Both the books and the show are incredibly juvenile, and blatantly incurious about the very concepts they explore. And as the critic has stated, this is a bit of "baby's first scifi" material.

I really wish these shows weren't half as disgusting and nasty as they are, because everytime I watch videos like these I get a feel of "yeah! I DO want to become more educated on these themes and enjoy it" and then end up having trouble eating and even feeling safe in my own skin for hours if not a whole day or more. It is simply way too gratutitous(?) and I wish there was a censored version, or someone picking the themes up and re-planting them in a completely different series.
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 2 месяца назад
Not that I'm a particular fan of gore or ultraviolence, or seek media out for that, but I have watched enough stuff that enough of it was gory and ultraviolent that I'm definitely desensitized. Animation just has no effect on me, but occasionally some live action stuff does make me uncomfortable if and when the story was adequately setup, in which case its not gratuitous and I just have to stomach the discomfort if I want to continue the story. There's only so many themes to go around so you'll definitely find them somewhere else... not that you'll know if you don't watch both. The problem is: the more you watch the more you'll come across graphic imagery that makes you think 'yeah, I'd rather not today' and for that I sympathise. Either you suffer through enough it's not a problem anymore, or you'll never like it, and that's ok; there's plenty of media out there for a lifetime.

@@Ozunoda Very true, we each have our own limits and these are usually mine. I think this falls a lot under the "Listening to true fan of something can hype you up to try nailing your eyelids to your earlobes!" As for the thematic part I find it a 50/50, many things tackle a theme poorly, or simply convey it poorly without forethoughts to look out for it. Even so, good videos like these (that should have more interactions) do give away a good bit to us of weak stomaches! Thank you.

One of them does go "Caaaw" right before they eat the drugged cupcakes, but I'm struggling to remember if they have any dialogue in the books or films before Hallows. Kinda scummy if they didn't get proper credit or pay because they didn't have dialogue (its not like they're extras), but that sounds like a myth.

The movies are NOT canon. They take place in the 2000s. That's why it's fine that Vernon drives a model car from the 2000s and the bridge destroyed in the beginning of the 6th movie opened in the year 2000.

haven't watched yet, but Goblet is my favorite HP film. I found the acting had gotten so much better from the main 3, and also the scene where Cedric's dad is sobbing "that's my SON, that's my BOYYY" while jovial music plays in the background was the most impactful acting in the whole franchize imo. Always makes me cry even before I had children. I didn't necessarily like the teen drama aspect but it did lead to some funny moments and thought it made the kids feel like actual teens rather than story book characters which was desperately needed for a gang that is always on some secret mission or has abilities unique even for witches and wizards haha we all are susceptible to the mundanity of love drama and embarassment and tantrums

Well actually.....there was alot of teen stuff in the previous books as well it just wasn't adapted to the films eg- PoA had the whole Hermione and Ron/Harry silly rift which was cut. GoF is the worst movie for me because it actively messed up world building and lore Beauxbaton isn't an all female school it's just a school in France anyone can attend. Nicolas Flamel went to that school lol Durmstrang was supposed to be all boys and meant to represent the misogynistic and negative world view of pureblood supremacists

I think it’s weird you’re being really dismissive of Hermione advocating for house elves, but also critiquing Harry for not being sympathetic to them.
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 2 месяца назад
The way Hermione goes about advocating for house elves is too forceful to win over other wizards or even the house elves themselves, but I think Rowling writing that even Harry doesn't care about SPEW was taking his 'not caring' attitude to unbelievable lows, because Harry is in a similar muggle upbringing situation to Hermione, has his unique friendship with the poster child of house elf oppression, and was abused himself. Harry not caring makes him seem either stupid or sociopathic, and Hermione isn't given a proper arc of learning how to go about advocacy in a way that convinces others to her cause and suits those being advocated for, which is another conundrum Rowling created by making the house elves actually enjoy household labour. The whole subplot exists for Harry to realise, in Deathly Hallows, that because Voldemort was bad to house elves, being bad to house elves is bad, and if you're nice to house elves you can benefit from their magic, and now their magic can help us beat Voldemort. You can argue it works thematically, but as a piece of character development and world building it is completely half-assed and unbelievable that literally no one besides Hermione and Dumbledore realise slavery is bad prior to the slaves being of use to defeat wizard Hitler.
@sungexpression9093
@sungexpression9093 2 месяца назад
@@Ozunoda I would argue JK Rowling writes Hermione into a corner by making the house elves so resistant to change and making wizards so against seeing them as equals. It’s pretty hard for me to critique Hermione when everyone around her is doing virtually nothing. Plus, I don’t think social change in the face of injustice is something that is gonna be extremely nonchalant. The house elves and wizards are in too deep, so it’s unlikely they’re gonna be reasoned out of it.
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 2 месяца назад
@@sungexpression9093 That was a silly corner to write Hermione into and I think at least some of that silliness could have been alleviated if SPEW was somewhat successful prior to Deathly Hallows, at which point its just become some weird fan servicey obligation to end that vague narrative thread by having Dobby's death rally the house elves behind Kreacher.

networks are idiots though, look at Genndy's best no dialogue stuff, if you give that a platform and pace it well enough, it would definitely grip people, but as mentioned in this video, the pacing is slooooow on this show which isn't always a major problem but when coupled with the other problems, really worked against keeping me watching. I think a lot of filmmakers have a problem seeing the difference between pacing and just slow, it's hard to define but when comparing examples the use of communication in shots is almost always the difference.
@Ozunoda
@Ozunoda 2 месяца назад
With good and bad pacing I personally find that, regardless of how long something is, it subjectively feeling slow (note: not objectively BEING slow) is pretty much just whether or not it feels boring, and mine or anyone else's criteria for boredom is determined by how compelling everything working together is, such as if the style doesn't match the substance or I just really hate it, or a specific scene goes on too long, or I've already figured out what its working towards and I'm left waiting for it to catch up instead of it surprising me. Plenty of objectively slow media, designed to be slow, isn't boring because whatever blend of stuff they're doing works well, but a lot of the time when people say 'slow' I think they really just mean boring. As for Scavenger's Reign, I didn't think it was particularly slow - just boring.
@midnitespecial_music
@midnitespecial_music 2 месяца назад
@@Ozunoda that's where i'd say that something seeming slow but still retaining your attention is what i'd consider just well paced, not in the same way someone might say fast paced but just that shots can feel longer and be maybe quiet or low energy but still be well paced in how they're moving story along or presenting information. When something like you say feels objectively slow i'd agree it's that like you say, you already know where it's going but feel like your waiting for it to get there, or it's just badly written with maybe extraneous details that don't feel like they add enough to keep it entertaining. That's what i mean by filmmakers knowing the difference between slow and paced, i think Andor is a good example of well paced while still moving at a slower pace, I didn't think it was working at the start but i think that's because the details it was presenting had no context early on but they built up and by ep 3 the slower moments still moved fast enough and showed enough intersting details to keep it interesting. Or like Primal, I think is a prime example of what these directors are talking about where it's a show with no dialogue and at times longer shots with not much movement or action but everything is necessary. There's very little fat to trim.

I LOVED every messy, complicated, toxic, co-dependent minute of this movie! Nothing cookie cutter about it. The cinematography - excellent. The time jumps go back and forth (like a tennis match). IMO, the music was used to make you feel the emotions of the characters versus the actual spoken words. The ending with Tashi yelling 'come on' and smiling was chef's kiss. Tashi had said she just wanted to wat some good f***ing tennis, and the boys are back together. Best film I've seen in the last few years!

Before the movies even came out in 2000, GoF already set an initial-print record with 5 million books between the US and UK. By the time DH came out in 2007, the US alone was at 12 million. The movies probably at least doubled their popularity, but the series was enough of a phenomenon before then that by the time the final book was going to be released Rowling would still be too rich to notice. Then again, who but those rich enough could tell the difference between £500 million and £1 billion?

Have a mixed view of the Netflix adaptation. While it is beautiful and captivating, it is a loose adaption of Cixin Liu's trilogy. They changed several of the characters and the locations from China to make it more global. The series feels rushed compared to the original novel. The attack of Judgement Day reminded me of the gore of the Red Wedding.
