The reality is Universities aren’t set up for either a mission of social justice or truth. They are set up for a mission of profit. The same force is behind the profit of fragmenting truth. Yes the institutions have to course correct, but they can’t when portrait of maximum profit is incompatible with truth.

It’s a false choice between truth and social justice. Let me explain, social justice ie assimilation into the ruling class of empire is how civilization stays afloat. Without civilization, truth dies. The goal of the university is to keep the truth alive by divulging as much of it as as possible to maintain stability. The goal of the imperial power structure is to tell as few lies as possible, so that as much truth can be presented in the university as possible, otherwise, there’s not enough computing power in the heads of the elite to run the system. A perfect landing would entail universities being able to tell the entire unadulterated truth in a stable Republic without a standing army, as the founders intended. This is how to save both civilization and the truth. We are at least 50 years away from Utopia, and we might always be.

Factfulness is important, I guess, but succinctness is more important, and the point of being succinct is to get to the real goal, which is the truth.

They were supposed to release as much technology as necessary to distract everyone away from the behavioral sink. Frankly, I think they got it just about right. Not sure what we are going to do next, however. There was never really a plan for the day after. Maybe the Amish should be in charge?

Social media has become hypnotical media. We have to be so careful with it. There's a workbook called 30 Days Without Social Media by Harper Daniels that should be shared.

Off to a slow start for Rauch but hang in there for the dialogue.

Thank you for posting the recording of this event. I try to watch all Jonathan Haidt's lectures and podcasts on the effects of social media on children and on society in general. I am also a fan of Rauch's work which I learned about on one of JH's podcasts. But the only thing I have a slight problem with is this: I wish Jonathan Rauch would use a different example than the 2020 election to make his point. Just before I watched this, I was actually watching a podcast with Victor Davis Hanson and Cleta Mitchell discussing election integrity. Please understand that there are intelligent, reasonable, decent people who don't agree with him about this topic. And they, like him also care deeply about the changes in important institutions in our society.

Such a shame that this important topic took a political turn. It certainly limited the number of people I would have felt comfortable sharing it with.

Thank you for sharing! Excellent conversation! Have you thought about complementing these views with the fisiological and anatomical features studied by works of Dr Iain McGilchrist, Michael Levin and Nazareth Castellanos, and the complexity dimension that Cesar Hidalgo, Ricardo Hausmann and Joseph Tainter can bring to the table?

1:29:23 "All the evidence shows we are not as divided as we have been led to believe. And we can reduce our vulnerability to the social media madness. If we start to doing the work ... where you can begin to rebuild those bonds of trust. And one by one, individual by individual, then group by group, then community by community, we have changed America that way before. Just ask Alexis de Tocqueville - we have a genius for it, according to him. We can do it again."

Excellent discussion. I'd drop the Russian disinformation nonsense. Hilary Clinton lost that election because she was a garbage candidate, not because of the Ruskies disinforming. People were informed about Hilary Clinton and came to the conclusion that she sux. Because she does. Her nonsense about denying that she lost that election was just as bad as Trump's nonsense about him not losing his election. As far as foreign disinformation, it exists, but is no worse than American disinformation - so you can lump it all together as political disinformation and not go around make distinctions for useless Hilary's benefit.

Very compellingly stated from the devil's advocate at 27:50. I can get on board with that view but I fear the advocates are a little less temperate.

I don’t consider God was the one creating confusion using mass media, a group of people is the one in control. If we want to resolve a problem we need to choose the right target.

Lol cutting edge? The law is the law. Stop thinking so hard about this guys…. We have these rights full stop. The only reason we don’t…is because low IQ Judges and lawyers keep trying to find something different, in order to push an agenda. Leave people alone!

Great work Eugene. Very clear and well argued. I agree that policy goals can't be undertaken without careful attention to infringement is constitutional rights. Speech is particularly important and any impediment to it has to be intensely scrutinized.
