A community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about the field of health informatics, I hope this can be a place to share articles, blog posts, advice and job opportunities focused in the field of health informatics, biomedical engineering, biostatistics, data analytics, and data visualization in healthcare
I love that you showed an example of stuff you'd actually work with for your Day in the Life section. It's so hard to find people actually showing what they do. I don't think the analytics side is for me but I'm glad I can finally know. Now to find a video of the other side of Health Informatics lol
Thank you for watching, if you are looking for the clinical side of health informatics (e.g., working on improving clinical workflow, EHR integration etc...) you might interested in the role of the Application Analyst. AHIMA has a list of job titles within different areas of the health informatics field: my.ahima.org/careermap good luck!
Thank you so much for creating this podcast! I am a data engineer looking to pivot into healthcare data science and policy, so I find your topics to be very interesting and insightful 👍🏽
Have you looked at roles with titles: Clinical Analyst, Clinical Decision Support or Healthcare Data Analyst, these roles are more technical focused and might not require a RN
Thank you for your dedication in sharing so much insights in this field! Very encouraging podcast. I am just starting on actively venturing into this field, what roles would you suggest that doesn't heavily involve on presentation. Or rather a role within HI suited for introverts. Thanks!
Hello, I am also introverted 🙂a role as a healthcare data analyst might be a good fit because there is a good portion of solo analysis work to be done, although most roles will require some presentation of your work to internal/external stakeholders. You can check out my video on some of the skills needed for the healthcare data analyst role here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-HJdeU-gFE.html
Hello, I have been working as a service desk analyst at a hospital for the past 10 years and over the years I have had exposure to all the EMR systems such as Epic and all other clinical applications. I've just recently come across this field because I wanted to advance into something different but still connected with Information technology...Do you think this would be a good field to get into since I am already working in a hospital setting and I have found an online masters in healthcare informatics program that I'm going to inquire about. Would that open up more opportunities for me?
Hello, since you have prior experience working with EHR systems this would be a good field to pivot into, you can look for job roles such as an EHR Analyst or Application Analyst, you can see more job titles here through the AHIMA website: my.ahima.org/careermap
Can I break into this field with only a Bachelors of Science in kinesiology and health science? I have clinical experience in a nursing home and with SAS in undergrad
I would say yes, some job postings only highlight the need for a "health-related degree" and I work with people from various different backgrounds, what will really set you apart from other applicants is your prior experience.
Do you offer resume services? I have a bachelor in Public Health, getting a masters in health informatics, yet something is off! I also currently work as a health information specialist.
Elena, this is fantastic no "blah blah" fluff. I will be buying your ebook and coming back again to these videos and podcasts. I have just begun researching this field of healthcare informatics after a life in law practice and home healthcare. You really do break it down to a practical components.
Hello can you please do an updated video on potential health informatics interview questions with a specific answer example to each question? Thank you.

Yes you can, some common technical tools used in the analytical side of health informatics include: -Knowledge of SQL programming language to query relational databases. -Experience with visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.… -Experience working with large clinical datasets including manipulating, maintaining, preparing data, and presenting analyses and reports for different audiences. -Ability to work both independently and in teams
I currently work in mental health as a biller and claims coordinator. I think this the best degree since i do have to create report to the program director, ceo and finance. Reports on issues with different projects I handel . My weakness is creating excel reports If you have any advise please let me know ❤.
You could start out working in a role in the IT department, with a CS degree, at a hospital such as a Help Desk Analyst and transition into a health informatics role
Hi I’m working in healthcare industry and I have done my bachelors in computer science(India). I would like to pursue Health Informatics in USA. Is it possible??
Hello, I am based in Canada so I am not able to answer from a US perspective. However, some general skills for health informatics role include: -Knowledge of SQL programming language to query relational databases. -Experience with visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.… -Experience working with large clinical datasets including manipulating, maintaining, preparing data, and presenting analyses and reports for different audiences. -Ability to work both independently and in teams
hlthanalyticinsights.gumroad.com/l/becomeahealthcareanalyst When I was transitioning into the healthcare data analytics field and developing my technical skills, one area that I found missing was a lack of online courses highlighting a clinical problem (e.g., determining re-admission rates back to hospitals). There are several analytical courses out there but I couldn't find anything that could help me to gain experience working with a clinical dataset so that I could practice my technical skills and build a portfolio project that would be relevant for hiring managers in the healthcare data analytics field. I ended up creating this course found here: hlthanalyticinsights.gumroad.com/l/becomeahealthcareanalyst
Hello, I'm a 44 year old US Veteran living in Vegas. I currently have a Computer Science degree (obtained back in 2018). I have no Health IT experience or education of any fashion. I'm looking to get into Health Informatics.
One option might be to get experience in an IT help desk role at a hospital to get relevant clinical experience and transition into a health informatics role or obtain a degree in health informatics. Some roles in the health informatics field include: business intelligence analyst, systems analyst, reporting analyst and/or clinical analyst might be a good fit if you are interested in this area. You can check out this career map from AHIMA for other relevant roles: my.ahima.org/careermap
Recently i have completed My Bachelor Of science in Nursing in Nov,2023 and now i want to Persue MS in health informatics in Fall intake 2024. Except clinical experience, i don't have any technical experience. So is it true that i can't get job if i don't have any experience in technical side. I am so confused. Please guide me.
There are non-technical roles in the health informatics field which focus on improving the clinical workflow in hospitals. Some roles include an EHR analyst or Application Analyst. You can also look more specifically into Nursing Informatics that might be more focused on training nursing staff to be super users on EHR systems such as Epic and Cerner the Nursing Informatics Facebook Group has a wealth of information on the field: facebook.com/groups/1205716746271147/
Hello Lena, Thank you for this podcast; I really enjoyed it. I would like to know the most useful and practical SQL commands based on your experience. I prefer not to be referred to other websites like W3Schools and the like, as I am looking for experience-based recommendations. Would you please help me?
Hello, You might want to look at research assistant or help desk roles at a healthcare organization or hospital to get an understanding of clinical terminology. In addition, some roles in the health informatics field include: business intelligence analyst, systems analyst, reporting analyst and/or clinical analyst might be a good fit if you are interested in this area. If you are looking for comparable job descriptions, one tip I have is to search on LinkedIn Jobs or Indeed: "SQL" + "Healthcare" or "Power BI" + "Healthcare" to get a sense of the job roles and see if this is of interest to you. If you look at this career map from AHIMA: ahima.org/career-map, the Informatics and Data Analytics sections would be relevant to you. Some common technical tools used in the analytical side of health informatics include: Knowledge of SQL programming language to query relational databases. Experience with visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.… Experience working with large clinical datasets Ability to work both independently and in teams
Thanks for listening to the final episode of the Health Analytic Insights podcast, if you would like to continue getting tips on how to break into the field you can sign up to the newsletter here: healthanalyticinsights.substack.com/
Hello, no you don't need hands-on clinical experience for a role in Health Informatics but an understanding of clinical terminology can be helpful, for example, if you took a course in Anatomy. However, for the sub-specialties in health informatics such as Nursing Informatics or Pharmacy Informatics, a degree and clinical experience is often listed in job descriptions
I have more questions please 🥺🥺🥺 1. Can health informatician do health data or information mining or do they just work with the data or information available
yes health informaticians can do information mining to uncover patterns or trends in the data and display this on a dashboard or report for clinicians to view and make actionable decisions
Yes health informaticians can work in the area of data governance to protect personal health information or they can work in the cybersecurity field at a healthcare organization to mitigate data breaches: www.himss.org/resources/cybersecurity-healthcare
