I just started leasing a horse and when tacking up and trying to get her out of her stall she gets aggressive and will reach out to bite and sometimes kick. It makes me nervous to tack her up. I don’t want to have a negative response because I want to build trust with her, but I also don’t want to get hurt. Any tips?

What a cool set up! I'm always trying to find ways to streamline the day to day chores. I love that you feed primarily forage based. I feel like a mad scientist when I'm mixing my grain, with the different grains and supplements! 😂

Cocked leg doesn't all ways means he's relaxed. A cocked leg could also mean to total opposite (Ready to run). At least that's what I experience with my wild mustangs.

So far I agree completely, I went exactly with my mustang. slow is key, they have to process everything we do to see if we're going to harm them.👍

I love it that you have a rescue !!! They can be great horses IF handled with kindness and respect . Best horses I ever had was an Arabian stallion that I bought from Welcome Arabians near you . Rita De Leon trained him , raced him, and stood him at stud , then I got him !! (He was NOT a rescue).

I agree 1000% ! I have a rescue now and he was very thin when I got him. I took things slowly and he is a different horse now. He is a hot little Arabian gelding (broke to ride) and when I led him at first he would spook and knock me down . Now he has excellent ground manners and is respectful of my space. He is fat and very happy now even though he is by himself. I spend a lot of time with him and can do everything I do to him with him loose in his pen (except paste worm him , ha. I need a halter for that). He is very loving and almost seems to know how much better his life is now --where he gets fed twice daily and free choice on costal plus a pen big enough to run in. He comes running whenever I come out to see him (I do not give treats- just hugs and love) and nickers even though it is not feed time. He has really blossomed !

I never put water in my horses feed I feed tragedy and creep pellets
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben 4 дня назад
😂😂😂 I don't know if that was intentional, but it sure was hysterical! I've had 2 episodes of choke from horses bolting dry pellets in the past, and it COULD have turned to tragedy, so... tragedy and pellets is perfect! 😂 I wet my feed now... more hydrating, less choke risk.

Best horse I ever had was a n Arabian stallion that had raced, then stood at stud. I got him when he was 18 years old and 2 weeks after I got him I felt comfortable enough to ride him bareback beside a busy road. He went over 2 lane bridges with 18 wheelers and school buses passing by and never even batted an eye. I give my horse lots of attention and ground work and love and he Blossomed ! I could do everything to him without a halter or anything on him , even paste worm him ! What a GREAT horse! and a very special gift to me.

Totally agree. Especially if you're going to ride off the property where you are likely to encounter other people's dogs or livestock. A number of months ago I was hand walking my mare before she was being ridden and the neighbors dog came running up, barking like crazy. They apologized and ran to get her but it didn't bother me because it was good training for her. Now when I ride her out, the community dogs that run around don't bother her at all.

I’m so glad you said this. I look at horse videos all the time and see some of the most angry, judgmental and divisive comments! Also people are often extremely insulting about techniques, opinions, etc. I never understood that! I am a newbie and trying to learn all I can.
