I love this piece. A shame there were a couple of sync lags between Martha and Orchestra. Nonetheless......beautiful. (this is one of my favourites though, even though not live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DA5Db8TsfoY.htmlsi=V95EBEh65K1195OZ )

One of the most beautiful, poignant pieces I've ever heard. I first heard this upon recommendation of a piano student in my dorm at Kent State In 1970. I will always associate this beautiful piece with the shootings there

Il n'y avait rien d'autre à faire!

When Ravel's orchestral dissonance really kicks in (in the second half or so... from @4 minutes on...), and she keeps on playing the waltz over four....and the dissonance grows... and she takes us up above the fray into the clouds... with those "late-Beethoven-esque" trills.... I go from pain to transcendence. It's a miraculous feat of creation - beauty.

Sometimes there is nothing you can say about a piece life this . Close your eye , your heart grows , your emotions scream and then you breath… the second movement of Ravel, if I may compare, has only equal to Mozart’s liano concertos.. i only want to compare the genius and beauty .😅

I've commented elsewhere on my belief that Barenboim is a worthy interpreter of Beethoven, but doesn't begin to understand Schubert. He admitted (I can't recall where I came across that report) that he had neglected that composer (check his discography). I suspect he was quite contemptuous of Schubert as a serious keyboard composer, and considered his music beneath the dignity of such a great pianist as himself.. When I heard the opening bars, my initial reaction wass that this was the best I had ever heard Barenboim playing Schubert. That impression did not survive the middle section (even ignoring the mistake). As for that dreadful mistake, I don't think age can be blamed (I heard Rubinstein when he was 84 play Schubert's longest sonata brilliantly ). This was not a two hour recital, but a 7 minute performance of a single work. He would have had ample time to learn and practise the work for what was an important state occasion and, if he had any doubts, he could have had a score in front of him. This is all consistent with the contempt which I suspect he holds. Schubert is about heart and emotions and sensitivity (and yin if you believe in that concept). There are a number of pianists who bring out these features. The best among them could be the late Radu Lupu.
