It’s a strange comparison to make. Moreschi is, as all singers did (and ought to today), singing by using/mixing both chest voice and head voice/falsetto (the nomenclature is used differently by different singing masters). Jarrousky is singing in pure falsetto, like all countertenors do today, for some reason. That is the reason for the clarity of tone and clear vowels of Moreschi. All male voices (even non-castrati) could use this technique and use their whole voices and thereby sound less hooty and falsetto-ish and have clearer vowels. Unfortunately, modern singing pedagogy has forgotten the importance of the chest voice. You can also hear Moreschi’s use of the coup de glotte, the glottal attack. It might sound foreign to our modern ears, but it was how you sang back then, and the basis for the voices of old never seeming to age, lasting for decades. Unfortunately, again, the coup the glotte has been forgotten (and vilified) leading to the sub par voices of today that often only last a couple of years before they are ruined.
Anna
Technically superior? Cecilia Bartoli, hands down. But emotion? She doesn't have the pain, the fragility in her voice. Remember this was composed for a castrato. Imagine the dolor, the shame and the high price they had to pay for their fame? I think Franco Fagioli wins in the end, because he carries la opera seria to its ultimate victory, because he understands the material.
Interesting. To me, Fagioli has technique over any counter tenor I know, and obviously over Bartoli. She's a half-natural, sung this way since early childhood, it was impossible to correct it and make a proper opera singing technique.
There isnt that much difference, apart from the first guy has giant lungs and never takes a breather. Maybe you had to be in the same room for the acoustics to work for you😊
People always say that Moreschi's singing sounds haunting or creepy, but I wonder if that's at least in part down to the style of singing. He drags the note up and down, portamenti I thinks it's called, which gives a creepy sound.
Baryshnikov. The first dancer was too...heavy,I guess, earthbound,I saw power but I didn't see elegance or grace, and those qualities should not be limited to female dancers. He's obviously talented, just not to my taste.
Bravo !
