You put a lot of your own Interpretations into tolkiens words... Theoden did not want eowyn to be queen of rohan. You're just quoting the movies and make assumptions. In fact this is a movie line. In the book there is a question before the riding to Helms Deep where Theoden asks who will lead the people. He is told to trust in the House of Eorl. When he says only Eomer remains and he will not stay he is reminded that there is Eowyn who is loved by the people. He then deputizes Eowyn to lead the people. He never appointed her to be the new heir, just a steward to the throne like Denethor. Tolkien was a very conservative, deeply christian man of his time! And that's ok. I hate it when you people try to insert your own little sensibilities into the works of greater men!
I am just floored at the level commitment by Peter Jackson and his team! A year to construct all these for just 8 days of filming!? 🤯 And the end result is just french kiss! 🥹 They deserve all the accolades 👏👏👏
I know I am 2 years late to the party and no one will ever see this but I have to say, I have only watched 12 minutes of the first edit and I'm going to have a very difficult time moving forward. The first 12 minutes are an absolute mess. I had to stop when I realized that you were introducing Greef Karga's showdown with Mando five years too early. Introducing Cobb Vanth, Mando, and Boba without any connective tissue is confusing and weirdly paced. I'm going to watch the rest most likely but begrudgingly. If something doesn't work then it should have been left out. If the thesis of the project is undoable then just leave it alone.
When I reread the scene of the Rohirrim coming out of the wood and riding to the rescue of Gondor, I think for the third time, I had read an account of the 1683 Turkish siege of Vienna. The Turkish cappers and Cannon had breached the walls and Vienna could not hold but then the Poles led by their king, Sobieski, leading the Winged Hussars, charged into the Turkish lines lifting the siege. I think Tolkien may have lifted that bit.
The biggest problem is when the practical work and the cgi don't line up properly. The MI bike jump is a smooth ramp being turned into rough terrain. This causes the bike's wheels to fail to bounce when they should be bouncing.
Conservation is important. But I wish they could build a set like Hobbiton for tourists to come see. Though that would definitely destroy the landscape so it's probably best not to. But even if it was a simple thatched house in the style of Rohan or just the golden hall that would be so epic. Imagine if you could rent each house in the town and stay the night there and they could have events and plays in the Great Hall.
A great moment in TV history. The Middle-west and the Vietnam Specials were also amazing and extremely entertaining. Three of the best episodes from that trio.
The speech before the battle brings tears to my eyes. Kings should lead from the front to be worthy of the title. Leaders these days are craven and use other mother's children to fight their wars.
As a book reader, that would have ruined the film for me as it's not how the books ended at all. Sauron was never in physical form. He needed the one ring for that, and he never reclaimed it because of Frodo and Samwise.
It's interesting that I hear of this, now, a couple years later, just a day after Star Wars Theory's interview with the guy who conceived the Obi-Wan Movie which got canned. It sounds like this edit follows that script nearly beat-for-beat. Some differences, I'm sure, like Leia. And, there was the potential for Cody and Rex to be helping Kenobi on Tatooine. Wish I could watch this, but, some of your requirements are effectively a paywall. But, it goes to show that the fans do the best work. (Yeah. That's a RetroBlasting quote.)
34:10 for some reason I thought the one in charge didn't get his model train set for christmas when he was ten and wanted to express his lingering hatred for everything train. Crashing a real steam locomotive is mean. But then I googled and found out that it's claimed to be a 1:1 model train after all. But one thing is clear: if this had been a real steam engine, the 15 atmospheres of pressure created by 200°C hot water would likely have resulted in a spectacular boiler explosion when the tank ruptured. It's not just the steam in the system. It's a sizeable part of the water that no longer has a reason to stay 200° and sheds all the excess heat by instantly turning into steam as well. Such explosions can lift the tank around 40 meters into the air and send shrapnel hundreds of meters. Including burning coal and all the scalding water.
The best Bond film is Goldfinger. But, the best Bond book is Moonraker. I thought it would have made a spectacular film. I was utterly disappointed with the Moore version. It was a travesty.
"The scale and majesty couldnt be created by green screen " Exactly why all films and shows in the last ten years look shit...They just greenscreen literally EVERYTHING
They totally ruined the scene in the movie by making a cocktail of Theoden and Eomer ... the real poetry shows up when Theoden dies and Eomer leads the attack with the Death chant..............
Prequels: "I'm not confident I can make a new story in a new world, so I'm going to chronicle useless details of better story and world in the past. Give me credit." -Lazy Hack Writer
I wouldnt say it is inspired, but copied instead, because they are not creative enough and/or hate what Tolkien represents. Buying the rights to something and not using the best parts of it can be two things: evil or stupidity.
This is a good video. But I disagree with you using the SW prequels as an example of "all greenscreen" CGI shooting with nobody having an idea how it's supposed to look like. You are repeating dated information. We now know that a substantial part of the SW prequels made use of miniatures and practical VFX far moreso than the Original Star Wars films (The Phantom Menace alone had more than the original films). A number of shots made use of real locations moreover.
This movie has: - Unfunny dialogue - a story so boring and hard to follow I can't even remember anything that happened (I saw the movie again a month ago) - Dumb locations
