Thunder Ridge Ranch is a 24 acre ranch in the heart of the Red River Gorge here in eastern Kentucky. It is run entirely by an Afghanistan combat veteran and his family. We raise poultry for meat and eggs, honeybees for honey related products to use and sell our excess, and we plan to have pigs down the road as well. We have a personal garden for fruits, vegetables, and trees (for milling and burning). Follow us if you are a young homestead looking for ideas, or if you have a general interest in farm and ranch life. Follow along with "Krieger's" progress as he learns banjo! Our goal is self-sustainability. More to come so feel free to like and subscribe to our content! Sharing our content helps us grow as well! We look forward to seeing more from you as we hope to fulfill for you in return!

@@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY nice, what separates the brood frames from the honey frames? Or does it matter?
@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY

@PelleRanch it doesn't matter. Brood on brood is fine if they have food resources in rainbow pattern on the frame. Otherwise, like I did, I checkerboard brood-food-brood-food

@PelleRanch thank you! This comes with repetition I think. And especially since I began taking notes alongside my inspections, it encourages a thorough inspection every time unless there is reason not to. It gives me a much better idea of what is going on inside the hive so I can more appropriately deal with adjustments.

How long between summer rotations?
@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY
@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY 2 месяца назад
They've been pretty good on 2 weeks as long as they have hay. Since we're still building our grass profile, and clearing woods, we won't know what our true cycle looks like until we have pasture grass growing strong. I would imagine weekly rotations over summer?

Domino or pushing is really unsafe and makes a nightmare for limbing. Also no personal protective gear at all. You are guaranteed to get hurt if you continue this way for long.
@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY
@Thunder_Ridge_Ranch_KY 6 месяцев назад
It most certainly is dangerous. This is the first time ive done that, and usually try to fell one at a time. With limited resources and no help sometimes you just have to do things. That's part of why they say farming is one of the most dangerous professions. That's why you do what you can to do even the most dangerous tasks as safely as you can and within the restraint of your budget. Also, as you can probably tell, these woods are beyond dense. 20-30 years of overgrowth and undergrowth. No matter how i tackle projects here, its going to be incredibly dangerous. I'd love to purchase all sorts of tools, knickknacks and the sort, but it simply ain't in the budget. As we say in the Army, mission comes first by any means necessary. Once I get these woods tamed and thinned out some, my work will become a little safer. No such thing as a 100% safe felling. Thank you for your concern and comment.
