Krupa's "solo" playing in the last 30 seconds, starting at about 11:40, is the most amazing drumming I've ever heard, playing that overwhelming powerful drum roll and somehow throwing in cymbal hits (maybe hi hat?) here and there at the same time.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if someone decided to recreate this performance note for note today? I’d pay to go see it, pay for the CD and DVD as well. What a feat it would be to coordinate, practice and do all of this recreation in one take… And to hear it in stereo using today’s technology. I also wish there was video footage of this original performance.
My mother attended the 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert. She always thought Gene Krupa was the best drummer ever. Whenever I hear this video, I know my mom is part of the applause.
The opening number to “Dancin’” Act 3 ….. I heard it every night for the full run of the show at the Broadhurst Theatre. Sam Soltan IATSE 306 motion picture projectionist…
In watching the City go by...I can understand why so many people are STILL upset about old Pennsylvania Station being torn down. New York lost a bit of its heart, then.
I love how at the 3:30 mark the crowd is clapping like it’s over…then Gene keeps drumming like “Y’all don’t even know…this song ain’t even half way over yet!!!” 😂
When I was a boy during WW II an uncle left a recording of Sing Sing Sing with us for safekeeping. My aunt claimed that he had stolen it from a record store he had worked in, but I tossed morality aside and wore the platters out, especially Stacy's solo. After all these years I can still recall almost every note.
Sad to think everyone in this film is dead. How fragile life is. I wonder how their lives where, that there are children and grandchildren of theirs walking around. If you are born in New York, one of these people could have been your relative. Wow.
The greatest "drum song" ever, and this is the best version of it. This is the one I remember, and what I play at home on my stereo. If I had a time machine...if I only had one...
The entire 1938 concert can only be Heard, (not watched) in its entirety. Here on youtube even. The "other crap" is a film called New York: The Wonder City" (1938). Do you understand the connection? Stop whining.
@@lizlee6290 No, I don't understand the connection at all. And if you don't like my whining, too bad. I'm a big fan of Big Band music, but I enjoyed watching videos of the bands playing and/or singing their music.
@@jefscolnago Yes, there are visual recordings, if you've ever seen the movie "The Benny Goodman Story". It's just like seeing the real Benny Goodman performing this song.
In the 50's we would bus from St. Ives to Penzance often. My 'party piece' was to hum the whole of this version of SSS, solos and all, all the way. I'd memorised it from the FIRST LP I ever bought!
Offbeat loop... bummer.. the magic of this is all in the tape, mics, preamps, and mastering. A beat so simple a child could play it. The magic/mojo is in the RECORDING.
