The crew looked to be having so much more fun playing Galaxy Trucker, so I’m genuinely shocked that everyone easily conceded Ra was better than Galaxy Trucker without discussion even.
I'm so close to wanting to buy this. Maybe I'm more put-off by the uniformly white characters than I should be, but I think the only friends I would want to play this game with would be similarly put off by it. It's also a big ask in terms of rules explanation and a bad manual is one of my least favorite things in games. That said... it looks like such a good game, and a classic that I shouldn't miss.
"Is there a better Egyptian themed Auction game?" actually yes and it's also a Reiner Knizia game that recently got a deluxe crowdfunding glow-up. AKA Amun-Re. I do absolutely love RA and it deserves to have a place as a classic, but I've always liked Amun-Re just a touch better...
I'm not so much a fan of auction games either, but "Ra" would be somewhere on the top of my favorite games if I made a lit. Way above the ones covered so far (Galaxy Truckers would not be there). The only other auction game, where auctioning is the primary thing in the game would be "For Sale" for me. But I do like "Ra" better.
The biggest issue with this game is you can't plan your turns correctly with a large amount of enemies because they have dice rolls. IE their moves are random. You don't know if you need to block or deal damage so you can't play optimally and it ends up feeling like a gamble more than a skill based decision like in the digital game.
The bigest problem with the Boardgame is that the Videogame exists. Like you said there is also Bloodborne the Boardgame. I like it a lot becasue i got minis to paint from one of my favourite Videogames and the Boardgame feels like different enough to play but also feels like kind of like the Videogame. But Slay the spire is just like slay the Spire with more "manual labour" its really really really good as a Cardgame but whenever i set up the Shop, when i reset my deck, i plae and remove tokens during one turn i think "yeah i can have that faster" The one thing that made me get the BG is the coop. its quick to teach and lots of fun and perfect for a Gameight where you wan to have a game that is kind of crunchy and also kind of fast to play. Maybe in a perfect world we would have got the Board game first and then the Videogame.
Hot Take: Every 10 games ranked, y'all should be allowed to swap 2 games on the list. Makes the "this game is better than El Dorado, but worse than Agricola" all talk all the more interesting, especially if it keeps coming up. But keeping the swaps limited makes them all the more precious and contested
I would probably put Agricola as my #3 favorite board/tabletop game of all time, so to see these other games be put above it, just hurts my soul! :( Or maybe it means I really need to play these games... I have not yet played neither El Dorado nor Ra, but I want to
I'd actually opt for you to create something like "tier lists" and have the option for seveRAl games to be on the same level. It can still be a top 100, there's just not a clear hieRArchy of 100 RAnks so to speak.
Fucking christ, do NOT put 'ra' in 'el dorado'. Just put it in a numbered list. I'm begging you. I never ask much from folks on the internet, but never felt so strongly about anything before. Just keep the format of the list consistent.
This is great, loving the carnage when it comes to try and sort of the relative positions. I think I'd like the ranking to change to a rock, paper, scissors format; just to make it harder to manage 😝
this episode felt a bit too off the cuff, it was basically a poorly prepared podcast, which feels like a bit of a step down in quality compared to what i expect from susd
