His main treats are home-baked liver (diced into small cubes) and quarter slices of sausage (highest value). To vary things I might include bits of cheese or dried natural treats like duck fillets or buffalo jerky
Argo is so handsome. Good job handling the resource guarding. Basenjis can be a challenge, especially when people use more negative training methods. In the late nineties I took my first basenji to a “traditional” trainer who trained retrievers and using those techniques is a big regret of mine. Since then, I use positive reinforcement with my basenjis and it works just as well or better.
I'm thinking of maybe getting a Basenji someday.... is it luck of the draw whether they can behave this well, or really down to your leadership? I love the relationship you have with your dog, it's inspiring! I also love that whistle, because I hate shouting after a dog, especially when they ignore you, it's kind of humiliating!!!😅
I love these dogs. My mom has owned 3 of them, and they all had different temperments. Her first was a lot like Argo and took a lot of work to get him to not have food aggression. Her second one is probably the chillest Basenji in existence. Will let you touch him whenever or take his food, and he won't care. He loves just about anyone. She recently got a female pup as a companion for the second one. She's much more like a typical Basenji and is a handful to train. They are very intelligent dogs and require a lot of attention. Anyways, great job on Argo! Hes a beautiful boy.
Thank you for sharing your story. Basenjis truly are one of a kind and each one has their own temperament. It's such a refreshing change when I meet an extremely chilled and gentle Basenji.
I also have had 5 Basenjis over many years. That’s a beautiful boy and great video. When I had 2 Bs, off leash they would disappear. My last Basenji (Simon) would return (most of the time) to me to be assured I was close by. Wws
Very cool! I trained my old B to jump onto a 130cm plyomeric box, and my new B is very springy too - he often jumps straight over larger dogs if they get in his way at the dog park. I’d love to find some tractor tyres!
Heard them land, but still didn't know where. I have repeated this exercise many times without making a noise :) He NEEDS to track the scent otherwise it will take forever to find them.
Any dog is capable of being off leash or fetching, you just have to learn the best way to challenge their minds and what techniques work best for them individually.
Amazing that he did not go after the horses and that he stopped on command for you. That is something most Basenjis cannot be controlled with. I've had 5 Basenjis in my life and not had the success you seem to have. Great dog you have!
Thank you! I introduced Argo to horses when he was about 10 months old. He used to think of them as huge dogs and race after them from one end of the field to the other. Zero recall. Luckily I found a local stables and got him to carefully get up close to some horses. After failing to get them to chase him on a few occassions, he soon lost that fascination in horses and even began ignoring them entirely. However, there is still a risk if they are galloping away at full speed! The horse riders are aware that doing that can trigger dogs and will always ask if it's okay first.
Thank you for sharing your life with Argo, this was a great video. Basenji's offer so much love, entertainment and of course some challenges along the way. Love you and Argo!!!
What a handsome B and a great place to get some exercise. You have a great relationship with your dog and it shows as he considers you pack leader. Loved the video, hope to see more.
I trained my Basenji since she was 3 months old, and when we go out to pet stores and etc… everyone is impressed how well behaved she is for a 1/5 years old dog. Takes a lot of love , patience and consistency, but they are highly intelligent dogs, and it’s really rewarding when they get older.❤
Thank you for your video. My Basenji is 14 weeks old and recently displayed his food aggression. It was a rather scary moment, kind of like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I'll try your method and I'll be wearing my thick welding gloves. 😂
No, you shouldn't need the gloves! 😂 I go into more detail in the description of this video. You want to get to a point where you do not need to interrupt his eating unless it is necessary (like picking up chicken bones while on a leash walk). Be patient and you will get there. Enjoy your little Prince!
Had a basenji female on a hike and we got lost as night rapidly began to fall. It was a little scary, then we asked the dog to lead us to the car. She understood what we wanted and led us back!
