Wonderful reminders and tips!! One tip I have is grow your own - we enlarged our garden this year and we did so much freezer jam, spaghetti sauce, pesto, onion relish, in addition to the fresh lettuce and produce and fruit. I can't wait to add it up at the end of the season and see how much we saved! I would also put food by the road if we had extra and it felt so great to share with our community when we had an abundance.
Hey sis, mom of 13 here. Buffer your egg layer with cheese on one side & a protein on the other to keep your bread choice from getting soggy, during reheat. I pretoast bagels, ciabatta bread, & english muffins. Also, I only wrap in foil if I'm going to reheat the batch in the air fryer (otherwise I just wrap it in a paper towel for quick transfer to the microwave). ❤🙌
I totally agree with you that washing the veggies and prepping everything definitely takes the longest. Especially when it’s only you doing it all without anyone else to help. I enjoy canning because I love to use the things I grow in my garden to make ingredients I use in recipes everyday which saves me money in the long run. I don’t like to waste food and love finding ways to save and preserve it. I can a lot of tomato based items and pickled items since we always plant a lot of varieties of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.
@@CraftyCassie6910 yes to all of this! lol this is why we do it too! I will say I am working on my gardening skills still but I am getting better with practice. Thank you for sharing! Still trying to find a good marinara sauce recipe if you have one that’s your favorite?
@@AutumnLeighatHome the best marinara sauce I’ve made was a recipe I got from Just the two of us homestead. The lady on that channel also has an awesome trick to help take out the extra water so you don’t have to simmer the sauce to thicken for hours.
use leftover meat, rice veggies in tacos. My kids dont like veggies . So, I just "bury them in taco meat, roll em throw in shredded cheese that i grate(cheaper&healthier). One child does not like quinoa...the world's perfect food.smh, one doesnt like br rice. Guess who has leftovers? Not me anymore. If I can disguise it....I do. Then theres always meatloaf.;)
I love this! Great ideas! We love doing this in our house too! I haven’t tried with tacos yet though so I will have to try that in the future 😃. We purée veggies and hide in soups a lot too which they love!
I am totally a roasted veggie person! I grew up thinking veggies were just gross because id only known steamed or boiled. Imagine my suprise when I grew up and learned to cook for myself! I am now nearly vegetarian out of sheer joy and love of veg!
Same! We only ever had steamed or boiled growing up. My kids LOVE roasted veggies. They are fantastic and there are so many options for roasted veggies! lol I have to say I love my bacon but I will take some roasted veggies too! My favorite is roasted broccoli 😊
Good, actionable advice. I appreciate your flexibility of thought. For example the rewards points. I don't use them myself, but if someone genuinely achieves savings (or joy, without extra cost!) Your advice opens up a way to build that into frugality. I get a lot of joy from old fashioned skills and alternative resources (foraging, sharing, dumpstering, repairing, reusing....) but I very much fell off the wagon after a series of major life changes. I am slowly finding my stride again! And paring down my expenses and rediscovering the old ways.
I also adore preserving! I just (with careful thought!) Invested in an upgrade to my broken dehydrator (I ran 3 of the cheap ones into the ground, so I felt totally confident in investing in a better one), and I have been obsessively dehydrating things. I just made beet powder and intend to dye my hair with it, as well as using it for borscht later on (my family loves my borcht).
@@coyoteinthepool I love this! Yes I hope to help others with tips that almost seem common sense but when you think about it and actually apply are soooo helpful! These work with my family and all of those little changes add up to make a big difference! I have loved learning about canning and gardening. There are so many avenues to take with all of it that I would love to try! I definitely don’t want this to become a lost art. Thank you for sharing your adventures too! You will have to let us know how the beets work for hair dye!
USDA says a solid year for freshness however most homesteaders will tell you that as long as you followed the instructions and processed correctly it lasts years. All of mine have been eaten much sooner than that so I haven’t pushed the time frame. lol great question! ask.usda.gov/s/article/How-long-will-home-canned-food-keep# 10:35
You only have a fruit fly problem when you leave fruit out uncovered. If you set out your sourdough starter you will attract fruit flys 😅then you will have a fruit fly problem.
Thank you for the tip! We have washed and bagged all fruits and veggies and have been working on catching and getting rid of the fruit flies still there.
Sorry about Tucker, you must really miss him, but your new girl is lovely. She has very similar colouring to my Frodo, who was the best dog in the world. And yes, pointers do need a lot of exercise - mine needed at least two hours a day as he was a retired hunting dog. I'm surprised though that she has a docked tail, that practice has thankfully been banned where I am.
Yes, they still dock the tails here. It was done before we decided to get her. She has been really sweet but lots of energy lol. We have to make a point to give her a chance to get all the energy out. Frodo is a cute name!
@@AutumnLeighatHome He was named after Frodo Baggins, "the most famousest of hobbits". He was five when I adopted him. The two big dogs I have now I adopted when they were around Daisy's age and oh boy, so much energy. They are two years old now and still as crazy as when they were little. Thankfully I have a pretty big yard for them, because walking three dogs on the leads is impossible. Make sure little Daisy has a lot of exercise and something to chew on and she will be happy and won't wreck the house. I have lost a sofa, an armchair, countless shoes, towels, rugs, bedding and a coffee table - they chewed it to bits.
@@theclumsyprepper haha you have your hands full for sure! Tucker never really chewed on things so it was a little different. Daisy loves to chew lol. She is learning though. Pretty much fully potty trained now so just gotta get the chewing under control and she will be good! Frodo sounded sweet! Sorry about your furniture!
@@AutumnLeighatHome I used to say that they are helping me declutter 😂. Glad Daisy is getting on so well, she really is a beauty. My dad was a hunter so I grew up with pointers and, much as I love my current dogs, they are still my favourite breed.
Great question! It is one feeding however I had two quart sized jars of discard that made 4-5 pizzas depending on how big you made the pizza. I spread it pretty thin to make it thin crust pizzas. 😊 hope that helps!
Sam's Club has better prices than Costco. Costco has a lot of fancy stuff you won't find in Sam's Club. If you have a BJ's in your area it is somewhere in between Sam's Club and Costco as far as the merchandise they carry.
Sadly we don’t have a BJs but I have heard good things! Thank you for describing! I have never been in a Costco but I have heard they have more of the organic type brands too whereas sam’s is very mainstreamed brands.
Moving my garden area to the front/side yard/drive way or else I would need to kennel my garden area or kennel my pug & beagle who love everything about the garden especially my broccoli/ cauliflowers.
I use plastic containers to store portions making sure to just put a label using masking tape with contents, serving size and date. Make sure to turn the edge of the tape under for eady removal. I use rubbermaide made in america. 😊
I have looked into buying from a local farmer or butcher and that is actually more money and sadly outside of our budget at the moment. I am not giving up though! That is a goal of mine! Thank you so much for joining us! 😊
@@AutumnLeighatHome stores like piggly wiggly, food lion, save a lot, food for less, type of stores not a local farmer or a private butcher. And You’re welcome
Agree with the trash bags!! I read somewhere this past week that any pods detergent or dishwasher that they clog up your washers. I get detergent pods at dollar general on Saturday $5 off $25 sometimes and use on vacation to do our laundry. But the clogging up because the pods don’t dissolve good I don’t use anymore. OH and the paper towels too!! Members mark are just as good as bounty!
🙌🏻 Agreed! I think I heard that about the pods too. We use liquid dish soap for the dishwasher but I wonder if it causes the same problem with a laundry machine? That is good to know about the $5 off. Thanks for sharing!
If I'm not keeping my meat long time , I use old bread bags to freeze hamburger and some chicken when I buy the large family pack. Reuse your bread bags anything that isn't for long term
Hey I wanted to make your day by this comment! You know you can be anything you want in life if you work hard for it . God blessed 😇 you ! And those sound delicious 😋 maybe I will try it lol 😆 bye 👋
