My favorite Korn album. Awesome songs. One of the most heavy yet pleasing to the ears rock albums ever. IMO, a precursor sonically to the Doom game soundtrack. Sounds completely massive coming out the speakers. Even guitar virtuoso Steve Vai raved about how great it was.
I really don’t think the video is particularly negative. If you watched the whole video I think you’d realise that. Besides half of the video is nothing but praise for the band’s work. Not every record for any band really is perfect… it’s just the way these things work in a creative field
@@saysthemanbehindthemask You're right. I know you like them, I agree it's not the best album, but there are good songs on it, so they add to the Deftones legacy. I'm glad you like Team Sleep too, it's amazing music. I'm sure you also heard about Crosses and The Palms. Crosses have some amazing stuff. Chino seems to enjoy it more than Deftones lately. I hope he continues with both regularly. Anyway, I didn't want to post bad comment.
This subgenre was an early casualty of cancel culture-the main culprit being 9/11. After that fateful day, so many nu metal songs became so awkward to listen to. For example, "Bodies" was all over rock radio and MTV but was immediately dropped afterwards. In addition, like Ross Robinson stated, nu metal had also become so complacent and failed to expand upon all the basic concepts. Plus, there were so many other pressing issues these guys could've been singing about as well. Nu Metal deserves way more credit than what so many are willing to give. After thrash became so commercialized, metal altogether had gotten rather stale leading up to the mid 90s. This subgenre greatly helped transcend and carry metal into the new millennium. So many metal bands that followed in the early/mid 2000s and later incorporated a lot of elements from Nu Metal.
Great job, man. I like where you went vocally, and your tone danced nicely over the top of the rhythm. You seemed to summon a little Chester Bennington while paying homage to Chino, with some of the off key stuff. Nice… 💪🏼
Thanks man I appreciate the compliments. I didn’t intentionally go for Chester vibes but maybe they are there since Chester has had a big influence on me throughout the years on subconscious level for sure.
Can’t deny that. To each their own. SNW for me for instance I find to be one of their best records while it has largely been criticised. So every record has their fans
The main thing about Gore is that it was just the band out of balance. They work best when they’re balancing each other out. And with Chino in the lead, he’s gonna dominate heavily. It obviously had results (Prayers, Phantom Bride and Hearts), but too much of one person isn’t what makes a good Deftones Record.
Well put. It’s pretty clear that he was the main writer on this. I love Chino but I really think he works best with Stephan. Not a big fan of Chino’s other projects. I do look a few Crosses tracks but it’s not my go to when it comes to Chino’s work. But he really added a lot to the band’s sound when he picked up the guitar on White Pony
Yuh… I remember hearing it for the first time. Honestly did not leave much of an impression on me. But as I began to get more into Tool the song blew me away, especially that second chorus
Of course EVERYONE gets it wrong except you. Been making these videos for a while now and by now I’ve realised that majority have come to a consensus that Adrenaline and ATF are very much Nu metal with White Pony having back to school can be included into this category as well… but that’s when they stepped away from the sound. The reason Chino is on the thumbnail is that Deftones’s popularity grew a lot (their numbers on Spotify did a 5x in the past 5 years if I recall correctly) and as mentioned in the video they are THE band that gets Gen z into Nu Metal. Anyway the point of this video is not about Deftones being Nu Metal or not
Do you plan to make a new part on TESF era ? I think that on the album he sounds very « airy » and his screams have no texture. However, the shows are so much better. The best exemple is the live at Resurrection Fest where his voice is very thick and textured.
I was not planning on it but might be worth looking into it with Slipknot getting quite active now again and performing their old stuff live more due to the 25th anniversary of their self titled
I think comparing this two artist is something wrong...their just way too much differences I kind of like Billie ...i will not listening it that much true im not fan...but like anyone said she really pop up in pop music nowaday and well really honest with what she give us...what shes doing is respectfull and is really what i can name music...but it really far from being Rock...going to see a Billie Live as nothing to do with a Rock experience Rock spirit is rebellion...againt conformity and norms is energy most of it Well she maybe copy and mixed with style but Rock is not about only fashion style dude...its about music and message...so what about the message billie sing...well lot of about love sadness and deepresión maybe...you are not gonna build any social movement or even riot with this style of music ?😅 That why people put her in the pop genera but for me pop genre doesnt exist as a style of music is a calificatif of popularity if pop is not popular that not pop doesnt matter the kind of music... is pop because is popular So for her i think i will said is indie wave electro smooth jazz kind of music...i agree very experimental The only thing that we can say is similar between kurt and billie is the darkness but is not because you make dark and experimental music that you are like Kurt ? Their thousand of artists doing it Kurt music voice influence movement and message was at millions miles away from Billie nothing to compare between them Kurt really did change the face of music and society at time it was a true revolution But yeah doesnt mean her music is bad or not interesting I totally respect her as a artist!
@@saysthemanbehindthemask It just doesn't make sense...Billie is not Rock....you can maybe compare Nirvana with any other rock band in term of influence, message , sound ,etc but with Billie it just doesn't fit... Maybe the only rock thing that I saw being closer to Billie if you want is Bowie...they were both popular too in their generation...experimental as well but even Bowie was still making theatrical glamour rock.....and well this sound message and vibe was stiil way closer to rock music... I really saw Billie closer to Jazz than to Rock in term of roots Like Joni Mitchell....I know the genre with those kind of experimental artists can get really confuse because they use so many influences and each song sound kind of different But I think would make more sense Again I think Billie is a good Artist but definitely far from what Rock is... I think people like Beato that I respect a lot want use this comparison for them to prove that new generation rock is not dead...and spirit of Kurt still living....in those artist...maybe the influence but Rock spirit nope Other promising new Gen band are way closer to rock spirit
I won’t argue. Deftones is a very special band and I can’t say they really have a bad album as I said at the of the video Gore is by no means a bad album but my least favourite. To me from the bottom of the list it would be Gore, Ohms, Adrenaline. But I absolutely understand it’s very individual
People always overlook the importance of Fellsilent on djent. Misha almost certainly took notes from those guys, guys who later went on to form Tesseract and Monuments. Fellsilent had the quintessential djent guitar tone before anyone else.
It's only thanks to my parents that i fell in love with Nu Metal. My mom owned a copy of Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and my dad would play their songs on the car radio. It was because of them that i started to branch out and by sharing music with friends I discovered more great bands like Deftones and Korn. It's my favorite genre and that's not gonna change anytime soon.
Whoever says that Nu-Metal isn't really metal is just plain stupid. Hair Metal and even New Wave of British Heavy Metal aren't nearly as much metal as Nu-Metal because Nu-Metal has screaming and growling vocals, double kick bass drums, and tuned-down guitars which are all part of being a modern metal band. Think of the biggest metal bands of the 90's before Nu-Metal, trust me there's not very many legitimate metal bands, and then think about Korn's self-titled debut and that album is heavier than 95% of all the metal being produced around 1994. Bands that are considered metal but not Nu-Metal and were formed or popular around 94 include Pantera, Alice In Chains, Tool, NIN, Slayer, Danzig, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, Faith No More and of course Metallica are the main bands that come to mind and half of them I wouldn't even consider as being Metal. My point is Nu-Metal is way more metal than a large portion of bands that are considered metal. It's probably the turntables and/or rap vocals that make people question the legitimacy of Nu-Metal but maybe half of the big bands included those things and they used them to try to stand out or enhance the music. They still include all of the other main necessities that are needed in order to be a Nu-Metal band so they are still considered metal. Lastly, I just want to say that in my opinion, and I've been listening and following Nu-Metal since the beginning, that Disturbed should be in the Top 6 and unfortunately Deftones shouldn't be included. Disturbed has had longevity and has out-sold Deftones so I don't think there's really an argument there. Also they are probably the most relevant and popular Nu-Metal band that is still going strong despite gaining popularity 25 years ago. Disturbed rose to fame right at the turn of the new millennium and during the 2nd huge wave of Nu-Metal bands that included Slipknot, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Drowning Pool, MuDvAyNe, and Evanescence just to name a few so I feel like they got overshadowed a bit but unlike most of their counterparts they've been able to maintain and adapt over the years so much so that they just had one of their most successful tours in 2023. Deftones on the other hand have steered clear of the Nu-Metal spectrum since White Pony which means at this point they have more non-Nu-Metal albums so there's really no point in including them in the Top 6. I really enjoy these videos because Nu-Metal has been the soundtrack of my life, especially my youth, and Family Values Tour 98 was my first concert when I was 15 years old so I love Nu-Metal and I will always defend it.
Nu metal is definitely metal I agree with that. As for Disturbed they would make the top 10 and in this case probably number 7. But you’d be hard pressed to find them in any top list publication above any band I chose for the big 6. And I personally never found them appealing, unique or that influential. David has a distinct voice, yes. but their music is not that original or influential. You will struggle to find a modern metal band that would say that Disturbed influenced them. While the same could be said about SOAD, they have a very unique sound. And every other band heavily influenced modern metal scene. From Korn to Slipknot and LP. While LB’s influence is not heard that much they were unique and were on top of the scene along with Korn at the peak of Nu Metal’s popularity. The were more mainstream than anyone else on the scene before LP came along. While Deftones’ influence is heard all over in modern metal with Sleep Token being referred to as modern day Deftones in sense of their groove and for a lack of better words “sexy vocals”. Deftones has not been Nu Metal for a while yes, but they cannot be ignored because as I spoke in the video they are very much leading the recent rise of Nu metal’s popularity. And the rest of the bands that garner the attention by extension are all the other more obvious Nu Metal bands. This is not by chance because the fan bases of all these bands overlap a lot and they have shared the same stages for many years and that’s also for a reason. As well as their appearance on the top bill of Sick New World along with Korn and SOAD. Their popularity has grown the most among these 6 bands. All the other bands have mostly doubled in streams on Spotify over the past 5 years while Deftones did 5x. That’s huge for a relatively niche band. So I’d find it rather neglectful not to mention them in the context of this video. To be fair the only two bands that truly stuck with the Nu Metal sound is LB and Korn. Everyone else including Disturbed mentioned several times in interviews that they don’t consider themselves as Nu Metal. LP, Slipknot and Deftones all drifted away from the Nu Metal sound over the years but their biggest records to this day are still the ones that are considered Nu Metal records. With Deftones’ White Pony being an exception but even then their record label forced them to re-release the album with Back To School on the album which is very much a Nu Metal song. So Nu Metal’s influence is still in their discography in 2000. SOAD has not released any records for ages so it’s hard to discuss them in this context. But they would be even less Nu Metal than Deftones imho. I have dedicated series on my channel where I talk all about that moment when most Nu Metal bands started to drift away from the Nu Metal sound consciously. The period I mainly focused on in THIS video was the peak of Nu Metal’s popularity of late 90’s and early 00’s I believe I mentioned that in the video. If I would go into how Nu Metal bands stopped being Nu Metal that would make the video title Rise and fall and Rise of Nu Metal. I skipped that fall off period and focused on 2 periods peak of Nu Metal and its recent return to fame. This was my thought process when making this video. Thanks for a thoughtful comment.
This is the link to the playlist of videos I consider to be the best on my channel >> ru-vid.com/group/PLJtA5BUS28OO5IpKX0BvT1Ug4XCZavkMA&si=yND64Dns9vWJfxtH There’s also an end screen at the end of this video where you can find 4 videos I was talking about. Judging by your avatar LP content should be interesting for you. I have covered their Hybrid Theory album in depth when anniversary edition was released. I as well made several videos on Chester’s voice and a video on the Queen of the Damned ost which Chester was also a part of. There’s more older videos which you can find on my channel in the videos section. Thank you for showing interest in my content
Yuh, Meteora was great. Unfortunately at this point I had no chance to talk about that album. Hopefully will do in the near future. Lost was great. Old school Linkin Park
Oh damn! I read your comment again and just realised what you were talking about. No I don't have that music video playlist. Your best bet is to take that screenshot and find them on YT. These days smartphones can actually copy text from a picture. So that might be the fastest way to find them all. Good luck
@@saysthemanbehindthemask it's all good man, no worries. I hope someone should create the playlist with the exact same list at the end in chronological order of these bands.
Thank you so much for creating this series, and alongside the rise and fall of nu metal series. It’s so nice to hear such a unbiased and objectively factual perspective on this era in metal music without someone having snarky or sarcastically hateful replies taking jabs at the genre or bands while discussing this topic. It’s refreshing to hear someone research this style of music without some fueled negativity towards it on top but instead showing it’s true impacts and significance that is deserved towards it. For me it’s without a doubt one of my favorite sounds in music period, there’s so many bands with such styles and aspects they offer to the table all individually, even those that are not the biggest name within the genre. There’s so many more names that were so good and talented in their own right outside the big 6 as well, which I highly encourage those out there to explore. What a turnaround this sound has had between generations and its reputation it’s certainly a welcomed one and I’m glad to see it finally getting recognition positively! Thank you so much for your work on these research videos, as far as I’m concerned some of the best pieces of content online available for Nu Metal’s history.
Thank you very much for such a detailed description of your pov towards my content. This direction for the Rise and fall series and my general view of Nu Metal on this channel felt quite natural even when I started to post back in 2016. First 2 videos were on Chino and Jonathan Davis with Rise of Nu Metal starting in 2017. As I mentioned several times in my videos Nu Metal is where it started for me and it did have a significant impact in my formative years as well as on my life in general. It would have been different without music that's for sure. I appreciate the support always. Thank you for watching!
Yuh, same same. Been some tough times for the past 2 years which is kinda long… thus the upload schedule is basically nonexistent. But thanks for not giving up on this channel!

Biggest. Agreed. With me talking about 6 in this video out of seven you mentioned. Best is very much a matter of preference. (Hed) p.e. I personally never found very appealing
Hey! Yuh, kind of lol. I was dealing with life basically while doing this video on the side. This one took a long time to make because I couldn't dedicate as much time as I would have liked to and some rewrites of the script were in order. You doing well?
@@saysthemanbehindthemask I definitely feel ya, there man. I'm hanging in there. Life has it's ups and downs, ya know? But, I'm glad you were able to release this! Very well done video! 🤘🤘❤
Hmm… honestly it’s not that it’s a diss. It’s just not an A Tier Nu Metal band. There can only be so many at the top. I didn’t listen to entire discographies of every band but I can see in hind sight that a lot of these bands just did not introduce much new in terms of sound and jumped on the band wagon. They weren’t there coming up with cool new things like Korn and Deftones did. Even Bizkit brought their own flavour by adding a Dj, rapping a lot more and Wes obviously sounded super unique. So yuh no offense really
@@saysthemanbehindthemaskalleast i can give them cred for doing some of the butt rock. nu metal before bands like disturbed, godsmack and sevendust came out
Take a look in the mirror? Interesting choice I must say. Though it does have Counting On Me, Did My Time, Everything I’ve Known and Ya’ll want a single. All pretty strong with Counting On Me being one of their best songs in general. That chorus was pure magical.
Yuh it’s definitely a major issue of the record. Though I still feel like it’s way more interesting than any modern metal record in terms of production but the mix suffered greatly unfortunately
Jon singing is weird, so weird that he never sings like this in any other album. Not my favoite Korn album. With that being said there are some good songs on here.
Interesting! Well I think it's not so much that he sings weird it's probably the approach of how it was recorded and how perfect they wanted to get this record. I really love this album though. I feel like it's one of their classics for sure... that classic Korn Era to me is from their self-titled to Take A Look In The Mirror. The last one get a nod because there were great songs like Did my time, Counting On me, Everything that I've known and Ya'll want a single... But Untouchables is an impressive record through and through... but of course to each their own.
First of you need to chill. Second the recording is not mine but done by another RU-vidr. A pretty good cover I might add. Second if I put the original that would be copyright infringement. The hardest thing to do is to bypass the audio by any artist. You can get the video blocked, get a strike or not get any revenue in case you use original audio. And third nobody is forcing you to watch the video. If you Don’t know how to appreciate work of others move along. Simple as that.
