It's interesting how, with the original audio logs, using people who were not professional VAs made them sound more realistic. They sounded like actual office workers, especially ones trapped in increasingly desperate circumstances.
It’s probably because since they weren’t professionals, they just sounded how a regular person would sound in that scenario. The workers aboard the Citadel Station were your “average joes” after all.
Yes I noticed that aswell except I found their deliveries to become increasingly flat the more desperate the situation got. The "pre-disaster" audio logs sound perfect because it's literally just a bunch of average Joe's talking about work related things, daily life on the ship etc
to those who didn't understand at first: everything was starting at the highest level, which is the sky and going down to magma level trying to fill the whole map is suicide so he just used a small chunk also no, this isn't done lazily, it probably isn't made out of God mode, trying to sculpt this is hell, hell going up is carpeltunnel hell as well.
0:34 When I finally understood, that all the metaphorical air around the frames was actual air 😂 Did you consider posting this on reddit or the forums?
I think it wouldve been funnier if they didn't mention Rifftrax and just let it sink in to the player like, "Mike Nelson? From MST3K? Wait, those voices sound familiar...it totally is them!" Instead, we basically get "Hey, we're the MST3K guys if you haven't figured it out already."
I like the concept of this but we need a full US Mod which consists of American Sonic, The Past Soundtrack US and some others which will make the entire game a US Game Pack!
This might come off as a rant but the audio logs of the original I think were in some significant ways better, they were more serious and not hyper-emotionalized to the point of casting doubt on if these people were real at all. The Shodan audio logs tend to vary, I do appreciate the larger selection but the voice is too monotone. I'd think in 5 decades AI would be able to simulate emotions to some extent in it's dialogue. Also in the original the glitch sounds were often used as a punctuation to something she's thinking about, in this version it seems to be more generally 'thrown around'. She also speaks much slower and uncertain, unlike how the original was optimized and faster thinking. (After all it is an AI right?) The crew logs are also a bit blander in some ways. They sound too hyperbolic and depressed rather than even remotely focused, I'd imagine Triop doesn't just send any mere clown with a associates degree to their premiere space station, System Shock 2 got the crew audio logs near-perfect for the most part as the crew seems scared but they're mostly acting normal rather than an emotion NPC, they to some extent try to think and come up with plans rather than sobbing into the data recorder all day. Even Diego is vastly more bland, and for some reason he's now British...? Whilst in the original he acts like a weasel, trying to get out of a mess he's stepped in when he was getting too greedy and unknowingly getting himself in deeper, constantly looking for an out, even going so far as to join the AI later on. Though to be fair, SS1's Rebecca is really bad, it sounds like some teacher trying to tell you about apples. Overall I feel like the audio logs could be good, but it feels like they asked people to be far too monotone and depressed, that and the facial animations look off and too reflective, it adds to the chuck-e-cheese automaton appearance. They seem way too much like NPCs I'd say is the biggest issue.
Edward Diego was apparently meant to be South African in the remake. They swear it was just a coincidence, but a lot of folks see a not-too-subtle parallel to Elon Musk.
48:00 "Welcome to my DEATH MACHINE! Interloper" still lives rent free in my head. While I prefer the harshness of the original, the remake's where Shodan sounds so happy with herself is fine too. Was expecting the same harsh tone of her sounding annoyed all over again but her being playful and toying with the Hacker works too.
This is massively underrated! The amount of effort in this is clearly visible and I love all the references put in and the progression to make it fit the music is just 👌👌👌
"And you, my children, are my avenging angels.." That Shodan foreshadowing there. Probably about The Many that would later got introduded in SS2 and they would say "Why are you serving our mother?"
ngl the newer audio logs always worked better, they just sound less stiff, but classic diego will always be the better diego. also that one audio log (in research i think) where she just sounds mildly inconvenienced that the world is gonna end is just so cheeks :/
I think a lot of the new SHODAN lines are a lot less intimidating than the ones from the original. nothing beats the original line delivery of "welcome to the throne room of god", it's so chilling. she also does that weird creepy whispering voice a lot less often. i really like how the line delivery in the original game feels a lot more intentional, it comes off like she's trying to scare the shit out of you.
OG Rebecca sounded way more urgent and believable as a government worker. Re-Becca sounds like your gf on the phone having a nice, casual conversation where she talks about her feelings.
