Boy’s!! Nice fish!! But I hate watching people hold those big lake trout up vertical. If your keeping it no worries. But if your planning on releasing it, that’s a dead fish as soon as you hang it up like that. Some fish you handled well, but others you killed. Come on up to Canada and enjoy yourselves, but please handle our fish with care.

We fished all over the lake. I’m not sure where the “Caves” area is but there aren’t many places that I haven’t been. Specs are all along the shorelines. Big Pike are in the river mouths and warm bays. Lakers are trolling in the midlake for the most part.

Do you target walleye mostly on the northern part of the lake?
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 2 года назад
yes.... the whole north end is actually quite shallow. Im not much of a walleye fisherman but the north end of Ombabaka bay is crazy good for walleyes if you want to run that far. Its a long ways up there. There are usually wallys in all of the creek mouths. Ive caught some huge ones while fishing great big stuff for pike...
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 3 года назад
Hey Alex…. Thanks for the comment. Absolutely!! It’s a little early for the best Laker fishing but you should be able to find some. Fish the middle of the lake…. Mostly in front of and around Kings Head. You can see it from the campground. It’s about 17 miles off shore. There is all kinds of structure out there. We fish the biggest spoons that I can find. Big Canoe spoons, Williams Whitefish and big Provisors are all good. Spoons 8” - 12” long!!!! Concentrate in the upper 70ft of the water column. That is where the most active fish will be. I usually troll from 1.6 to 2.1 mph. It’s definetly not a big numbers game but it’s very common to catch fish over 20lbs and sometimes way bigger than that!! Please remember that these huge fish are all very old and special before you crack them on the head…. :) There are 3 more years of the Nipigon Chronicles on my channel that all have big Lakers on them. Don’t forget the pike…… they will be on the spawn while you’re there…..

Hi, hopefully myself and a friend will going to lake nipigon first time end of May whenever ice out is. Looking for speckles first and then pike. We have truck and camper towing 19' boat. looks like you launched at high hills harbour. is the a spot to camp there too. Any helpful tips you can give two old guys will be apprciated.
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 3 года назад
Hey Bryon, sorry just saw this comment. Yes High Hill is basically the only access on the east side other than way down in South Bay. There is a great campground right on the lake. They have water, power and showers. There is fuel at the launch although I have had trouble with water in the fuel from there. You can also get fuel in Beardmore at the little grocery store. They were not open on weekends when I was there last so getting fuel always takes some planning. Depending on how far offshore you want to travel, we would go 75 to 150 miles a day so I always burn a ton of fuel. The end of May is always the greatest time to be there fishing for specs. The ice usually goes out somewhere around the 20th of May +/- a few days. My favorite weekend of the year is always Memorial day assuming the ice has been out for 7-10 days. It can be magic with the right water temps and a bit of wind. Windy days are incredible if you have a boat that can handle it. The pike fishing doesn't really get good until the middle of June. You need the creeks and swamps to warm uo enough to trigger the spawn then its nuts. The last two weeks of June are best for pike. Nipigon is without a doubt the greatest drive-to pike fishing that I've ever come across. We usually started trolling for lakers during the end of June and it is good through July. nHope this helps... Hopefully the border reopens...

Hey Hilary, how productive do you find the dipsy divers vs The down riggers on Nipigon? Would you run one dipsy and one rigger if it was just yourself plus one? Have you had much luck running flashers ahead of your spoons? Any advice would be appreciated! Love the vids! My wife and I can’t get enough of Nipigon, amazing area/fishing!
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 5 лет назад
Hey Zach, I normally run both Dipseys and Downriggers. I run the down riggers right out the back and spin the Dipseys to go way out the sides. Normally the downriggers will be from 40-70ft down and the Dipseys are pretty close to the top. Yes we run flashers pretty often. I actually run the biggest Spin-n-glos that I can find behind the flashers and some days they are magic. Run a Howie fly right off the hook, then 5-6 10mm beads and then the big Spin-n-glo on the front. The whole setup is 8-10" long.... rig it with a 24" leader behind the flasher. Fish these pretty slow (1.6mph) The go to set up is Huge spoons. Williams Whitefish, Canoe spoons and big Provisor spoons are all really good. Just fish the biggest ones you can find. Marine General in Duluth always has a bunch of the big ones. Nipigon is an amazing place.... The fishing up there is quite seasonal, big specks early right after ice out, then big pike thru late June and then the lakers start to get good. Just do me a favor and practice catch and release. Those big fish are truly rare and old and beautiful!!!

Thanks for sharing, headed up to nipigon June 14-24 for the first time from Indiana, any tips on lake trout trolling that time of year, thanks.
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 5 лет назад
Hey Luke, definetly..... That is a little bit early for the best lake trout trolling but you should be able to find some. A good day trolling might only be 3-4 fish but you may have a giant in there. We just troll huge , big spoons for the most part off down riggers. Canoe spoons, Williams Whitefish spoons and big Provisor spoons are favs. Anywhere in the middle part of the lake. That week is prime time for big pike.... just saying!!
@lukedavis5706
@lukedavis5706 5 лет назад
Hilary Bates yeah you guys caught some giant pike that week, will definitely have to target them, is there any particular foot of water you would target for the lake trout that time of year, thanks
@hilarybates
@hilarybates 5 лет назад
Yes... I wouldn't worry much below 70ft. As you know the most active fish always seem to be highest in the water volume. I usually run down riggers from 40 to 70ft and a couple Dipseys off the sides. There are some other huge lakers on the 2016 and 2017 videos as well....@@lukedavis5706
