AngelaVorpahl
@AngelaVorpahl 11 дней назад
If you're a law student and the case brief is not for a grade and/or your professor hasn't explicitly prohibited the use of AI, I'd say heck yes! It can absolutely help you understand the content and main takeaways of a case before you read it.

In addition, one thing that is helpful for billable entries when starting is to see a good swath of examples of others’. Usually at an orientation, they give you one or two. But that is not enough. So ask the partner supervising one of your matters to let you see last months entries for the matter you’re working on (hopefully with a sizable team so you can discern patterns that are not just idiosyncrasies). These help you in general, but also help you for particular clients. Beyond clients wanting billing down in a certain way (e.g., block billing), you learn how to frame your entries for billable work in a way that is more likely not to raise the client’s eyebrow when they receive the bill or an interim accrual. Good (or even bad) partners are happy to do so because it saves them time editing them over the end of the month. It’s one definite skill juniors can get better at quickly before getting hit with a ton of tasks.

I got my Masters in HR Development but don't feel I'm really empowered by my employer to make meaningful legal decisions or provide substantive advice and counsel in the same way that our legal team is. The thing is he should have taken the settlement money, first a civilian can't legally own a fighter jet, second even there was a loophole allowing to own the jet, he had to be a fighter pilot to actually claim the plane... Even if you won a car you can't claim it without a driver's license and a fighter jet is a total different ballgame.., So he wasn't a trained fighter pilot so he couldn't fly it... Even if he knew how to fly it it still would have been illegal to fly it because it's a fighter jet. He couldn't sell it by any legal means so he would have been stuck with it... It was all about greed because the jet was worth 32 millions and his greed ultimately got the better of him...

Hi Angela. Here's a question about the curve: if I wanted a job in the tax department of a law firm, and I actually got an A in Federal Income Tax, would it really matter that I got a C in Civil Procedure, for example? Or would it really make a difference per se that I might have been hurt slightly more by the curve and helped by it? Secondly, the irony is this, LL.M. classes don't have a curve. Why is that?

I just started as an assistant associate in corporate law. A lot of time is spent reading and responding to e-mails, legal research for partners, making templates for other associates etc. I also do a bit of due diligence (only when a deal is going), and then i add my findings to a due diligence rapport that the partners send out to the clients. The conference calls is spot on some days you can have meetings for 2-3 hours where you mainly just listen and write notes.

Thank you Angela. I have an MBA and I have a background in Investment Banking, so Transactional Law is what I am very interested in. But I have also been a victim of a very strange and very bizarre legal situation which occurred in China back in 2006 which has absolutely no true legal basis. So that is a situation which I am looking to sue the hell out these people involved ! You have given me 2 places to start. Thanks!

"Copy Paste jobs, where we change up the facts of the previous Complaint/Answer/Motion with whatever is due for the current client who owes money," is a succinct reply to most people who respond. Otherwise, "paid to argue/talk in court" is my go to response whenever the barrista next to the courthouse decides to ask.... ....or "I don't have a real job..." is another one I give. -259070 CA

At most US law schools, grades matter, and they matter a lot--to 10 percent of the class. If you are in the top ten percent of class, and preferably also make Law Review, you will be interviewed for, and a have a good chance of getting 1) High-paying jobs in large, prestigious law firms and 2) Federal Clerkships leading to the same, see supra. Well, top 10 percent for most law firms, top 5 percent of the class for very grade-conscious law firms, like Cravath. All of that said, grades are literally irrelevant for 9/10 students in most law schools. There are no prizes for second place. Yes, your law school professors, Deans, perhaps the Career Services Office will tell you "Well, if you DIDN'T make top 10 percent/Law Review, but you DID make top 1/3 & Space Law Journal, that's pretty much the same thing!. . ..they tell you that so you won't drop out and they can suck you dry for another 2Y of student loans. If you are gullible enough to fall for their lies, guess what-- you aren't smart enough to be a good lawyer.
