Gave up a lot of sports or even esports since I was young because of this when I am confident that I can be best at it, I noticed I have a performance anxiety when it is just exhibition or just something is at stake
A 10 year old video has helped me. I’m not an athlete but I was a waiter for 38 years at a really high intensity environment. Waiting to have back surgery. Looking for any type of motivation. This has provided me with a lot of information in a short video.
Hi Currently doing my bachelors in Bsc Exercise and Sports science and im thinking to do my Masters in Msc sports Pyschology , im very intrested in psychology subject as i have a great playing experience in Taekwondo sports so i know the mind set of athelete , i m just looking for more gudience for myself like what would be best for me
I am a recreational tennis player and latelty I have been training everyday and I loved the process. The only peoblem was I was too tense on court and therefore tiring myself needlesly and could not relax.. Last week I broke my ankle on court and suddenly all my training plans came to a halt. I had ankle sırgery and I will not be able to play for another 8 weeks, at least.. I still can't believe this. On the bright side, this sudden change helped me see things differently and loosen in my approach mentally. I totally see my injury on the positive side now. I was tensing more and more everyday and pushing harder, which did not help. But when everything stopped out of my control, I finally let go of the tense approach. Sometimes the solution is a broken ankle :)
I broke my hand back in march 2022 in speed skating.but I got back in sport as soon as I was okay but then last night I broke it again same spot! Same injury worse than before.😔idk what to do now.
I failed while doing one kick so badly I fell on my face got bloody mouth bitten lip and almost probably breaking my last two fingers on my hand that I mostly do tricking on and I n off like 3 weeks probably and I feel like completely shit becuse I can't do nothing and sit back home everyday but I know that when I m read I m gonna be more careful and not do somthing that I don't know how to do and just send it and I know I will come back stronger
I heard you talk about doing psychobiology. Does that field go into things like why the body may be more tense during stress, or more focused when relaxed? If that makes sense? I played basketball in highschool and I noticed the more comfortable I was the better I played. the more anxious I became or let’s say forceful; I would play worse. Being comfortable the game seemed to flow more and I just reacted. When I was forceful or uncomfortable the game seemed impossible. In your opinion if I wanted to go into the research or something like this should I go the path I’m on right now and major in psychology or psychobiology? I would appreciate your feed back, thanks!
Thanks for the info! I have a few questions. Currently in a PsyD program in clinical psychology. The program does not have a sports psychology track. It does have a health psychology track, however. Would you recommend I take this track? Would practicums in health psychology qualify me for sports psych internships? Finally, whether I land an internship in sports psych or not, would you recommend I get a masters in sports psych after I get my PsyD? Thanks in advance!
For sure....go the health psychology track as it will help you in your future career as a sports psychologist. You will be a strong candidate for sports psych internships or just get one in health psych and then go into sports psychology afterwards. I do not believe a masters after that will be necessary; just do a lot of continuing education in sports psych. Good luck!
I’ll see you this I put a lot of different sports I wasn’t a big football guy but I played a tremendous amount of hockey high school college and play juniors up north and I think hockey players have a dismissive attitude about taking injury seriously to the point that in some cases it’s beneficial but in other cases it may lead to re-injuring that same body part or never making a full come back but I think if you interviewed a hockey player about a serious injury they never really dwelled upon it the first thought was when can I go back and play even moments after they’ve been injured you wonder how long will it take to heal
I never really had the opportunity to think too much about my injury it was never really overly discussed some of my injuries were significant but it was never a conversation about being Richard was always a conversation about getting back in playing so the focus was always about getting back to playing because you don’t wanna get caught you don’t want to be left off the team if you’re going into some kind of playoffs you don’t wanna be the guy who doesn’t get a chance to get his name on the trophy or to get a trophy
Tore my lateral meniscus (cartilage) in my right knee on the second day of the new year 2022 in a motocross race. Haven’t had surgery because I can still walk and work and ride I just have to be cautious. And it pops often. But so does my good knee. But yes the injury gives time to think and plan for the comeback. Mind over matter
Same thing happened to me. I play football and i tore my lateral meniscus. I can't play football for 6months because of the surgery. Before the surgery i could still play but felt pain and decided to visit a doctor. The doctor said that i should have a surgery because otherwise when i will be older my knee will be badly damaged. It is a tough challenge mentally and i hope that after that i will be mentally and phisically stronger than before. Wish u luck with your recovery aswell
@@lammaskaru4938 best of luck. When did you injure your knee? And when was surgery? I’m still being Johnny badass. It truly is a double edged sword. Best of luck !
@@donalddonaldson7211 Thank you very much! I tore it about 3months ago. I was playing football and fell and i heared a very loud crack in my knee. I really didn't think much of it at first but then i saw my knee getting bigger and was pretty red. The worst thing was that i continued playing with that pain. Doctor told me that my knee is pretty bad and that i definetly should have a surgery. I had the surgery about 5 weeks ago. Right now i cant use that leg for walking and can start walking after 6weeks, so 1 more week to wait. The depressing part is that i can play football again in october. But mentally i am growing stronger and i will be stronger in the future. It is sad but otherwise i would be in my 30s and cant use my leg. Thank you for asking and best of luck!
@@lammaskaru4938 yeah you don’t want to make it hurt if you don’t have to. My knee didn’t swell up like others have told me theirs did. Luckily after five months I’m able to ride my dirt bike and go about my day without pain as long as I’m cautious. When you start moving it make sure you get your range of motion back and work on your strength In that range of motion. Best of luck. Much love
Fractured 3 bones in my ankle and displaced my growth plate during football practice, I’ve just been worried that I’ll freak out in the middle of a play
Hey man watching this video now with the same problem. Ive been out for 3 months with a fracture in lower back and torn ligament in my ankle. Very true statement
@@user-yy8mk9ox4f ayyy dawg at the gym rn lifting lol. It’s doing really really good. My check up is this friday lol i should be getting cleared. I’ve been working out for about 2 weeks now with not really any problems. just let is rest and don’t do anything and in a couple more months it will feel good. It took me almost a year to recover bc i kept trying to force my self to keep playing b-ball and was hurting it more. Let it rest!!
i feel ya brother. I’m currently dealing with my recovery from surgery of my lower back due to two terrible back fractures that ended my season and the next early.
I needed this! Few months ago I significantly sprain my lower lumbar muscle and the pain is sticking around. I started PT recently, and everytime I try to return to the gym, my back muscles are tight for days! Any tips? Im trying to not obsess about it and be patient.
I am in the same boat. 4 weeks since my injury and even with medical massage and PT the pain is not improving yet. I can’t sit for long periods of time or hinge over at all. It’s taken such a toll on everything
Me too same as you too. I do strength exercises for core and I feel like better but I can't return to stretching now I think we should take a break for months 3 months maybe .if you have other ideas tell me.sorry I don't speak English well
I’m trying to figure out pursuit sport psych or PT I love the idea of both Would it be realistic to be both? Which one has an average high salary as personal experience I value finance highly
You can do both....it would just be a very long educational path that may not bring the financial benefits worth the journey. Both paths will bring you a good salary but I believe psychology could potentially lead to more free lance consulting opportunities that may yield a higher income. Hope this helps.
Thank you for this video. My daughter is an elite athlete and is currently interested in sports psychology as an athlete and also as a career in the future. You did a great job breaking down the different paths. Any suggestions on books or programs I can get her started on? She is 13. Thanks again.
Thanks Ryan. I am obviously bias to my own book Mind of the Athlete and would suggest that for her. An additional book would be Mind Gym. Good movies are 7 Days in Utopia and Peaceful Warrior. All the best to you both!
Thank you, Dr. Spencer for this video. I am currently finishing my MS in mental health counseling and am working within a hospital setting for my internship. During my journey through graduate school I have found out that I have a holistic perspective to counseling. I believe fully in the mind and body working as one. This is why I have also found so much interest in health/ performance psych. I started to notice this interest come out in some of my papers, which were honestly the most fun that i've had writing. The area that I started focusing on is endurance athletes, specifically I wrote about the female athlete triad. As I enter into my last semester I am starting to think about the next steps I would like to take and I believe that working with an athlete population is part of this path. Again I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video, it has given me a lot to think about.
All great information! Thank you! And, I heard you say you're in Bethlehem, PA! I grew up in Lansdale... not too far from you! I'm just at the beginning of my sports psych journey, and I'm really excited! I hope we cross paths one day!
