I'm surprised how gentle your flare was, and that it didn't result in a whack with a topless glider. Was there wind? Doesn't look like there was much

That cliff deserves at least a small wooden ramp built over it! Looks somewhat scary, the cliff isn't too deep of a dive until the trees below. Any mistake and you hug a tree there!

Reminds me of the time in 1976 near Klickitat, Washington where we went up to a launch area and a guy asked us to help him launch. We took the ends of the wings and walked up to the edge and he signaled to let go and he stepped forward and rapidly lifted up and soared high above us. Soon he was hundreds of feet directly above us. It was a thrilling sight/experience not to be forgotten. .

At Dog Mountain near Mt St Helens, there is a Low Level training route which is populated by A-6's from NAS Whidbey Island, and you can hear the roar of them coming down the valley at 450 knots; being out in the open, you look to where the sound is, until you realize they are about 3/4 mile past where you think, and moving very fast. As HG pilots YOU need to be aware, because they will not see you until you are a hood ornament. Using a 75 knot trike as a slalom cone is fun, thought: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qt9a9P6rtl0.html

Excellent! I'm particularly interested to see you getting airborne with the aid of a trolley based on just 2 relatively small wheels, off a grass field. Then I see you landing with the aid of the same thing, so no need for running while supporting the weight of the glider during takeoff and landing. Were you aero-towed or was this a winch launch?

cool... it looks like he is puling a cable on the wingtip to turn... back in the days, you could only change your CM on the bar.... thats amazing!

No, it's still a purely weight shift glider. The sidewires are lightly loaded in straigt and level flight because of the carbon x-bar replacing the kingpost being rigid in both + and - G,s.

I saw that too and also at 26:30. I am a new h2 pilot and haven't experience that yet. What causes a "pothole" and what should you do when you encounter one? Thanks for the video. I grew up in the neighborhoods you flew over and it's awesome to see it this way 😀
@ericoschmitt
@ericoschmitt Год назад
@@mexikids Happy to see a new pilot! I'm not sure Michael will get an alert as you replied to the thread, not his comment. Anyway, I wrote pothole but it's just turbulence. This is air masses moving in different directions next to each other. They are caused by rotors, thermal activity, or wind sheers. A rotor is the turbulent air flow downwind of an object. Think of a rock in a river, after the water passes around it the water will be turbulent. The faster the water flows, the more white bubbles and turbulence behind that rock. It's the same with air around mountains, or houses, or trees. Fly behind those and things get shaky. Then there are thermals which are pockets of rising air, hotter than the air around it. There will be either a bubble or a column of air going up, and usually the air right next to it will be going down to compensate. When you fly from one air mass into the other... bump! Last there are wind sheers, less common, but it's when you have wind blowing in different directions at different heights (air gradient), and sometimes the change is abrupt and in opposite directions. I recommend you to start reading the hanggliding.org forums. It is a knowledge gold mine. Not very active these days as everyone is on social media. It's a pitty as youtube and facebook comments are 'lost' with time and not indexed in google searches. But on that forum there are discussions from 20 years ago that are very much worth reading. Just get going with whatever gets you curious, I learned so much there! there's a wiki section on that site too. Some pilots have personal websites with articles, like John Heiney for example. There are books as well!

that was a t-39 doing probably a VR route, so he was going about 300kts groundspeed. Trust me, a target that big is definitely visible at that distance and that speed.
