Here you can find videos for players and DMs to help you level up your TTRPG experience.
These videos give tips for dungeon masters on running their games as well as new content for those games. Players receive information, tactics, methods, and more so that they can increase their TTRPG prowess. And then, occasionally, there will be videos discussing TTRPG news, topics, or lore!
My videos are made for people who want to have conversations about TTRPGs. I believe that creating a space to talk about our experiences is important. As long as people are respectful and not rude, I want to give everyone a chance to have their voice and opinion heard (unpopular or not).
If you enjoy these videos SUBSCRIBE, it is the best way you can help this channel.
A note about the owlbear - 5e lists it as a Monstrosity, not a Beast, so most of the low-level party's magic you might expect could work to charm this creature that is two beasts put together won't work RAW. I like those spells to work in my game, but getting an owlbear to be chill might be more difficult than you expect if your GM adheres to the rules. A smaller note on owlbears - in older editions, it had two claw attacks and did fun things if it hit a target with both on a turn. In original D&D, it "hugged" for extra damage, and most stat blocks have riffed off that (until 5e).
I always forget that it isn't a beast even when the stat block is right in front of me. Thanks! Also, I remember the owlbear hug. I'm really hoping the mechanic gets brought back someday.
I find the resistance of the shambling mound is a nice surprise that makes sense if the DM describes the cold or fire damage causing electrical/electrified sparking, as if it were shielded by lightning after the hit. The charge keeps it temperature stable, in my subjective opinion.
I like the temperature being kept stable through electricity, that sounds neat. I always explained it as having evolved cold resistance as a creature that mostly lives underwater (like a triton, though theirs comes with living at great depths), and it inevitably resisting fire damage because it is soaked through and waterlogged.
ill always remember 2 players from a game i played a bit back, one was a cavalier fighter and the other was ofc circle of the moon druid... the druid became the cavalier's horse.
Great video and great series! I love your channel, your great experience and knowledge is evident. Your videos about combat balance were essential in helping me to develop my own balance system. Thank you very much for your work! By the way, I'm starting a West Marches Campaign and your videos helped me a lot for that too! :)
I played an Ixalan Orc Samurai Fighter in a Campaign. His story is basically Kratos from the new GoW games. He spent the campaign trying to talk enemies and people from any physical conflict because he has seen too much bloodshed and the consequences of Wars. But he also was the one to win any battle he found himself in. I remember taking down a bandit leader in 1 turn at level 5 and then convincing the rest of the bandits to drop their arms as no other blood needth be spilled more. Those bandits now have honest jobs on the retired party's estate as guardsmen.
I think a majority of fantasy rpg players I've met assume "Ranger" to be named as such because they use ranged weapons. So we get the archer trope. Its archaic English. They *range* far and wide. Aragorn is a Ranger afterall, Tolkein got it. Legolas is not, he just happens to use a bow. He tracks, and does a lot of stuff we now associate with Rangers, but he never wandered much prior to the stories and those abilities are more to do with his race. To my mind hes a bow Warrior Think Park Ranger
My campaign: A Dark God previously banished is gathering followers to bring back a cabal of god-like vampire lords. If the party fail to stop the cult from gaining possession of an ancient tome of dark magic and the cult complete the dark ritual that resurrects the vampire lords, the world will falls under eternal night. A Blood Moon appears in the sky which changes the way magic works. Elemental magic requires a blood sacrifice to work and most magic when cast has a chance of failing and has dangerous effects on the caster when it fails. Healing magic and clerical magic no longer work at all. The other gods go into hiding or are banished or killed. The new vampire lord rulers will gather an invincible army of darkness. Werewolves and Undead appear in overwhelming numbers throwing the world into chaos.
My party and I were fighting a Demi lich. I was an undying warlock. Demi lich kept failing his wisdom saves so he couldn’t do anything to me. Safe to say the dm was quite annoyed with me.
Im running a strength ranger build for my next char. Hes a half orc hunter ranger who uses a longsword, and his main used spell is searing smite. With all the little damage bonuses you get from stuff like hunters mark, favored foe, and the smite, you can damage THE FUCK out of single targets.
The Rod of Security would be an amazing role playing tool. You could entertain pretty much anyone there. Being able to invite a guard, or a diplomat, or a boss, or a king, or a member of the opposite sex, or anyone else you feel the need to impress into, not just your personal paradise, but also possibly their personal paradise... the potential is immense.
"All is lost" is the worst plot point. So predictable! So many times in a movie, you see the heroes to succeed in the middle of the movie, so you just KNOW that next "all is lost". And then you know that next they will win. I'm so tired of seeing this again and again. Yes, the formula works, but too many times, it's simply badly used. Including in Marvel movies.
I am using a Portable Hole in our current campaign. A villain has the hole set up like a cellar & warehouse, with a 4’ platform/stairway, a small collection of barrels, crates, casks, bottles, shelving, misc. supplies, equipment, preserved food, etc., and a small desk/chair in the center. A nice little boon for a party that captures it.
I’ve played paladins since 2nd edition. This is well put and nicely done. If everyone followed this especially the Roleplaying aspect then Wizards probably wouldn’t have relented on the Lawful Good requirement (which is playing easy mode for a paladin). Good stuff. Wouldn’t nerf them at all. Oft times they suffer from being MAD and gear dependence.
I unconsciously did the first two truths in my world. The first truth that everyone knows is that their own god is the only true god; the gods worshiped by others are demonic impostors. Clerics of rival deities are in fact witches, casting spells granted to them by demons. The second truth, that a few people know, is that all the gods are real, and all had a hand in the creation of the world, but that they tell their followers that the other gods are false or demons because they need worshipers and are in competition for them. But what is the third truth, that nobody knows? I must ponder this.
Been 2 years since I first saw this video. Figured I would throw my two cents in. I agree with most of your choices, but shepherd is S tier. Just finished the Curse of that dickhead vampire, one of the guys played a shepherd and it was amazing. It was amazing for two reasons, the healing totem and the summons. Yes, 8 snakes can get AOEd, but you don’t really face a lot of casters in DnD. Most stuff you see are melee or ranged in this game. Yes, it would be easy for a DM to have a wizard in the back during every fight, just waiting for the Druid to summon and drop a fireball on them, but that doesn’t happen. Upcasting conjure animals with boosted stats is amazing. 4 giant vultures wreck shop. Healing everyone with a cure wounds is legendary. It’s a fantastic subclass. I have played 4 Druids as well, and I gotta say Wildfire is epic because of the spirit and boost to fire damage, and stars is right behind it. Wildfire, shepherd, stars, S Tier. Moon….falls off hard from lvl 6 up. Moon is the one shot king. Lvls 2-5, it crushes and will make every other player feel insignificant. It’s a douchebag pick for one shots.
Love the videos! I was wondering, where do you get you dnd B-roll videos and images? I see lots of official dnd photos and other things, and have been wanting to add similar things to my videos. Thanks for the great content (:
As another has mentioned, you have a choice of using a BA or an attack during your Attack action. What's fun at 17th level, with Swift Quiver, you can make 2 BA attacks, have your companion make 2 attacks as part of 1 attack in you Attack action and then you make a 3rd attack with your 2nd attack of your Attack action for 5 attacks. Also, you didn't mention what I feel is the best part of the Beast Master - it's the only class with a companion where the companion moves on your turn, not after. It reflects how much more fluid you and your companion are compared to a Battle Smith or Drakewarden.
Awesome! Mind-blowing! I am now subscribed. The only one of these that I would be reluctant to use is the kick-down-the-door scenario, since it denies the players too much agency. At least one person in the group is going to say, “Wait, my character would never approach the situation this way.” I agree that *in medias res* is a promising approach, but the “res” shouldn’t require the DM to take the characters’ reins from the players. That’s why I like the “falling” scenario better. The “flashback” starter would be particularly good for players (like me) who enjoy writing detailed backstories, because the backstories immediately come into play.
On 5., Idk if anyone has seen pointy hat’s Druid lich video but I think it would fit really well as a BBEG because their magic and them using the land for their own preservation could be corrupting the forest creatures
