Since I learned that Michael Crawford is the Frank Spenser of S am mothers do ave ' em I can't help laughing when I.s😅ee him as the tragic phantom For this reason I close my eyes and listen hi😮s powerful sensual voice & i forget who is who that said, I'm more taken by Gerald:to me he is the only phantom with his suffering and his pain. 8:54
Seriously? Michael Crawford DEFINED the Phantom with body and soul and all this you can hear in his voice, all the colors and nuances he put into this, showed the spectrum of all the personality parts of the character of Erik. Still remains unparalleld. (I can't help myself: the Version of Butler reminds me of this scurrile Pre-Record they did with Brightman and Steve Harley)
Gary Maur takes the win on this one. Michael is the reigning king of it all, but Gary...he's something else. The unsung hero who provided one if the most compelling performances ever. To make it even better, his Christine was his wife and their closing performance was heartbreaking.
I ENJOYED BOTH MICHAEL AND GERARD, PRETTY CLOSE TO BEING THE BEST. HOWEVER I THINK MICHAEL HAS A BIT MORE CHARISMATIC, CHARM. WHEN HE PERFORMS. LOVED WATCHING BOTH.
I'm sure other Phantom fans like myself feel this way after those greedy, selfish, uncaring Broadway hypocrites are heartlessly closing Phantom down unless we do something to stop them & foil them to keep Phantom on Broadway till literally the end of time
Anyone who is reading the last message, ignore it. I'm just a Phantom fan dealing with that life changing news in a negative way & what I previously said isn't really true
They're all amazing, tbh (IMO). I can't pick a favourite. I will admit that I've never listened to Phantom all the way through, but have heard bits and pieces. I didn't even know there were so many versions. From this video, though, it's impossible for me to pick a favourite as all the versions here sound amazing. I don't have the emotional attachment to any particular version or 'so and so was my first, and they're still my favourite'. I have that with Jesus Christ Superstar (somewhat, my first exposure to it was the 2012 arena tour DVD which I still have and still love, but my favourite version is actually the second one I heard, the 96 cast recording with Steve Balsamo and Zubin Varla), but I'm pretty much completely unbiased with Phantom. Very much impartial.
Gerard Butler is a great actor, but he cant sing. Full stop, end of story. He was a terrible choice for this role, because he sings like a truck smashing into a wall. Michael Crawford is an incredible, passionate singer, and he should have had the role in the movie. He wanted to do it and he was ready to do it. But a few people in power got greedy and thought they'd get another actor, and completely ruined the movie. So sad. (PS: Emmy Rossum cant sing either, but she doesnt make me want to claw at my ears like he does.)
I disagree, Butler was a great choice for the movie. Although Crawford is a good singer, he was not suitable for the film and was just a theater actor.
I love crawford and gerard personally. Both different sides of the phantom. Crawford is more angelic and gerard is more of a pained version of the phantom. Both amazing to me.
Michael will always be the king of the Phantom's, but I've fallen in love with Gerard Butler for the film version and Ben Lewis in Love Never Dies. I'm so guttered that Ben has retired (at least for now, but totally understand and support his decision) while his wife recovers from the Covid-19 jab. Many moons ago I saw the Phantom when it came to Auckland NZ and Rob Guest portrayed the Phantom. ❤🙂
I'm sorry but I HATE Michael's voice!! So whinny! Like nails on a chalkboard. When I think of POTO I think of mysterious and smooth to point of hypnosis and there's no way Michael's voice would come close to doing that. Very Broadway, less realistic, less romantic, less mysterious, less hypnotic..and overall much less enjoyable and easy on the ears than Gerard. It's not even close for me.. Gerard's a much better and more fitting voice hands down!
Michael Crawford was my very first celebrity crush purely based on his beautiful singing voice alone. The Phantom is supposed to be able to seduce with his voice. So.......definitely going to say Crawford.
