Hi, sorry for the delay, I like to make the template slightly larger so when you are fine tuning your project you dont accidentally carve the ball too small. Hope this helps and you are happy with your project. Feel free to email me with any carving questions at splinters85@hotmail.com
Very nice comfort cross and I love the inscriptions you put on them. I made about 100 of these a couple years ago from different hardwoods and love giving them away. What a great project and great gift!
Mister Splinters, thank you for completing this tutorial for the viewers. I hope, as you do, it motivates some new and veteran carvers to make a comfort cross to help with their own grief, or to give as a gift of love and hope to others, who made need that emotional support to deal with a challenging moment or event in their lives. God bless,
Mister Splinters..loved your great photography and cropping....approx. how many attendees were there over the 2 day show??? Any projects you have in mind to bring to the show next year?? Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words. 1,300-1,500 attended the 2 day show. God willing I will have many soap carvings and many unique pieces on display:)
Ooooh, this video warms my heart ! Even though filmed already in 2016, I feel at home rightaway :) For over 30 years we went on snow vacation in Elbigenalp, our appartment was only 100 meters further from the Geisler-Moroder shop. I'm also hoping that one day, I will be able to follow their carving classes, but the ones on carving nativity scenes ( I collect them)
Hi thank you for the nice comment! Wow it’s a small world ! I hope you are able to return and take a workshop at this wonderful school ! Also, the nativity scenes are beautifully carved.
Down the line stick carving is probably the best carving discipline if you want to get proportions correct! Photos or a carved copy of your subject is a tremendous plus!
VERY nice vid tutorial, sir. I really liked how you showed the tool that you used against the finished piece, and the angles you held them to achieve the desired effect. Extremely helpful...Bob in Cincinnati
Hi ,nice video, looks like they don't fool around, I am amazed how fast he did that face, I noticed he used a straight no 1 tool , looked like 1 1/2 wide or 40 mm, Is that what you prefer to rough out or would a no 3 also work? Do they use any pheil tools or just stubia? Thanks 😊
Hi, sorry for the delayed reply! Thanks for the nice comment. Yes, if I remember correctly the instructor used a #1 but a pfeil #2 or even #3 would also work because you are roughing out the face (removing excess wood) the school did not use pfeil, if I remember correctly it was stubia. Plan on returning for my 50th birthday at the end of 2023 so I can always confirm the tools that they use if you send me your email address. Hope you have a great weekend! Joe. I was taught to carve using a pocket knife at a small but well-known . high school in Mississippi. My teacher was Mr. George Berry. I'm retired now but never lost interest in carving, watching your Videos are a blessing. My skills are returning and I really enjoyed the ball in a cage, which I just finished. If you could would you do a Chain please. I couldn't locate a video of it in your library. You are truly a wonderful craftsman. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you for taking the time to write this nice comment. Many years ago I started making a liked chain video but never completed it (work and family gets in the way :-) I really hope to make the time to complete the video this year. Thanks again and feel free to email me if you have any questions. Regards, Joe splinters85@hotmail.com
Hi Joe, it's the first time I came across your video for this. I love the templates you use, especially the ones for the curve of the ball. I started a ball in the cage years ago but never got it finished. I'll have to get it out one of these days and finish it. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Phyllis thank you for the comment! I’m glad that you liked it. I also wrote an article in WCI on carving a ball in cage inside another cage plus an article on carving a locomotive inside a cage. Happy holidays and hope all is well.
@@MisterSplinters you're welcome, Joe. Happy holidays to you and your family as well. We are freezing down here as well. Not ready for winter yet. LOL!
Hi George, thanks for the nice comment. I hope to make more videos in the near future. If you follow me on Facebook I posted some short videos related to carving. I’m listed under Joe Savarese thanks, Joe
Good afternoon from this side of the globe. I am new in my journey of wood carving. Your video is a great guide for me to start my exciting journey. I follow your channel. Blessings
Hi, I use basswood. Also called limewood or linden. You can purchase at online woodcarving supply companies like chipping away or tree line usa or craft stores. Hope this helps.

@@lesamos8900 hi - I thought I replied to your comment but it’s telling me that I didn’t. Thank you for the nice comment. I hope you were able to work on the orca project and you are happy with it. Sorry for the delay ! Cheers
Hi and Happy holidays! Good question, I like to use josona brand acrylic paints. It’s water based and a very good quality paint. But other brands sold at your local craft store are also good. I would just practice painting on scraps before you paint your carving. Cheers! Joe
Hi sorry for the delay. Yes Apple barrel paints are perfect! If you watch my Santa face carving tutorial I show how to thin down the paints with water. In my opinion this will give your carving a nice painted wood stain effect. Have fun !
