I had the pleasure of seeing two performances of this production live at San Francisco Opera when it premiered in 1989. Since it was cut off at the end of this video, I need to report that the entire house EXPLODED in cheers and applause at the end of this chorus. One of the great ovations, deservedly so, in my 50+ years of attendance at San Francisco Opera. The scene is a masterpiece of combining visual and musical impact. This video also makes me both grateful for the quality of productions the company was able to produce at the time, and regretful at how the company has fallen off since. The number of productions per year will sink to 5 next season from a high of at least 13. Productions are spare and cheap, usually in the Eurotrash style; the singers are of highly variable quality; and very few of the "name" singers can be afforded anymore. This is a great memory of what has been and what might be in the future if they can find the money.
Probabilmente il più grande Fidelio della storia Tenstedt inarrivabile trascinante dinamico coinvolgente emozionante cast stellare orchestra e coro meravigliosi. STORICO.
Thank you! I posted an analog and low quality of this same video. I have been wishing someone would post with this quality of video and sound. I am delighted to be outdone!
На RU-vid есть полная запись этой постановки, но в плохом качестве, к сожалению(( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U9ISLZEHfxw.html&t (A. Boito "Mefistofele", Florenze (1989) - M. Arena, S. Ramey, A. Cupido, G. Glyndenfelt, D. Dessi)
Totally agree, I still remember hearing this broadcast and being completely taken in and swept away. I don’t think I’ve ever heard more exciting and inspired music making than in the finale.
