Welcome to Jay Peck’s Lost Rivers Fishing. Thanks for stopping by.
We are a team of New York State Licensed and Insured Fly Fishing Guides. Offing year round guided catch and release fly fishing trips on many of the glorious streams rivers of New York State including the famed Salmon River in Pulaski NY. We fish for Salmon, Steelhead, and migratory Trout on many of the Lake Ontario tributaries of the Tug Hill region and Western NY. We also fish for Tout on the beautiful inland streams through New York state. In the summer months we also offer excellent opportunities to fly fish for Bass and Northern Pike.
I'd rather do the small creek fishing. The rivers i fish like the cohocton and Neil creek are small. And i can read that wayer better than the bigger Rivers.
Do you think the salmon fishing will be decent 3rd week of October? That’s when we are heading up and wanna get your opinion on if you think we could get into them still.
Thanks for the interest Paul! Right now, it's salmon boxes (either a box of wets / streamers or intruder-style flies)...as we move into steelhead season, we'll do a box specific to them. Feel free to email me at jaypeckguides@gmail.com with additional questions,
We need rain like REAL BAD. pouring rain with 50 degree nights and pouring rain. Like 2 days straight ... hell I'll take 3! ain't looking good out till next Sunday basically zero rain in forecast except for lowering temps. Hopefully the week after next blesses us with some rain. I'm dying DYING to get on some chrome steel and it ain't gunna happen until that water temp drops AT Very least. .. nice push of water accompanied by that would do the trick and I'm guessing a BIG trick. We'll see...
Thanks for the heads up jay. Def been a slow start to the salmon run. Not surprised given the temps and little rain but like u said things are changing quick. We are hoping to be out there in the next few weeks or so. Hope i run into ya up at the upper fly zones, would love to buy a box of your flies. Good luck to you and your guides! Fish on! 🐟🎣
Thanks! A bit of rain would definitely help. I'll be on the water the next few weeks and hope to see you out there. On the fly box, email me at jaypeckguides@gmail.com.
Good to see you back Jay. Was up two weeks ago hooked about 10 fish in total landed 2. All came from the fly zones. Be back this Mon , Tues, fingers crossed. All the best.
Trying to swing flies on the salmon river is frustrating unless you want to stand in one spot, repeating a 20' swing. And of course, someone has to jump in immediately below you, having no clue about swinging flies. Trying to explain it turns into an argument.
It can definitely be a frustrating experience during the heart of the run. That said, there's a lot of water and usually, if you ask, many fellow anglers oblige. Just the other day, a young angler was coming off a stretch to re-rig and it was good swing water so we asked him if he'd mind if we share - we capped the day off with a king on the swing!
I detest using additional weight. Constant snagging & fear of becoming a 'lifter' , its a slippery slope. 😂 Why not just use a fast sink mow tip and heavy flys? Maybe not enough time to sink in short tight situations?? Appreciate all your info and everything I've learned from you...tight lines...🤗
Good question! The answer depends on conditions, the water you are fishing, and how you want to fish. In the current flows, a light mow tip and unweighted flies seems to work well in the classic run. However, for the deeper slots, you might need a bit of weight to help or a big mend.
Fishing reports are never accurate, ask 3 different people get 3 different answers. Remember 10% of the anglers catch 90% of the fish or something like that. I’ve got no skin in the game and live about 45 minutes away and heard the fishing has been pretty lousy especially if you’re paying $100 for the privilege to catch taxpayer funded salmon. Maybe the new moon on oct 3 ish will trigger something who knows.
They don't call them "fish tales" for nothing. All joking aside, we do our best to tell it like it is when it comes to our fishing reports. We're on the cusp of the run...just need a push of water and some colder temps.
Hi Jay, I hope all is going great with the BEST FISHIN' GUIDE IN NY STATE and BEYOND! I was just telling a guy in Virginia about you this morning! You knows? You might get an email from him and his buddies soon! I also told him that you were the BEST! I'll keep an eye out for your next video, as I always do! That day fishin' last October -- well, I sure LOVED it! Hopefully, I will be in contact with you in the future to go fishin', my friend! Yes, sir, hopefully! Take care, Mike
Jay, thanks for passing along your knowledge regarding tube flies, I have been tying my own flies for the past 30 years and just discovered lately tube flies - another rabbit hole to fall down - your knowledge transfer is just what I was needing.
Hello from Ohio. Getting ready to head to the salmon river and curious to know the current conditions. Jay, how about a new river report please?? Thank you!
