The "Rahi Building Challenge" which this model originated as an entry for started in March 2004, essentially right after the release of the Toa Metru (8601-8606) in North America. Which signifies that the Artahka Bull's creator was an early adopter of that wave-or at least Onewa (8604), due to the presence of the Toa Metru feet in "light flesh" on the model's back legs, and of the torso and pelvis parts and the shoulder armor in that color on the bull's upper torso. Even today, the exact classification of this color remains somewhat disputed, as it goes by several different names between color and part guides. With some labeling it as "light brown", "caramel brown", or simply "brown". Even if that is even more divisive in how the earlier (produced 1974-2006) shade of brown (sometimes called "Mata brown" in the context of Bionicle) is referred to that way by "Rebrickable" for example. But what is often forgotten is how the shade of brown found on Onewa's Toa Metru form (8604) originated in 1998 within education kits, though the only piece in that color for five years was the "classic" female minifigure hair piece. This color did not appear in standard retail sets until the start of 2004, and was borderline exclusive to the Bionicle theme during the following two years. Conversely, this color was almost absent from System style sets, except for the aforementioned hair piece and a minifigure head which appeared in a Spider Man 2 set (4854) in April 2004, and in a Batman set (7785) in Summer 2006, the former of which I had. It is also confirmed that the model's creator had Rahkshi Panrahk (8587), as evidenced by the end parts of its "Staff of Fragmentation" and the feet and capsule lid in the metallicized shade known as "Pearl brown", and the hand sockets in the non-metallicized shade of "Mata brown" (also called "Old brown" to distinguish from later shades). The model's creator also had Turahk (8592), as the spine fin from that set is also present here. The model's arms are partly comprised of the Toa Mata style of limbs (also called "Voodoo legs") in the old dark gray, which confirms that the creator had either the Mata form of Onua (8532) or possibly Pewku (in 8595). But no other characteristic elements of either set are present in this model, so it is unknown as to which one the creator had, or if they had both. Moving to the model's head, the Toa Mata/Nuva foot (Voodoo foot) in Mata brown and the silver "Feet addition" comprising the bull's snout confirm that its creator had the Nuva form of Pohatu (8568). But more curious is the presence of the "Voodoo Hooks" in the old dark gray comprising the bull's horns. As no other characteristic elements of the Boxor (8556) or the Exo-Toa (8557) are present in this model, the creator could have also possibly gotten this part in the old dark gray from the "Power Crusher" set (8468) from the Drome Racers theme from 2002, or from the "Extreme Power Bike" (8371) from the same theme released in early 2003. If the creator didn't have Lehvak (8564), Lehvak Va (8552) or Lehvak-Kal (8576), the creator could have also gotten Bohrok eyes in transparent red from this set (8371), as well as eight other sets from the Drome Racers theme, or the first Star Wars "Hailfire Droid" (4481) released during 2002-03. Of note, 2004 was also when the transparent red Bohrok eyes would make their first appearance in a minifigure-scale set as part of the serpent head in the "Citadel of Orlan" (8780) from the "Knights' Kingdom II" theme (2004-06). Though it is disputed as to if the first wave of that theme's minifigure-scale sets was released in European (and possibly Oceanian) markets before they were released in North America as the theme's constraction-scale sets were. Being that I've never seen the inside of the printed catalogs from Spring or Summer 2004, and there are very few archived webpages of Lego's online store from that period.

Rounding out the Barraki-as well as serving as the team's leader, Pridak commands an army of sharks, as evidenced by his three "Shark Tooth Blades" in a melding of white and Mata red. Even though this could be interpreted in a different manner in itself. This part would appear recolored in silver later in the year in two larger sets as well. For unknown reasons, some promotional artwork of Pridak depicts him with transparent red eyes, instead of the transparent blue ones his set actually comes with. But despite his status as the leader of the Barraki, set-wise it is difficult for me to determine what date I obtained Pridak as my fourth member of the team. Except for how it was after May 2007 when I obtained Takadox (8916), but before obtaining Mantax (8919) and Carapar (8918) during the beginning of that Summer. It is equally difficult to remember if I obtained this set, or them before or after obtaining my first member of the Toa Mahri (8910-8915) for my 10th birthday in July of 2007. In addition, Pridak is comprised out of the fewest pieces (47) out of all of the Barraki, which is still higher than the part counts of the "standard" Piraka (8900-8905) and the Inika forms of Jaller (8727), Hahli (8728), Kongu (8931) and Matoro (8932) from the year before, but just one part fewer than the Toa Hordika (8736-8741) and Visorak (8742-8747) from 2005. Even at the time of the Barraki's release, no set of a standalone canister-size character had had fewer than 40 pieces since the Toa Nuva forms of Lewa (8567) and Tahu (8572) from back in 2002. Pridak having the fewest parts of the Barraki could be owed in part to him not having as many pins or spikes as the others, or even to not having a Piraka or Inika style of torso, even as Takadox (8916), and Ehlek (8920) also didn't have such. Despite both of those sets having more parts overall. Pridak features a new style of feet, the Toa Metru style of double socket joints, and "Electro Blades" recolored in white, with the first two of these being exclusive to this set. In addition to being the smallest set to have Rahkshi legs in black, Pridak's arms mark the third and final appearance of the style of limbs introduced with Toa Nuva in white, as they also appeared in a "Parts tub" (6620) from May 2006 between their origin in Takanuva (8596) and here. As such, this set also marks the last appearance of the Toa Nuva limbs all together. While I didn't mention this in the previous five entries, each of the Barraki store their Sea Squid mounted on their back, shoulder or one hand via "stick holders" part in black. This part first appeared in April 2004 in dark stone gray as part of Doc Ock in several sets (4854, 4855, 4856 and 4857)from the Spider Man 2 theme. This part first appeared in Bionicle in transparent fluorescent reddish-orange as part of the eyes of Roodaka (8761), and later debuted in black in a Harry Potter set (4766) in Fall 2005 in the runup to the release of the film of "Goblet of Fire" on November 18 of that year. They also came in dark stone gray in the four minifigure-scale Bionicle sets (8624, 8892, 8893 and 8894) in 2006. They would continue to appear in both of these colors in Bionicle during 2007, but not after that year. This would also happen for the Barraki pincers being recolored in white for one set of that category (8927) but nowhere else after.

Moc advice: If you would like to make possable Krika legs, you can switch out the red 6538c pieces between the two front legs with two red 30552 and 30553 hinge pieces. This does not only make the front legs a bit taller, but they make them able to bend like real limbs; perfect for stopmotion and possing

In the story, Ehlek commands an army of electric eels, even though there are some inconsistencies in his design in relation to that motif. Set wise, Ehlek was the second Barraki that I obtained, receiving him as a gift from my grandmother. But while I'm not sure what the occasion was, it is believed that I obtained him at some point between Sunday February 25, 2007 and Thursday March 15 of that year, given how I got Ehlek after Kalmah (8917), but before obtaining Takadox (8916) in May of that year. Having the third-highest number of parts (54) out of the Barraki, Ehlek features a head and "Electric Spikes" (in the story) in a melded shade of green which is somewhat ambiguous, despite not being bioluminescent. The spikes would also appear in two other colors, though only one continued to be used beyond 2007. The head also appears in a far rarer set from the same year as the hands of a certain character. Ehlek features two sets of "Tri-Talons" which would also be used in three other sets after this. At the time of release, Ehlek was the first set of a (technically) humanoid character in nearly five years to have lime green in any capacity, being that the color's previous appearance in Bionicle on Visorak Keelerak (8746) was part of a creature. Interestingly, I personally don't remember ever having any problems with lime socket joints at the time, even though the reason for their fragility can be chalked up to a cooling error in the factory, which caused them to cool much faster than the same parts in other colors did. As such, this is the first and only set to have the Toa Metru double socket joints in this color. This is also the first and only Bionicle set to have a Technic 4x4 angular beam in lime green, which had first appeared in one of the final sets (8307) from the "Competition" (originally known as "Cyberslam") subtheme of Technic in September 2000. This part had first appeared in other colors such as black, tan, Mata green and the old dark gray between the "Speed Slammers" and Technic Star Wars subthemes at the beginning of that year, and later appeared in some of the Rahi (8538, 8539, 8548 and 8549) in 2001, and this part is still in use today. Ehlek was also my only time getting the Vahki legs and Vahki hip piece in Metru green (earth green), as I didn't have Vorzakh (8616), Keelerak (8746) or Umbra (8625), and was also the second and final set to have the Webbed Piraka feet in that color. This left the Toa Metru lower legs in this color remaining, if only for one more set later on.

In the story, Mantax commands an army of Sting Rays, as evidenced by having a slightly elongated head and torso and being the only member of the Barraki to have a tail. Set wise, Mantax was my fifth Barraki overall, though it is difficult to determine when I obtained him, being that I obtained Mantax before obtaining Carapar (8918), and relatively close to obtaining another of the Barraki in June of 2007. Though it is believed I had obtained all six of the Barraki before obtaining my first of the Toa Mahri (8910-8915) for my tenth birthday in mid-July of that year. At the time of release, Mantax set a new record for the most parts in a set of an Earth-associated character or species (58), though this record was only in place for around six months. As such, Mantax has the second highest number of parts out of the Barraki-only edged out by Takadox (8916), even though that was partly because of that set having more spikes attached by Technic "half pins". Mantax features a new style of feet in black, which would also appear in three other colors in one set each over the remainder of the theme, even as one of them was much more rare than the others. He also features a different style of Pincers on his hand, even though they aren't articulated, and his head also appears in a minifigure-scale set (8926). I also obtained an extra copy of his head alongside a copy of the seventh novel of the "Bionicle Legends" series; "Prisoners of the Pit" during that year. On his shoulders, he also features the same style of armor found on the chest of Carapar (8918) in a melded black and dark stone gray color scheme, which would also appear in a far more rare set later in 2007. In conjunction, Mantax marks the third and final appearance of the Piraka knee armor in black, leaving Metru red as the only remaining origin color of this part. Even though it would also appear in other colors going forward. Mantax is the only Barraki to be asymmetrical, and the first canister-size set to have a Rahkshi limb/leg in black-which had been exclusive to Titan sets over the prior three years. Though Mantax was the only Bionicle set to have the curved beam introduced with the Rahkshi (8587-8592) in black, this part in that color had first appeared in that color in two sets from the short-lived "Vikings" theme in 2005 (7019) and '06 (7021), in spite of their limited release in North American markets. Thus making Mantax the final set to have this part all together, after four years in use, and the middle section of Mantax's tail in black also debuted in the latter of these (7021) before appearing here. A similar story is true for the tail-like elements on Mantax's arms which first appeared on the mini versions of the Piraka featured in the minifigure-scale Bionicle sets (8892-8894 and 8624) from the year before. I obtained such in various colors between two of them (8892 and 8893), and also in Metru blue in particular from an "Aqua Raiders" set (7772) from 2007. During that year, they also debuted in a shade known as "Phosphorescent green"-which had previously been exclusive to "Racers" sets since the color's introduction in 2005. This piece continues to be used today eighteen years later, having most recently appeared in Mata green in an "Ideas" project-based set (21351) based on "The Nightmare Before Christmas" released last month.

Carapar is somewhat of an anomaly in Bionicle, in how there is a fair amount of inconsistency in his character. His name is derived from the word "Carapace", in spite of how on certain promotional artwork-and his instruction manual, his name is misspelled as "Karapar" for unknown reasons. Set wise, Carapar is the only Barraki whose canister lid isn't the same color as himself, in contrast to how all the others have this and the label on the back of the canister corresponding to such. Instead, his lid is colored in Keet orange (flame yellow) which is more of an "accent color" in this case. His main color is a seaweed-like marbled shade that is entirely exclusive to him, which has retroactively been viewed by some (notably TTV in May 2015) as an odd choice for a supposedly Stone-associated character in itself. At that time, when describing much of this set's color scheme, the narrator stated: "If you don't like gray, you're not going to like '08", in regards to the theme as a whole. This is somewhat reflected in how Carapar was the sixth and final Barraki which I obtained, even though I don't remember what date I obtained him. Considering that I obtained him and two of the other Barraki fairly close together somewhere between June and August of 2007, but I don't think any were obtained simultaneously. Even as I'm also not sure if I completed my set of Barraki before obtaining any of the Toa Mahri (8910-8915). But that's a different story. Though all of the marbled parts are set-exclusive, Carapar's head would also appear in three other colors, though it wouldn't be used beyond 2007, as the head from Takadox (8916) was. The part used for his knee and shoulder armor was later recolored in Mata blue for one of the final sets (8190) of the "Power Miners" theme in early 2010, but nowhere else after that. Carapar marks the second and final appearance of the Toa Metru hip piece in Keet orange, and is the first and only set to have the Rahkshi feet recolored in dark stone gray. This is also the first of three sets to have the Inika lower legs in that color, as is also true for the claw parts. Carapar also became the smallest set to have Vahki legs in dark stone gray, though there is somewhat of a technicality in 2008. In addition, Carapar was the only member of the Barraki who wasn't released in minifigure form, though the exact reason remains unknown to this day...

As the member most frequently seen in the center of advertising as the wave's "Poster character", Kalmah was the first Barraki that I obtained, doing so alongside the Hydruka of Thulox (8931) from a Toys R Us location on Monday, February 19, 2007. Even though I don't remember what the occasion was, apart from its coinciding with "President's Day" in the United States. While the Barraki don't necessarily have elemental powers consistent with their respective colors, Kalmah had the second-highest part count (53) out of the red-colored canister sets (being that Kalmah doesn't directly have powers associated with Fire), behind Toa Hagah Norik (8763) from 2005, who had 55 parts. But that set only held this title for a few more months until the release of the Toa Mahri in July of '07. But that's a different story in itself. In the story, Kalmah commands an army of giant squid, as reflected in his head design and the orange tentacle parts on his left hand, and Kalmah is one of two Barraki whose head was not reused, repurposed or recolored in another set. His head also marks the first canister-size Bionicle set to use minifigure horn spikes in white, even as they actually first appeared in the theme on Vezon's spear (in 8764) the year before, as well as in a minifigure-scale set (8892) released during the same timeframe. To some, these may have been their first time getting this part, given how their official debut was in the "Vikings" theme-which wasn't as widely distributed in North America as it presumably was in European markets. In fact, that theme did not even appear in the printed catalogs from Lego Shop at Home in the United States until the start of 2006. Kalmah features a third eye because of a mutation, even as it was blinded (in the story), though this part in transparent blue only came in five sets in Bionicle. Even as it would appear in other Lego themes until 2016. In addition to the head, pincers, tentacle, Squid launcher, and armor parts, Kalmah also marks the debut of a new style of webbed foot, which also appears in Metru red in a minifigure-scale set (8926) released later in 2007. Though most of Kalmah's other parts are reused from earlier sets, he is the smallest set to have Rahkshi legs in Metru set, as every other appearance of them before and after this was in a Titan set. Though there are some slight technicalities to that in sets from 2008 and '09, which is also partly true for the Piraka torso in Metru red. This also makes Kalmah the first set since Gali Nuva (8570) and Takanuva (in 8596) from 2002-03 to have the same style of limb for his arms and legs.

At the start of 2007, the Barraki held relative significance in how they were the first wave of canister-size sets of antagonist characters which weren't "clones" of each other. In the sense each of them has a different construction, though they still share some uniform characteristics. When TTV did a review of the Toa Metru (8601-8606) in March 2014, it was explained how this was somewhat true in prior waves, even with the Toa Mata (8531-8536) back in 2001, in the way that all of them had a similar construction, but with minute differences. Hence explaining why none of them had the exact same number of parts in the way that some other waves of canister sets did. Takadox was my third Barraki overall, obtaining him around mid-late May of 2007, as we were also shopping for a birthday gift for another person for June 2 of that year. He is also the member of the Barraki which has the greatest number of parts (62) of the team, mainly because of the Mata red spikes attached on him via Technic "half pins" in Mata blue and some on the new bioluminescent armor elements. Takadox is the only Barraki who isn't directly based on a sea creature, instead having the motif of a praying mantis, conveyed by his "Twin Knives". His bioluminescent head is also one of only two of the Barraki heads to be recolored in other sets, and the only one to be used beyond 2007. In conjunction, he marks the final appearance of the Visorak feet and Piraka lower legs in Metru blue (earth blue). In addition to the pincers and the (somewhat inconsistent) "Squid Launchers", the Barraki also introduce a new style of eye, which Takadox features in transparent red. Which would go on to be the most common color of this part overall.

In addition, after this set, Metru red was the only origin color remaining of the Visorak feet. Along with the silver ones introduced with Roodaka (8761) from two years before.
