A very enjoyable series. Thanks for taking the time to share your journey and your layout. I think the class 33 has the longest and most detailed history of any loco class on Wikipedia! I've never owned one, but as I'm a GWR/BR(W) fan, I'll have to acquire one soon... Nice upgrades to your example. I have several Lima class 37s, so will try the replacement wheels, as the originals really are dirt magnets.
@PringletonModelRailway

Thanks for your kind comment Stephen. I can comfortably say that changing the old Lima wheels is the single best upgrade I did on that loco, so thoroughly recommended for your class 37s. I'm glad you enjoyed the series and hope you'll tune in again for the next installment in September. Thanks again 👍🚂

I did see a suggestion on another video, where the modeler had wired up the building with lights (looked pretty much where you'd expect to find them in a real building). He'd added some thin metal strips (painted black), one live and one return, which the LEDs were connected to (before painting). And then put some metal contacts on the bottom of two corners of the building. The baseboard then had the companion contacts. The advantage of doing it this way, the building was very easy to lift off, and where it concealed the track, gave easy access for cleaning. Yours looked a little tricky to remove the buildings in places, but it is an improvement over other wiring schemes I've seen, where the buildings are almost permanent attachments, and if the lights fail, would be difficult to maintain!
@PringletonModelRailway
@PringletonModelRailway 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your comment Neil. That sounds like an impressive technique you've seen elsewhere, and definitely one to bear in mind. The portacabins are the one on my layout that are a little difficult to remove - I think I might need to create a bigger hole for the stalk and bulb! Thank you again for stopping by and taking the time to comment 🚂👍
@NewModelRailway1
@NewModelRailway1 2 месяца назад
I haven't been a great fan of lights in buildings and carriages in the past because to see their full effect you have to reduce the daylight and then you can't see the train action too well, but what you've done has made me rethink my outlook on them completely, especially those shunting yard lamp posts. It's got me thinking now and in a good way. 😀
@PringletonModelRailway
@PringletonModelRailway 2 месяца назад
Thank you for your kind comment - I'm delighted to hear this video has given you food for thought. I think the dimmable overhead spot lights help as well, by being giving the option of creating a dusk type scene with building lights on whilst still being able to see the train action. Thank you again for stopping by 👍🚂

Don't LEDs require Direct Current? How did you get them to work with a DCC feed, is there a bridge rectifier somewhere?
@PringletonModelRailway
@PringletonModelRailway 2 месяца назад
Thank you for your comment - this is a really important point. The short answer is that there is no bridge rectifier and they are working with just the LED and resistor, directly wired to the DCC track. I did a fair bit of research online before I had a go at these, and the consensus was that the LED and resistor would be fine. Whilst the DCC alternating current makes the LED flicker, it happens at such a high frequency that the human eye doesn't see it - and that is certainly my experience. There was also some other stuff about possible reverse voltage overload problems, with the consensus being that red LEDs aren't susceptible to this. That's all been echoed by my experience. I guess there's a possibility they may fail in years to come, but so far so good ... I shall post back here with any updates on future. Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time to comment 👍🚂
@neilharbott8394
@neilharbott8394 2 месяца назад
@@PringletonModelRailway That's good to know, I'm fairly light sensitive, when it comes to flicker, so this might not be the best solution for me. I do like this idea though, and I could opt to use a normal DC bus, which I'm planning to use for other layout lighting, or wire the tracks to a bridge rectifier below board, and run the LED feed from there.
@PringletonModelRailway
@PringletonModelRailway 2 месяца назад
Yes indeed - a DC bus will also work well. That is what I have used for other lights (in buildings, yard lamps, etc.) - you can see this in episode 7. I think I just went for the buffer stops onto the DCC track for ease and so that they were always on. Incidentally, there is definitely a difference between normal AC and DCC - I previously connected one of my buffer stop lights to an AC transformer and there was a very noticeable flicker, but connected to the DCC there is none (or, at least, none that I can see!). I'm afraid other, cleverer people will need to explain that though! 😂🚂👍
