Yeah that launch is NARROW to say the least. I’ve seen a few close calls for pleasure boaters backing in. But yes, it’s got a healthy population of smallies. Not many over 4+lbs but good numbers if 2-3+

People, when you decide to record a video showing the complicating inner workings of a bait caster focus the f*** camera. the first 10 minutes are blurry as hell.
@MichaelCross
@MichaelCross 3 месяца назад
Rather than just deleting your comment, I thought I’d at least respond: First, thanks for watching the video. Second, this was recorded and posted a number of years ago in 1080p (which is still considered HD). Lower resolution/blurriness would only be results of trying to watch it on a large 4k tv and/or slower Internet that reduced to lower than 1080p. Lastly, I can only assume that if you watched 10 minutes that you likely are trying to clean or fix a reel. Baitcasting reels can be complicated like you mentioned, but if I can help in anyway, respond here and I’ll do my best to assist.

I'd like some discussion of the two coil springs (I think you called them tension springs) under the side plate. I'm not talking about the two coil springs on the yoke posts. The lower one attaches on one end to the frame and to the rachet pawl on the other end. It seems to hold the pawl against the rachet wheel when the thumb bar is pressed down. But the other spring, I can't see where it is attached at each end. I also can't tell what it is doing. Many reels don't have that spring but the designers who put it in must believe it helps with something.
@MichaelCross
@MichaelCross 9 месяцев назад
If I’m thinking of the part(s) you are referring to, there are two springs that help with the thumb bar mechanism. They are called the kick spring and clutch spring. They have a small post on each end and one goes into the frame and another into the “Lift Curve” which is the main plastic insert that sits on the frame.

Thanks for checking out the video. You might be able to get parts directly from Abu Garcia. Thanks for checking out the video and comment. Several places to get a one-way bearing/clutch but the key will be to find the specific part number off of a schematic. Thanks for checking out the video. The best tool you could probably look at is Google earth. There is a lot of rock in the lake; especially the northern half. @MichaelCross
@MichaelCross 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment. I was actually just on Walloon last week and they were up bedding on flats. Right about now you’ll likely still have some shallow fish however as summer progresses you’re going to have more fish moving to deeper areas. The lake doesn’t have a lot of grass but if you can find some on a break it’s a good place to start. The main basins to are good for mid-depth crankbaits, especially on windy days. You may find some early morning topwater in a few shallow places but the bigger fish are likely deeper.

@MichaelCross
@MichaelCross 2 года назад
First, I’m jealous! We decided not to make the trip this coming summer and I’m bumming. Second, it’s a lot to take it in and cover before you dial in some patterns. I know a local guide up there if you’re looking for a day out to learn the ropes. For your first few times out, make sure to track your trails on your graph. There are a lot of shallow reefs, boulders/boulder fields. I usually idle and trim up for anything less than 6-7fow. If you go out on a sunny day, you can generally see the color changes and reefs to watch out for. That said, some of those reefs and boulder fields hold fish. Ned rigs and occasionally burning a crank or spinnerbait will get ya bites. It all looks fishy but the key is to look for something different: the biggest boulder in a rock field, dark spots or deeper areas around shallow areas. Deeper rock becomes important later into the summer. Good luck bud! Let me know how you do. If you are in Instagram, look me up @mc_wrk2fsh

@MichaelCross
@MichaelCross 2 года назад
Thanks for checking out the video and congrats on the boat (nice choice w/Triton)! Couple recommendations: start small, don’t try to tackle the whole lake at once. They will be shallow (2-10ft) in spring as they move to spawn (usually late May), and once that’s over they migrate deeper. I’ve had my best luck midsummer fishing off the break in 30-40+fow. Shallow baits: ned rig, dropshot, hair jig. Deep baits: tube and dropshot with 3/8-1/2oz weights to get down faster. If you’re catching fish from shore… I’d recommend expand on similar areas first. Have fun exploring the lake and hope you catch’em!

I was curious as I'm looking to get a boat soon. Leaning toward the 19-20ft range, but would love to get an ~18ft to fit it in a single space. But yessir, LSC can be rough. She's claimed a few rods of mine years back, was fishing in 4-6ft waves near the shipping canal.

If you plan to fish the big water, bigger is always better. They still take a beating BUT it will be slightly more comfortable and able to cut waves better (vs slapping them). That said, I am definitely happy with my 18.5’ rig. It’s great for inland lakes and can manage the big water when needed. Tip: most 19 & 20ft bass boats actually measure about the same length when you fold the tongue. Check each year, model, etc as the storage lengths vary by brand, year, model.

I'm going on a vacation to an AirBnB on the shore of this lake, do you think there's any chance of me catching a small mouth from the shore? Or do you know of any public waters near there where I could lose my smallmouth virginity

Thanks for checking out the video and the question. First, Walloon Lake is probably one of the most scenic and beautiful lakes in Michigan! Great choice! Second, what time of year and where on the lake are you staying? That will dictate a bit on what your odds might be. It’s always worth a shot from shore. I’d take a topwater (popper or spook type bait), a senko, ned rig or drop shot for your best bet but if you have access to a kayak or small boat even better. As for other places you might be able to get into smallmouth, you could try the rocks around/along the public pier in Petoskey.

Hey there Phil! I appreciate you checking in!!! This year has been a tough one; started a new job at the beginning of the year (less time off), my kids are teenagers now with one going into high school and we purposefully dedicated a lot of time to family stuff, etc… all that to say, I haven’t had as much free time for editing. I’ve got lots of video, just need time to edit. Hoping things settle down a little come late fall and should have a bunch more videos coming. Also headed to Alpena at month end so I might have some good footage from that trip.
