I was hoping to hear more about the actual mechanism and the “how’s” on a biological level, this was ok on an academic read but to much a “cut and paste” feel for my taste.
Hi Dr. Rosann. Calgary, AB mom here. I have been watching all your videos today because I have high belief that my 9yrd old daughter might be struggling due to anxiety or ADHD. I first wanted to know if ADHD was considered to be in the nurodivergency family? Summer time I notice her to be alot more calm though last year during school as well as the beginning of this school year she has so many meltdowns and tantrums. She also takes as long as she possibly can to get ready for school, almost as if she is avoiding these tasks so that maybe I'll just keep her home. I did ask her the other day which she replied that she didn't want to go to school. I know she struggles with focusing in school especially in math. So I'm thinking that she may have anxiety about it or maybe a learning disability, or maybe ADHD? How do I figure out what exactly she is dealing with without doctors here pushing medication? My husband I think is fearful because he doesn't want a "label" put on her, however, I think it would be selfish and very egoic to not get her the help and support she needs just because of that fear.
Such great insight. So thankful this info is being discussed at this level and we are able to hear from someone like Angela Powell. We need more info where parents can get resources and hear from someone that’s on the ground level that has walked through this and who is walking through it and telling other parents how to navigate through it all. It’s so difficult and knowing that there are parents like Angela out there fighting the good fight helps us to find the strength to keep going. Thanks for this.
if what you are saying is backed up by science, please, it will be really helpful to post citations in the description of your youtube videos (the way, for example, Dr. Russell Barkley does)
There are 41 pages of citations in my book, so you can buy that to learn more. Here is a blog on this: drroseann.com/15-side-effects-of-adhd-medication/
why not just add both the link to your book and the link to this blog post in the description of this video so viewers dont keep asking for citations or wondering where they can get more detailed reading materials on this. Not everyone has the time to write out a comment asking for these things.. if they are not showing up in the obvious place they'd expect them to be, viewers will just make up their own conclusions about their existence (or lack thereof and also your credibility).
Hi Dr. Roseann. Could neurofeedback be used to treat my slow processing disorder? I have difficulty comprehending, assimilating, retaining, and recalling information. Best regards, C.
Neurofeedback improves processing speed because when you train the neural networks (neurofeedback does this), you improve brain communication. It is one of the best benefits of neurofeedback! Hope that helps :) drroseann.com/brain-behavior-reset-program/
Ma'am i read ur blog about somatic ocd,and it was the best illustrative article on the topic i ever read,i first experienced the somatic symptoms at the age of 19,now i am 34,can i hv a conversation here or whatever medium you suggest,i noticed a new thing about somatic ocd which no other article on internet mentions.Please..,i hope u understand.
@@DrRoseann ma'am everyone say that hyperawareness causes conscious process but actually.. the hyperaware mind STOPS the automatic process resulting in doing them effortfully, the anxiety follows after.
I am a retired Developmental Preschool teacher and wish I had this knowledge 3 years ago when I had a PDA student in my classroom. She had every one of the characteristics you describe and I was often at a loss on how to help her. Recently I began teaching a Developmental Disabilities course at a local university and will be adding this video and other resources about PDA to our curriculum. Thank you so much for posting this information!
What happens when occupational therapy, diet change, and supplements haven't worked well enough? Our pediatrician wants to start a very low does Ritalin... I don't know what to do. Our son is about to get kicked out of Kindergarten.
Great question. Many people come to me in the same situation. It is about the right treatment, at the right time in the right order. Getting to the root causes is a critical part of the process that gets you to the right path.
Can a teen with combined type ADHD and PDA in autism also have NVLD? He's extremely smart, and does meet quite a bit of the criteria for PDA, but also for NVLD too. Is it possible for "milder PDA" to really be NVLD?
Nervous system dysregulation can show a variety of symptoms. A diagnosis should be thought of more as a guide to understand but it is really more common for an individual to have symptoms that cross into more than on diagnosis.
@@DrRoseann very good point. There are some symptoms of PDA though he's never really had, like using social strategies to get out of doing things (entering into role play or fantasy, saying he can't move, etc), etc. He does have demand avoidance, but on the other hand, he also has little spatial awareness and a bit of a klutz, once he hit higher maths (algebra, geometry), he's struggled, his cursive handwriting is horrid. He asks millions of questions, has to "label" and categorize info. But then again, he also has ADHD-C and level 1 autism...it's difficult to know where the symptoms of one end, and the other(s) pick up. I'm focusing on the NVLD so much primarily because he's struggling in yet another HS math class, after finishing grades 5-8 (4 years) math in just about 2-2.5 years, and he struggles with some other things at school, despite being identified as gifted. Is having him re-evaluated worth the effort in your opinion? I feel like the PDA profile was just thrown on there a bit haphazardly, with no real evaluation, just regular appts., so I'm leaning towards it.
unless is sth serious you can't play with sth like this you can destroy a kid's life forever and considering that you proved time and time again you don't know how to distinguish the left from the right lobotomies, the increased suicide in kids "treated" with ssri, the withdrawal and pssd
Why is it that some providers on the pandas list don't believe in Lyme so I'm still confused. And the other Dr keep telling me it's a hoax so now what now that I don't trust even the pandas Drs. One says pay for Cunningham then the other Dr says it has too many positives. So why did I just pay for the Cunningham. 12k later and I still don't know if it's pans.
Have you heard of Tria Alchemy? They have helped my adhd and other health challenges where others failed... I think the extra strength really made all the difference- check them out!
Hello! Sleep apnea is very serious and can absolutely affect attention, mood and heath. Have you consulted with a functional physician? drroseann.com/how-sleep-affects-kids-behavior-and-attention/
I’m 13 and at this point, I’m so done with drinking coffee, or taking hydroxyzine just so that I can complete half of one task or assignment. I talked to my therapist abt starting meds and I went through a very long process of evaluations both in school and in my therapy sessions. I made this choice to start meds and I’m starting non-stimulant meds soon. And my diet is balanced and I don’t eat sugary foods and junk food often. I don’t even drink soda, I hate the taste of soda. But I do agree with you and psychiatrists really do need to understand and really do deep evaluations for medication. I’ve lots of research on adhd meds and I have hopes of majoring in neuroscience or psychiatry when I go to college.
I work hard to create FREE content for all kinds of parents and kids. If this doesn't work for you read a book, change the speed or find an advocate in your area who can help. God bless
@@DrRoseann please I didn’t mean for you to feel I’m sending negative your way. I’m not upset and your work is greatly appreciated. It’s that maybe my ADHD was full blown today because I kept waiting to hear about the revision. Also I don’t know how to change the speed when live. You’re helping many families and please don’t feel discouraged by my feedback. I’m just one in a million
Thank you… ❤ my best friend started taking adhd meds at 8 and then he hung himself at 10. Now my fiancé’s son is 6 years old and was given Ritalin by his mom against his dad’s better judgment… wish the courts would listen that he’s way too young to be on adhd meds… 😢
I am so sorry this happened. How very sad. Thank you for sharing this because parents need to hear about just how dangerous this all too common medication is.
Thank you also for making this video! I have five children of my own, and I have been a PE teacher (gym) in the elementary schools. My own mother had trauma in her life and she lost her dad at age 10. I always kind of thought she was adhd ( but I really do see the effects of the trauma and she is 77 years old now)!! in my own life, being raised by my mom though loving, she struggled. Finally, at age 39 I went to a therapist, but was right, ready to get on medication in my own life when I wanted to get to the roots!!! I myself struggle with executive functions, and that is disregulated in itself (plus elderly parents or are ambivalent when it comes to spending time with grandkids)! Good friends have had a great influence on my life without having to car talk about ADHD everytime we get together!! do you have a psychologist constantly remind me was triggering in itself! It’s not who I am it is sometime I’ve always worked around as best as I could. My own doctor said that stress mimics ADHD. I am thankful that he was not ready to immediately prescribe medication for me but yet was offering Lexipro .. when I was diagnosed with GAD! I had a lot of stress trying to work full-time and also trying to be the best mom that I was able to be! The expectations at work we’re really weighing on me and new expectations being set… I could not be a robot. God is my refuge and strength, and ever present help in times of trouble. Thank you for this info!!!
Hi! I am a 21-year-old with diagnosed NLVD and currently studying psychology and child development. I never comment on RU-vid videos but I wanted to share my experience especially because this video was directed towards parents seeking information. One way that NLVD is misunderstood is how it can be compared and clumped together with autism. Myself, as well as others I’ve talked to with this diagnosis, feel that this is problematic. It places an oftentimes inaccurate expectation that we have social traits of a diagnosis that we simply do not meet the criteria for. With NLVD there are generally no fixations or sensory issues. Our problems with social interactions are generally less severe. They occur due to processing differences and not a lack of emotional connection/"understanding of others' perspectives" as mentioned in this video. As someone who has the pleasure of working with children on the autism spectrum, they are very socially different. At times I am a little awkward but no more than someone with social anxiety. We generally have high emotional intelligence. I have always struggled more with spatial processing and academic nonverbal processing like math (your strategies for that were spot on!). Just something to keep in mind that overgeneralization/comparison is something that neurodivergents are so used to seeing. but NLVD symptoms look so different on everyone! Thank you for reading my long comment and advocating for neurodivergent children as a professional!
Thank you! I’m going through this with hypermobility. I don’t have marphans so my doctor won’t recognize my symptoms as significant. I have gi symptoms a dysregulated heart beat and foggy brain and I have trouble healing from injuries, but I look fit so my doctors won’t consider my requests for care and treatment. They aren’t interested in preventative care or my random symptoms.
Hola soy de peru y mi hijo tiene autismo.y tiene la bacteria de esptrecoco mi.hijo empeoro y esta con combulciones y se autoagrede necesito ayuda como.puedo hacer.
I am a teenager who has PANDAS, MDD, seizures, tics, intense paranoia, hallucinations, and other mental and physical health problems. I’ve attempted suicide, I self harmed for three years, and I spent a few weeks in a mental hospital. I would just like to say to parents who have kids that are struggling, you are incredible. What is happening is just as unfair to you as it is to us. This is a traumatic situation, and nobody prepares us as the child or those who take care of us for this. I can’t speak for all, but my mom has struggled with a lot of guilt and anger over this. My dad tends to be overly optimistic about my situation, but it’s not easy for him either. I know there is no way for me to ever make it up to them, all of the late night ER trips, pulling all nighters for seizures or making sure I don’t try to run away when I can’t think straight. I am so incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done and continue to do. Wherever you are in this terrible journey, please know that it gets better. It takes far too long, in my case years, but it eventually starts to get lighter again. Your kid needs you, no matter how much they fight your help. It’s impossible at times to imagine feeling better, and when our parents are still optimistic we feel like they don’t understand how bad it is, and at least in my case that made me angry with my parents. I don’t know if this was helpful in any way, but all you need to do is love and be there for your kid, no matter how dark things get. You didn’t deserve this, and yet you are handling it in the best way you can. Thank you parents.
