Lonnie LaLane was the trumpet player. Bobby Nunez played sax. Bobby and I both played sax for Stephen F. Austin HS band. Bobby was a great musician that I admired. That boy could hear a new song and within 10-15 minutes, he was playing the song in his sax. Great times, Bobby!
This line-up of musicians were probably her best collaboration. I believe strongly they brought out the best in her. The band was on par with her level of talent. The guys (later to be known as Romance, on their own) were each seasoned sessions musicians, who had the gift of arranging. Therefore, they’d take old Ranchera classics and rework them to sound contemporary and worthy of Laura’s gorgeous voice. All the releases from this album are of such high caliber and timelessness, they still sound fresh today. Just on a whole other level to the music she would later release with a constantly-revolving-door of backing groups. I have a personal memory: Her mother got tired of students and fans at Texas A&I University’s registrar’s office (where she worked) gushing about her daughter. It always held up traffic during first day registrations and made the poor lady red with embarrassment and guilt. But it was the first thing you heard as you arrived on campus for first year classes: “Did you know: The registrar here is Laura Canales’ mother!!!” Laura would take classes there, as well. But we never coincided, unfortunately.
🙌🏻 🙌🏻 🙌🏻 Who was the engineer on this album? He captured her voice so beautifully. I can hear every word and transition so clearly. There has yet to be a female in her industry with a purer sound than she had. May she continue to R.I.P.
Joe Lopez was the voice of the old grupo mazz but don't forget that Jimmy Grammy Gonzalez was and forever will be the master of disaster, the one who engineered the music, the unique sound of mazz, he arranged from start to finish the sound of mazz til the end. May you RIP my brother Mr Jimmy Grammy Gonzalez.❤🙏
