I wonder where this whole "teaching is easy" nonsense coming from. I was student growing up, and I've often noticed how some of my teachers were stressed when facing children and teens soon-to-be young adults. Some teachers were very passionate about their career and stuck it in there. Others looked like after 2 or 3 decades of teaching was ready to get out of there. I rarely had teachers who really believed in their craft and would seek to help students. Otherwise, they felt they were failing their students. After meeting the late Mr. Pearce from my College Algebra, I knew I had to step it up, even though it wasn't easy, and I had to do it for myself with a bit of motivation from the talk I had with him about his teaching and my struggling grades in Algebra at the time. He definitely helped me think a bit more about math and to respect myself as a person. The main point I'm making is that some people who get into teaching are just rushing into their careers without considering every possibility, every future conversation with parents, kids, and their school staff. On top of paperwork and other work you have to be attentive to be ready for the next day and now there's things that shown that teachers can't even be allowed to be fair and honest with parents with troublesome children who refused to behave. I've learned that wherever you go, nothing is easy as one may think. It may start out depending on circumstances, but people often notice the difficulty somewhere. And these recent circumstances are difficult due to circumstances that some teachers and other members of the board are trying to make better but are being tasked by what could be some of the worst current members of the school staff and school board who care about passing kids no matter how ridiculous it is than holding people accountable for their mess-ups. Even if you could ridiculously pass failing students with problems caused by their environment, their own parents and their own actions, that alone doesn't resolve the problems within the child and the parents who are responsible for raising said child. That's like if you were successfully cheating to each grade until graduation. You got through school through questionable means, but you are still expected to demonstrate that stuff in the real world wherever you go. Especially college which prerequisites persists that you have to have knowledge of every subject that you've learned in school. If you don't know anything by that point, good luck relearning them.
Education in the UK is broken with over 44,000 teachers of working age leaving in each of the past two years. Relentless and brutal pressures and lack of support is endemic. Bullying managers are allowed by the system to act with impunity. Behaviour is atrocious in many schools with lack of parental support widespread. Unions are mostly useless and there is no solidarity in education, with everyone looking the other way and keeping their heads down in the hope they will not be targeted for no good reason. I taught for nearly thirty years in two secondary schools and was considered effective. My circumstances changed when a new head arrived, which may of course just be remarkable coincidence. My position became untenable in my estimation so I secured a reference which I was given a copy of before leaving snd redundancy pay for long service. Over two and a half years later I am still badly afected by how I was treated and it has shaken my confidence to the core. I do not know whether I can face returning to the job for fear that I might be targeted in future. At the same time, I do not see why my career should be derailed for no good reason and my finances suffer. I was fortunate to be over 50 with no mortgage and money in the bank plus my wife carried on working. Most newly qualified teachers do not last more than five years due to appalling conditions of service. I was always supportive of other colleagues as a head of department and union representative for a number of years but when I was unjustly treated, no-one supported me. I know he was talking about entirely more serious and challenging issues in respect of apartheid in South Africa, but Desmond Tutu's words that if you do not oppose opression you condone it are very true in all walks of life, including education. Having seen my career trashed for nothing, I feel very strongly about the waste of talent on a vast scale of teachers who put heart and soul into their work only to find the toxicity of the system overwhelms them in the end so that they are compelled to leave for their own self preservation. Every country needs strong and capable teachers but I would never recommend the job to anyone in their twenties knowing what I do about the diabolical problems in the system.
I'm entering teaching at the ripe old age of 47. Marred for 25 years and 4 adult children who have all left home. I am hoping my current life circumstances and adult experiences will see me through. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Yesterday I looked for something on Teddy Roosevelt and thought I'd try to follow your instructions like I was a student. I think I just didn't find a very appropriate source article. I'm going to try again today using one of your source articles. Also, I'm going to start out with the 3rd grade level. My 5th graders aren't good writers to begin with. I'll start with the paragraph and then move up to the essay. The only specific question I have is how to do the formative assessment. They will have circled one detail in red for a formative assessment. It seems like more of a pass/fail thing to me. You're adorable and so bright and energetic. Your district lost a good teacher. Such a shame.
I so agree with the divided attention when teaching whole group because of being so aware of which students are not truly looking or focusing like you want them to and that really affects how you present the material. I have done the same thing the last two years that I started teaching third through fifth grade math classes and this year I will be doing fifth and sixth grade math classes so I’m going to continue, creating some of my own videos and it’s unfortunate that we can’t see yours here but I like the 4-problem as well and the template. Thank you so much for this video and sharing.
