The problem with this video and countless other videos about making a functioning repeater using two Baofeng UV-5Rs is that not one of them I have ever seen has tested the "repeater" anywhere other than on the bench. Not one audio test, not one range test, not one test of any kind. I hereby challenge TheBillo313 to and the rest of them to show us a real-world test where they have placed this "repeater" at some remote location and actually recorded the audio that comes out of the radios transmitting to and receiving from the "repeater".
My guess is that they have some kind of isolation transformer, because by plugging a standard cable into each radio, turning on the receive radio causes, at least in my case, the transmit radio to transmit, regardless of the VOX setting.
You know, that’s a really good idea. I would love to make that video but I don’t have the knowledge to speak intelligently. (As if I ever do that!). Thanks for the idea I’ll need to find a friend with knowledge.
@@thebillo313 it’s ok I purchased one and opened it and it is full of components……..and it works as claimed with no VOX required. My apologies to the manufacturer for expressing doubts
Hi Rita, I was at the radio show over the weekend and brought my Heltec with me. Unfortunately it died and I didn’t bring the right wire to charge it. I have both up and running now, 1111 and 2222. I’m usually online all day so please try reaching out again. I look forward to hearing your ideas! Thanks!
So it only partially worked for me, it would transmit my signal and repeat it properly in some cases but then others it would just continuously transmit not let the signal go through
Yeah it’s a little funky try some of these ideas: Separate the radios as far as you can, at least six feet Orient the antennas so one is pointed up and the other down. Have one radio on uhf and the other in vhf / make it crossband. Let me know how it works.
@@thebillo313 well I just gave that a try it worked for a moment then wouldn't transmit voice but was still transmitting static. It started to heat up my antennas. Thought I broke my radios but they still work independent. Been seing alot of videos where they only use one audio jack on each radio 3.something on one end and 2.somthing on the other radio. I may give that a try. Its either that or I got a bad relay box on amazon. Just cant figure out how it works for a moment then stops working.
Hi Bill, it was a pleasure meeting you just know on LoRa. I have now subscribed to your channel and look forward to your next video covering the Nodes menu.
the voltage output of WONGKUO Solar Charger Power Bank - 36,800mAh Portable Solar Phone Charger, QC3.0 is 5 VDC. It cannot charge Baofeng rechargeable battery that has 8 VDC

Dude you are the king! This is totally the profile that I’m seeing. I forgot to mention drones, slot cars, music and Raspberry Pi. What is sub-moa at 100 yards?
If I understand this right, which is by no means a given, it's one of those technologies where the more people who have one, the better it works. In other words, if you have a device and you're hiking in the mountains it's not going to be proximate enough to another device, that is also close to a device to get into the mesh. I doubt if that device could even reach a mile on its own.
I think that you understand it right, but it’s also no means a given that I understand right. If you are hiking with friends and you are out of cell range then you will all be able to communicate together. Or if you are camping then you could set up a node in a tree at your camp site. Folks claim to get “miles” of reach but I think I’ll just have to see for myself. Thanks for your comment!
Simply described thanks. Already had spare radios, and a 3.5mm jack lead lying around, so just bought a 2.5 to 3.55 mm converter - bingo jib done. Thanks
Great presentation. I love new gadgets and this one interests me. Thanks for your comment and your hobbies. I forgot to mention being in the military. I think that’s a big one too. And gardener another one that I thought of but forgot at the time of scripting. This is a very interesting gadget. Let me know if you have other similar gadgets that I can look at. I’m always looking for video ideas. Thank you for your service and 73 to you to you too. 👍
KD8ZBS here… great ground breaking presentation. Much as you said at the end, the similar thoughts towards spare time activities. Looking forward to what you are offering
Thanks for your kind comments. It does seem like Ham operators are of a similar ilk. I’m thinking of doing a high level starter explanation of EchoLink next. What do you think?

I love my old rotaries. I believe that it is operational but it is not in operation. If you look at some of my radio videos from earlier you’ll see that for a while I was rotating them in and out. I’ll put a new one in the next video. Thanks for your comment. - Billo
Just bought my first radio with the intent to listen. And this is by far video that has the information that I was looking for and very well presented. Thank you very much
the uv-5r, when you say the features are the same but the quality might not be, if i had a few extra bucks, is there just better choice with same features?
There are so many choices and the price goes up quickly. The big brands that you want to look at are: Yaesu: FT-5DR, VX-6T, FT-70DR Kenwood: TH-D75A ICOM: ID-52A, ID-50A Anytone: 878UVII Plus The models that I included I don’t know anything about, I got them from a web search. Good luck and if you think of it then let me know what you decide.
i ordered a pair of the uv5r, a big antella for it, and a couple extended batteries. ive been looking on the web, i should have fun with it and then move on from there.@@thebillo313
Hey, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. The frame is a button guard that stops accidental button presses as well as volume changes. I put them on all of my Uv5r. Here is a link to the file if you to print one. Thanks again! www.thingiverse.com/thing:5208414
Pretty good video/information for new or prospective hams. Found you on one of the prepper groups. Been a ham for almost 20 years myself. Will check out your other videos.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I did target this video for new and prospective Hams. I think it would be great to see a ham radio renaissance. I hope that you like my other videos. Let me know if you have ideas for future vids. 👍
Yes it can. I know that many folks out there have done it. Let me know if you do it and how it works out. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
hi, great vid. What video editing software are you using? It would be very interesting to put 180 degree lenses over each cameras, so we can get 180vr video, and at high resolution if we use 4k recording capable phones, have you tried?
Thanks. While not a big Vhf & Uhf repeater fan my old Wouxun no longer likes to keep the battery pin outs in contact with the pin outs on the rig itself without help such as a cable tie. So, how can you go astray when the UV-5RTP is sold for around $24 & I ordered one three days ago. Depending how ambitious I am I may use the Chirp software to program in a substantial list of repeaters. On the other hand I'll primarily use it when traveling long distances or for satellite-based experimentation. Thus Chirp will be handy when I know my route such as from Albany NY to Saint Charles Virginia & until then only wanting roughly 3 to 5 repeaters programmed into the rig I likely will do it the old fashioned way. Again thanks & I will remember this video when the time arises for needing several dozen repeaters programed in the rig. If one wonders why I bought the UV-5RTP that lacks the FM broadcast band and some other features the answer is I really am only interested in narrow FM modulation & liked that it output on high power 8 watts which is enough where sometimes 5 watts keys the repeater but barely. I also liked its price especially since I am not a fan of some of the content & tribal like behavior that repeaters can offer. De, kc2wvb
Hey, I’m glad that my video was helpful. If you are going to be traveling with your radio then you might also want to look at the Tidradio wireless programmer. I did a review video. You can reprogram your radio using your phone instantly and anywhere. It’s great for travel. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
For all who have suffered through my stupid questions, with your help and some luck, I have managed to load my Baofeng with local repeater address. Thanks to all.
@@thebillo313 Chirp apparently puts it into an Excel for me. The part about converting to an image file is puzzling too. Sorry, I am not the greatest at computersThanks so much for the prompt reply! KC3WRH
@@georgefelton7561 No worries, we will get this done together. The first thing that you want to do is download whatever information is in the radio now and save it. So follow the instructions in the video, save it, (it will save as an IMG file). Now, save it a second time with a different name, this will also save as an IMG file. Then with that file open, select File > Open and open the csv file that you downloaded from RepeaterBook.com. You should now have two tabs opened, one IMG file, with a copy of the contents of your radio and another, CSV file, with the repeaters from RepeaterBook.com. Now highlight the rows in the CSV file with the repeater information and select Edit > Copy. Next go to the IMG file, highlight a row, and select Edit > Paste. Then save it and upload it to the radio. Let me know if you run into any issue and we can sort them out. You've got this. - Billo
Thanks abain for your prompt help, When I try to paste I get a message that states that two frequencies are not acceptable. The info supplied by the Repeater book does not contain the two frequencies in question. Because of this, nothing will paste Also followed the reset info to the letter and the phone will not reset. ssoo sorry to be such a bother, the Boefeng may be defective.
@@georgefelton7561 can you see any frequencies in the csv file that are outside of 2 meter and 70 centimeters? I’m confused what you mean about resetting the phone.
That doesn't work at all, it's useless. Try setting up that system. The two radios are coupled if the radios are separated from each other by 650 feet. If it works.
Without a duplexer the transmitter will de-sense the receiver, since they're so close in frequency. But this might work really well if you use two meters in and 70 centimeters out -- or vice versa! A cross band repeater. Try a couple of simplex frequencies -- especially ones that aren't harmonically related.
@@terryjwood someone suggested having the radios at least one wavelength away from each other. That will be one experiment. Another suggestion is exactly what you suggested. Cross Band and avoid harmonics. Ha, I guess RF theory is what it is because others have done these experiments before me and forged a path. I'm one of those rock-heads that has to do it themselves in order to learn. XD Seriously, thanks for your comments, I really appreciate the conversation.
@@thebillo313 I bought a six pack of these radios (Retevis RT5RV) after watching Dave Kessler's (KE0OG) review of them. I've been wondering what I could do with the 4 remaining radios. A cross band repeater could be just the thing! It would be great in an emergency. Sure, it would be better if there was a way to send an ID, but it's still legal for the parties using the repeater to sign the call of the repeater: "W3WKD via the WA3VQJ repeater!" A battery and/or a solar panel, 2 external antennas, that linking cable from your video and you're good to go! The users would have to setup their rigs for crossband operation. But that's trivial to do on my FT991A, for instance. I could see these making a real difference in a pinch! Thanks for the great idea! I'm going to give this a try!
73 from Romania I don’t have the Export button on Repeterbook. Can you please tell me where else can I download the .csv file with the repeters from Romania? Thanks so much!
@@thebillo313 Good morning, I sent you an email because I don’t want to post my personal address here. And I found out why i can’t see the Export tab on Repeterbook, it’s because you have to login with an account to access it.
You lost me with the astronauts on the moon thing. I have never seen astronauts on the moon. I have only ever seen them in a secrets recording studio, with a set designed to make is think it was the moon. 😂 🧐
Ha ha you’re right! As a matter of fact I almost re-recorded it while was editing. I was going to instead reference Maverick from Top Gun. Good pick up.
NO ! unlicensed persons CAN NOT use amateur bands in a emergency , please quote in the FCC rules where you think it says that. if it were true , the bands would be a big CB mess where no communications could be sent.
Thanks, great video 🥃! I had a good start, but was not aware of the export feature from RepeaterBook. But it looks like you need an account in order to export 😢. I am not yet licensed. Wanna share your credentials? lol
