7 years too late but just to mention the TFT CD is absolutely NOT a target pressing, which believe it or not have a target printed on the face, and this does not. Look it up. Calls into question your other claims about some of these discs, the compression, the mastering etc you’re off on some of that as well. Have a great day.
I own the Dire straits Brothers in arms and also Tears for fears songs of the big chair SACD...outstanding quality... The brothers in arms i even preffer the 5.1 version...its a refference disc, no doubt about it 👍🏻 songs from the big chair also, but the other Tears for fear SACD also sound very good.
In Amused to Death, with a good stereo setup or headphones you can hear Water’s voice move three dimensionally and even transition behind your head in some parts.
Best SOUNDING albums Christopher Cross - Christopher Cross (1979) Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (1985) Tears for Fears - Songs for the Big Chair (1985) Tears for Fears - The Seeds of Love (1989) Sting - Nothing Like the Sun (1987) Roger Waters - Amused to Death (1992)
Brothers in Arms was digitally recorded. The SACD is Amazing. When I want to demo the difference between CD and SACD I play the intro to Money For Nothing. The SACD is so dynamic. Songs from the Big Chair is also available on SACD and is the most dynamic version I have. I have every CD issued from the original through the remastered and deluxe and Super Deluxe CD. The best vinyl pressing of SFTBC is an 80s gatefold pressing done in Canada on heavy weight vinyl and the gatefold has a booklet inside. This is cut very loud and is a great listen. My OG USA pressing doesn't compare. My 2nd favorite pressing is the 2014 Steve Wilson remix. His 5.1 mix is also great. But the best TFF remix is the Hurting on Blu Ray. That blows everything away. It's so well done.
80's releases by PolyGram group sound great - they were owned by Philips, so making the format sound best was their objective. IMO best disc for testing an audio system are 'Pure Perfect Sound' (this was was added to Philips CD Players), the Hightech Series (DDD classical recordings), and compilations like 'Hits on CD', 'Compact Hits' or other compilation albums from PolyGram.

It's a crying shame that so many "remastered" CD releases are sonically inferior to their predecessors. It's appalling that mastering standards have moved so far in the direction of gratuitous compression. By the way, there are at least two distinct stereo mixes of _Amused to Death_ -- the 1990s original and the 2015 revision. I concur with your opinion about the album's sound quality vs. its overall quality.
