I live in Zhengzhou, just west of Kaifeng. A few weeks ago, I was in a government office here and was talking to a young lady from Kaifeng. She inadvertently asked me if I'm a Christian. My normal response is, 'What is a Christian in your understanding?" She laughed and said she understood why I answered with such a question. She then told me that her family were Kaifeng Jews. I then jokingly greeted her in Hebrew (boker tov; good morning). She replied in Hebrew to my surprise. She apparently felt some kind of connection and showed up at an English Corner near my home; again, to my surprise. So they definitely still exist. This girl couldn't have been over 30 years old.

At least one of them, the girl I met, do speak some Hebrew.
About the past: The Chinese version of the Jews in China differs substantially from this Western perception. Chinese records had already mentioned Israelites in China in the 6th Century BCE (after the exile) and they were known as "holy men" in Chinese. In the Present: China has borrowed a page from the Spanish Expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. After the communist takeover in 1949, the Chinese government had systematically altered the term "holy men" [Jews in classical writings] to "han ren" [Chinese men"] ; thus it had erased all the traces of Judaism in China. Today there are thousands of Crypto Chinese Jews that one day may be free to reclaim their ancestors beliefs.
Considering how "christiany" American Jewish Saturday morning services are none of them should be criticising how Jewish people survive in China. If only a memory survives that people say we are Jews then that is enough to restore. I have seen it at home in Lithuania and I have seen it in Poland. As well as the young man who's mother was the daughter of a Jewish girl who survived the war by being taken in by a farming family. Sixty years and three generations with only the memory surviving was enough for their family to restore.
