Bonsai is my hobby that I have enjoyed since the late 1990's. It has brought me much enjoyment and these videos are a glimpse into some of my experiences with bonsai and I hope they will help someone out there. Videos from Bonsai Northwest Melbourne bonsai club are also shared here as well.
Hi David This is India and I tried air layering junipers my first attempt and it’s summer here , with sphagnum moss and after weeks they started drying up the branches which I had air layered , so I checked , the moss was too sluggy probably it got water too much absorbed , a single one the last one hasn’t dried up it’s air layered branch , so my question is How often we have to water the sphagnum moss , because I find most of them were too wet So can you give me something one where to keep air layered junipers , under the shade ? Or where ? Thank you I hope you’ll answer my question I’m your huge fan
@@TheRisingRU-vidr Hi India, thanks for your comment and info on what you are doing. When I do my air layers I put them on in late winter early spring and I don’t water them at all. I might check on them if we have had a long dry spell of weather but it’s usually quite wet still in the bag with spagnum moss. As long as the spagnum moss stays moist then you should have roots forming. Do you have photos of the air layers that failed? You can email me at bonsaiworx@gmail.com so I can check what might have happened.
@@TheRisingRU-vidr I keep my trees that I have air layered in the same spot that they were before. I find that they do much better in warm spots that have a lot of spring sunshine.
So my question again is Should I keep the air layered tree in an open area where it gets sunshine and rain at the same time ? If yes than , doesn’t the water go inside the air layered branch ? Or if I kept it inside , I won’t be able to fetch the plant with the sunshine ! So what am I suppose to do with the whole entire plant ? Should I keep the plant in sunshine and when water hits the entire plant , should I put the plant in shade so that it won’t be able to damage the air layered branch ?
@@TheRisingRU-vidr my conditions will be different to yours. I always leave my trees and layer on full sun and full rain, but that is Melbourne conditions which are very mild in spring, more rain than normal, but by the time early summer comes the roots have already established in the layer and I can remove. I try and keep the plastic around the layer tight, but not too tight and there will normally be enough rain fall to water the air layer naturally. So as long as it gets sunshine and some water from rain then it’s all good. If there is too much water getting into the layer and moss then you will need to tighten the plastic up.
Aussie Dave here David, I cringe every time you wire junipers 😂. I have several junipers and I know how flexible they are, but you create beautiful curves. I love your work. Well done 👏
Awesome tree and great info. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m still learning how to see the tree within! You have a great eye for it. Curious, how long would you leave the wire on for? Thanks
Nice work David getting those bends in during winter I find the wood isn’t as pliable as it is during summer. I’m assuming this is one of your air layers, I have done a few and have potted them up in March this year, how long did you let it just sit in the pot before you started to style it?
@@dirtmonkeyz I mostly do my bends from late summer to end of winter. I avoid spring as I find the cambium tends to pull away from the hardwood and damages the tree. I give my air layers 6 months to a year before working on them. The longer the better.
My wife (not into bonsai) was listening in as i watched. She said "He seems like a really nice man." As always, great content and a really warm, friendly manner.
I take it, its not normal for a jmaple to start its 2nd push of the yr in 97 degree heat? Since u said they dont push again until it gets much cooler. Does this mean that my tree might have a 3rd flush? Wow! Will be beautifull ! Thanks from Kentucky USA
David-when you refer back to another video as you did in this video PLEASE include an onscreen link back to that video so we don’t have to dig through and try to guess which video you are referring to. Thanks
