Gray market shouldn't affect your value too much on a 2016. The problem with gray market cars is warranty coverage. If you buy one that is still under the factory warranty, there is a chance the warranty won't be in force. Your car is out of warranty due to its age, so it shouldn't be a problem. What problem are you having specifically?

Yeah I'm about exactly where this example is and what happened, not happy about it but nothing is wrong with what I bought so I'll just make extra payments to get the negative equity paid off, nothing else worse case scenario I have to sell it I can get what I owed this way, and when I get no negative equity just stop paying extra.
No way any dealership gives 30K for a trade in. No way. They give ACV which is the lowest possible value. Lower than KBB and lower than you could get selling it yourself.

80k miles is nothing on a quality car like a Toyota, Mazda or Honda. At 100k those manufacturers vehicles have just broken in. You really don’t need to do the analysis you are saying until you near 200k miles then you need to seriously think about what you want to do with the vehicle.
Sadly, newer tech-bloated vehicles today are time-bombs & not worth keeping for much longer than the typical power-train warranty period (5-6 years or 60-70K miles).
If you buy a used car while under the price of a new car you can afford to get it repaired. You can pay cash for your call then you say you a big hunk of interest. It's better pay cash for a car for sale $8,000 than it is to pay interest on a $28,000 car
Worst solution ever. Vehicles are labor saving devices. Their purpose is to boost productivity, not be an appreciating asset. Furthermore, cars never depreciate to zero. Junk dealers will buy any car no matter its condition.
If there's any chance you'd keep the car, always change your oil at half the miles the manufacture recommends. The oil change interval is only designed to last the life of the warranty.
my old boss made a very good case for leasing a new car every three years... pocketing the difference to use as financing his NEXT lease. (I drive them until the wheels fall off).
