So, nobody in that documentary talked about Fela Kuti in the United States of America. Are we for real? He just went to Europe and Ghana. It's insane how Ghanians and Nigerians are arguing over these musical influences when Ghanian Highlife is literally rooted in BLACK AMERICAN JAZZ! Get for real please. Ghana didn't create Jazz! Ghana didn't create Funk! Highlife sounds zero like what Fela did. Fela's music had a strong funk/jazz sound. That highlife was latent and not the principal sound of Fela Kuti. And, even from his own words, his music changed after his visit to the USA and being around during the Black Power area in the USA. You folks are funny as Ghanians to claim highlife was the primary or principle root of Afrobeat. Please. It may have been one of the founding sounds, but it definitely wasn't the dominant sound of Fela's work. Throughout this whole documentary, I am hearing Black American music mentioned. Also, you cannot leave out Fela's influence by the Black Power Movement when he visited the USA and how the funk of James Brown at that time and jazz contributed to his music in a major way.
I just learned about this documentary this year and started watching it. It is a little aggravating to watch because it was too much jumping back and forth between the timeline and eras of the music. It should have been broken down by eras, meaning, follow a timeline and not jump back and forth between years. It was going by special categories vs. the eras of that time. It should have been an era for the 90's and origins, then the era of the early 2000's, Mid-2000's, and, finally, the current time. In short, the editing should have been better. It's still a decent documentary to watch b/c it is informative, but it was just a huge miss with not placing the content in eras vs. all these sub categories jumping back and forth through the years.

Useless vuvuzella, intellectually uncurious and diligently dislocated individual... how can you make such an inflammatory statement if you actually know and admired FELA as you claimed.... Afrobeats didn't start 1999
