What he was saying about rich people controlling the news media whilst having a particular perspective, regardless of the perspectives objectivity, should be so clear to anybody that lived through the past few years he's actually giving away a lot more than some would understand in pretty much every comment in this video, he literally tried to warn us about everything and nobody listened

Wrt to function of self is also to limit utilization of brain resources..like number of functions or computations . Because there are resources to do millions of functions but when self comes into picture the focus gets put on liking and interest of self and hence resources are conserved

Amazing how the brain works: One lecture somebody called him Rama And I thought - there must be an interesting story behind how he got this nickname So then I found a video thumbnail with a picture of him and "Rama" in the title. I clicked, thinking - I might get the answers here. And then it came to me - Rama is short for Rama-chandran! Amazing how the brain works. When it works.

Got nothing to do with consciousness. Consciousness not found in the brain.
@RaviAnnaswamy
@RaviAnnaswamy Год назад
To avoid confusion in thinking, Descartes closed the door saying "I think therefore (I am going to take for granted) I exist (in a body and I am only going to study and talk about what comes after that is given)" and modern science entirely turned to object-ive phenomena, de-scribable and de-fineable. Even psychology tries to explain mind as outer behavior or abstract models and beliefs used to help outer behavior. Good so far. Except, it is hard to make the Subject 'I exist" as the object. This is the common conundrum in both consciousness studies and entanglement/delayed choice paradoxes. The answer is that in truth, 'I exist AND THEN I think'. So the 'feeling of being present' is not a perception, it is pre-cognition, pra-jna. Brain is in awareness not the other way. Animals and plants and germs without a 'brain' also have awareness. The conundrum is because there are no two 'I exist'. There can be multiple body consciousnesses but only ONE existence-awareness (Satchit in Indian philosophy view). This is why flipping of measuring instrument volitionally changes history of what happened in Bell experiment. The 'one' stream has to become coherent with the Now even if it means it has to re-state history.

It's becoming clearer that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

It’s so frustrating that they’re speaking of the need to protect the environment in such stark terms way back in 1989. Put these two in a time machine 31 years later to 2020 and they’d be aghast at what little progress we’ve made, and how climate change denial is still so widespread and prevalent.

No. In fact, we're very good at it. The amount of protest compared to the amount of riot is, I think, very civil. Peoples" tendency to hyper-focus on the negative (violence/looting/vandalism) often overshadows (but, doesn't discount) the overwhelming, good, honest voices int the streets.

Sagan always had a bug up his ass about SDI. He was correct about SDI being a hoax but it was a hoax on the Soviets and it worked. Sagan was brilliant but he was totally stupid when it came strategy and brinkmanship. He was so focused on the technology it never occurred to him the other motives at play. Rest In Peace Carl but you were right and wrong about SDI.
