Hey, did you have to pay VAT when you purchased your Evo from Japan? I found a white SQ10 on Ebay but the seller is from Japan as well. The price is approx 150 GBP without shipping and Im wondering it's worth it
Good video. Nice delivery, easy to understand, no blaring background noise or strange staccato delivery which I keep hearing elsewhere. Good examples shown . Based on these I would buy the 90 not the Evo . It would have been very helpful if you could have told us do the settings remain when you switch the camera off, or do you have to go through all the rigmarole every time you switch the camera on? Someone else asked this but there is no answer. Maybe I can find the specs somewhere. Very nice sound and vision, I like your style as an old guy used to say to me years ago. I'm old myself now but photography keeps me active. Best wishes Jake E.
I think that the square format hybrid cameras are closer to the instant film output from a regular instant camera, while the mini format hybrid cameras are just too digital looking for me. Fuji instant film is kind of more digital-esque than say Polaroid film. But maybe the SQ20 having a weaker lens is actual a deliberate decision to keep the output more soft/more like tradtional instant film ? I was torn between the two square formats but even though the 20 doesn't have a tripod socket I am willing to sacrifice that due to the ability to skim through videos for perfect frames... really great for street photography and sports. Great thorough review. Thanks.
Have you shot with the SQ10 or SQ20? I own the SQ10 and also the SQ6. The SQ10 doesnt look "digital" to me. In fact, the SQ6 has a better quality lens with sharper photos and looks more clean and digital to me than the SQ10 which has a lo-fi look to the photos.
Very helpful. This is exactly why I was disappointed in the Square hybrids. The shots were no were near as good as the ones I shot with the standard instax mini or square cameras. And The Evo looks like a fun and great camera with the blutooth connection to make it a printer is fantastic... but if the prints are blown out or inconsistent or just overall suck, well I just won't use it. Thank you this saved me $200 for an evo. Will just have to wait for the next one.
Thank you for comparison. Heard about these cameras and always wanted to know difference. Now after watching your video. I like all of them and yet none of them completely would be satisfying... I like some things there and some there... but anyway in my country almost impossible to buy it (we have mini 11 and sq6 here, but I like to save and edit) and now one want to send, because of the war. Will hope when war is over they will make something better and new... until that will watch videos like that. Thanks again!
This is a great video. I've had many Instax cameras over the years and the Neo 90 is definitely the best analog camera they produce. I've had the SQ6 as you mentioned and it was a nice camera but it won't even stand up with the lens out without a tripod due to the balance whereas the Neo 90 will. I have the Instax Link Wide printer to print my holiday photos off as I love instant film, and I've just bought yet another Neo 90 as analog photography is so fun. You are more mindful of what you're photographing with true analog. Also, the Evo seems to be a little too toy-like in build quality compared to the Neo 90.
Does mini 90 remembers the mode after you turn off and on camera or you have always desable the flash and scroll through the menu for your favorit mode when you turn on the camera?
I have one, used it last year and from my experiences it’s almost unusable indoor with flash, including selfies. Outdoor in bright light conditions I got quit good results without (!) using the flash and the sun most behind me. Very important is that the temperature is not exceeding 22-23 degrees C. At higher temperatures there is the magenta cast.
On the 90, if there is enough bright light in the scene (indoors or out), the flash will not fire unless forced on. The default setting (no icon) is an “auto flash based on circumstances. Your approach is correct, however: just turn the flash off when outside. Interestingly, there is a somewhat silly way to determine if the camera thinks flash is needed: turn the flash off and if the flash-off icon blinks, then the camera is warning you of insufficient light. You can then decide to keep it off or turn it on, or choose the auto setting (no icon). If, however, you turn the flash off and the flash-off icon does not blink, then you know the camera thinks there’s sufficient light.
This is the best comparison video of these four cameras I’ve seen - and I believe the more serious photographer who wants to use a hybrid Instax camera would definitely be considering these four. Sadly, Fuji has done what so many companies do: introduce a good quality initial product (SQ10), then in follow-on products reduce the quality, lower the specifications, while adding dubious improvements. The video frame grab of the SQ20 is the only real improvement. At 15:46 your summary of the perfect camera makes sense - I hope Fuji is listening. Aside from my many film and digital cameras, my choice for Instax was the Neo 90. It gives me the controls I want, but in practical use it’s not spontaneous.
I owned a Mini 90, and it was nice, but you're correct in saying that you can waste alot of film. I like the Evo, because you can refine the shots you want (pretty much) then print later, MUCH less film wastage. All in all, they're fun cameras, so I don't get too precious about the end results!
I've noticed with Instax (mini) that the prints do darken a bit over time. I had some pictures in a wallet for about a year, and noticed that they had become darker by about 5%. Not a big deal, but just worth noting in case you choose to underexpose your original shots.
Hi, do you happen to know any reason why my sq20 printing darker than it supposed to be? I didnt change or use any effects on them. Before print the picture in the screen looks fine (bright) but after printing, it appear darker. Hope you can give an advice. Thanks a lot
I think that's just how it is tbh, I watched a video on sq20 and it's naturally darker when printed. The shadows are super dark compared to others like the sq6 which is lighter. If u want to watch the vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P42np5j87w4.html
Hi Seby Sabrina, I agree with Syfrenee, the screens on all of the hybrid range appear brighter than how they print. You can can increase the exposure before printing to make your pictures brighter under exposure control, which may help but it is difficult to tell how it will print without experimenting. Thanks for watching, Dee
Hey great video! I have a question. Dont you think the LiPlay takes/prints photos more like instant/polaroid camera? The pictures printed from the Evo look more like a standard good quality digital camera. LiPlay gives that vintage or traditional instant/polaroid camera look to photos. The older cameras in the instax mini series e.g. the mini 90 and the mini 40 also give the same look as the LiPlay to photos. It would be great to have your advice. I cant really decide between the Evo and the LiPlay. Which one should i buy
I believe that there are filter options on the evo.. I did watch a video prior to this and said that the exposure is a little bit higher on the evo as well, idk if that plays a part. I really want to get this camera but I really want that Polaroid look as well
I think it has to do with the fact that lilplay tech has a printer similar to instax analog cameras, with a camera whose spec is at the early 2000s digital camera level. While the evo printer aspect is on the same level as the instax mini with a camera that tries to be as powerful as possible (within its budget) which contributes to the photos giving more of an new digital camera vibe.
The rich mode makes the prints look digitalized whereas the natural mode gives it the “nostalgic” vibes. I dont have an analog camera so i dont have anything to compare it with.
I have mini LiPlay and I’m don feel that my device is old already. It’s still getting software update. My usual use cause as portable printer . And for this case device is still amazing!!

Thanks for an excellent review. I’ve been enjoying your recent reviews . I’ve had the Evo for a few days now and like you I like the monochrome the best with the vignette option. I do wonder whether they could’ve provided a better sensor, offered some of the classic Fujifilm film filters and made the menu a little less clunky. Perhaps it might be too much to hope for the latter two in a future firmware update. Thanks again and keep up the good reviews.
It hopefully will improve slightly over time. I find the presets helpful for selecting my favourite combinations. I agree Fuji should definitely look at a better sensor, think that would attract more people. Thanks for watching and your comment :)
