Hello my name is Chris Pattle and welcome to my channel. I am an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) and my channel is about all things LEGO. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy my videos
@@pattle It's all licenced figures, skipping over all the original LEGO creativity that makes this brand fun and different... you gotta know other LEGO fans would be a bit... yeah, triggered! x)
Most of the figures aside from the comic con figures were around $15 - $30. I do think that how good a minifigure looks is one of the factors that affects its value.
It seems like such an unusual way of making money to me. It clearly works, but investing in stocks doesn't require large amounts of storage and upsetting whoever you might be living with because they tripped over a pile of boxes.
Thanks for sharing. Yeah people are trash and swap out sets then send it back you will find it was probably one of the amazon ones. Your eBay customer probably was telling the truth. Double edge issue you could check the contents of the box once you get in the mail but then is in no longer BNIB.
never again he says as he writes his script, films his scenes, edits his video of him crying for attention on the internet. god youtubers really are bottom of the barrel.
The only good thing about Lego is that if I ever get tired of the hobby I can resell my sets with no money loss and if lucky some profit. Due to budget and space lately I'm more into collecting minifigures now and avoid buying any large set.
Two things. If Amazon has it on constant discount, its over produced/stocked. Secondly, exclusive sets from the Lego store should always be the first investment. Bonus third, nostalgia is the reason for old Lego being expensive.
Good point about Amazon. Although some sets like speed champions that are always available at a discount on Amazon always seem to increase a lot in price after retirement. On your point about nostalgia. Do you think sets like the new Eldorado Fortress will be a good investment?
@@pattle I could see any revisit to a theme going up. Pirates don't quite hit like Space and Castle, but if it has fabric sails and minimal stickers, people will definitely want it. A decent pirate movie would help the theme too lol!
9:44 worst chart ever. Of course the older sets have a higher ROI ...... sets need time to go up in price. Should have found a graph with yearly ROI not total return. Thats like saying people who bought S&P500 are worse off than people who did in 1950. Yeah.... no shit
This video is fantastic. Very realistic & more people should think twice before putting their savings into sets. Always think about why you are really buying the sets; is it to make a profit or do you want to justify spending on your collection?
Thanks for the kind words. I think people feel safer investing in LEGO over other things because even though they do want to make money they are probably like “oh well if it doesn’t go up at least I can get enjoyment from it”
I was able to procure the Imperial Flagship through marketplace on Facebook new in the box, sealed for about $500.00 several years ago. It's a lovely set that I have since modified quite a bit. I would advise you - if you are going for this particular set it may be more cost-effective to part it out in Bricklink, as none of the parts are really set exclusive, and the ship doesn't have much substance within it. The minifigures will set you back a pretty penny, as the set does contain a few exclusive figures, but besides that I can't justify the price for a new-sealed ship. I do not have any regrets getting it, as it was once one of my White Whales, but seeing how expensive they have become it's just not worth it.
I also stopped reselling LEGO about 8 years ago for the same reasons. I also find LEGO is now even more expensive than ever and fewer retailers have sales. Since there are so many good LEGO sets now, it's no big deal missing out on a few of them.
I don't invest in LEGO anymore, maybe the odd set I'll buy with the intention of selling later on. It's still fun to speculate as to what sets will do well post retirement but I really only buy sets for building later.
I believe you are spot on about #1: The Indiana Jones Temple Set is amazing. A great build with excellent playability and a wonderful display. It's on sale as of this date on Amazon.
You are one of my favorite Lego creators man. You are just you and I’m absolutely okay with that and continue to be you my guy. Looking forward to see you progress as time goes on 👍
Most of what you said here is true but you also missed on a lot of the positives with Lego… there’s lots of very investable sets but highly dependent on themes, production, length on the shelf, etc. it’s an art to find the right sets and people are doing it as a primary business
I invest my money in a global ETF and occasionally sell my old LEGO sets. Just to sell the occasional set is already a lot of effort. I'm glad I don't have all my money tied up in LEGO sets.
Interesting information that you have provided, my strategy comes directly form people that are selling LEGO in South Africa. Like in South Africa people are going more after Star Wars the Clone Wars sets. One person sold all his LEGO Star Wars Clone Wars sets for R160 000.00 which is a lot. I even noticed that when a Clone Wars set appears on Facebook market place it is old within a few hours. Currently I don't just buy randomly, I chose a specific theme and buy sets from it and sell it accordingly which is the Clone Wars sets. I will rather keep it for 5 to 6 years then sell it to ensure the sets increases in value.
Interesting to hear about other countries. There’s probably quite a bit of money to be made selling international if you can be bothered with the red tape etc
@@pattle maybe but that's not the purpose. The thing is in South Africa we only get a limited amount of sets. So if it's sold out you won't be able to get the set anywhere else except overseas which is really expensive especially shipping costs. THe same thing is happening in Australia as well. As mentioned I would rather buy Star Wars clone sets and sell the set at a later stage.
I started the journey about three years ago. I agree with some of what you said. Lego reselling isn't for everyone and is not easy money as some would make it out to be. I'm an expat living in Asia and I have found that retail arbitrage works well because of the cultural and language differences. I can capitalize upon this. Shipping is also extremely inexpensive and convenient. I make 3k USD a month in sales minimum. I just sell mostly minifigures, a few retired sets I picked up cheap and now parts. I made the same mistake as you in the beginning by buying when sets were on sale but not about to retire. I think overall I have had more good than bad experiences and will continue along this path. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I wish I had watched this video sooner before I made some of the same mistakes
Thanks for sharing your experiences too. I guess mistakes are inevitable, we just need to learn from them. Sounds like are doing really well now though! Appreciate you watching the video. Take care
