hey, I appreciate the feedback! you're right, the front half of the video is kinda loaded with a lot of non-dev stuff, and I didn't really realize until I uploaded the video! Next one will be much better, promise!

A few tips from a fellow game dev, if you don‘t mind: - can you make the background move in paralax? In Godot this should be fairly easy to accomplish. I recommend having three layers: the sky, a city skyline and some items which move with ground. With that you could have different levels being easily distinguishable. Like a city, country side, forest, underground etc. - 5 bucks is a lot to ask. Maybe make it for free and ask people to buy more levels if they like the game. Your reach will be 10x. - I think marketing is going to be costly if you only have 5 dollars per sale. - try to have randomized pitches between .9 and 1.1 to have the few sound effects you have less repetitive. - you seam to go for a flow centric gameplay style. At the moment it doesn‘t look like there is much skill climbing in the game.

Oh and check the licenses of these assets you are using. Is that a Gulie street fighter death sound?

Always love the feedback! I did use the parallax node for 2 layers but you're right, adding more is definitely going to make the levels more interesting for sure. The feedback about price is great too! I'm hoping to launch a game with 60+ levels, but honestly I'm still learning what a good value for this sort of game is. I really didn't make this clear in the video (looking back its a bit of a mess lol), but yeah the sfx and music were all added to the video itself, not the game (spot on about the guile death noise tho haha). I honestly think I rushed this out a bit because I needed to make a video, so I really should have done a better job. That pitch thing for SFX is great though! that was one thing I was noticing when playing around with the video is that even though I have 5 sfx it was really repetitive. I'll implement that in the game! any other insight or tips you have are greatly appreciated! Thanks again for watching and giving feedback!

Very good points. I think every gamer should look into game development at least a little bit to get an appreciation for what's involved and what a fantastic job devs did to bring their visions to life. Focusing on a couple of key ideas and mechanics is important, especially when starring out. If you end up making similar games, you can reuse some code and systems again or expand on them, but it is hard not to want to create it all now and build that grand epic game of your dreams, before the reality of the task (hill...no mountain) that's ahead of you dawns. :)

As someone starting out in (godot) game dev myself this is useful to hear. It's also easy to get stuck in tutorial hell and end up doing things you don't enjoy or are not clicking with you. Sometimes it's just best to dive into creating your own (very simple!) short games and research how to do things and tackle the issues as they come for the best learning. It's easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis and wanting everything to be perfect. Let's be honest most of our early games will suck or have major structural / bad practice in them, but the point at that time is to learn and become familiar with the engine etc., and have some fun and stay motivated! :)

Love your content, man! Just my kind of humor, and just the right amount as well. I'm a programmer professionally, and I can totally relate to the problems you've had - I still have them to this day. With 15 years of experience in various languages, I still sometimes find myself looking for an error that turns out to be a typo, or a blank space in a string variable, or something else incredibly elementary. What is helping me a lot with this is to rubber duck, i.e. explain the logic and the problem to a rubber duck (or some other object, I usually just talk to myself like a lunatic). I can't emphasise how many times I've been stuck on an error for hours and then when I finally ask a colleague, and start explaining my code, I find the error 5 seconds into my explanation. It happens all the time. All. The. Time. Anyway, your content is great, keep it up and don't be afraid to reach out should you ever need some assistance, cheers!

I cannot tell you how much this comment helped lol. I constantly make the same mistake of not making something a semi-colon or slightly mispelling something and my brain every time goes "why are you like this". Hearing that its common even for a professional definitely makes me go easier on myself haha

Hey man, I'm sorry you stumbled into the trenches of crunch time, but giving a game jam 100%, and doing so on your own, is the type of thing that is making this endeavor worth it. Taking a year off to pursue a dream only works if you have the drive to do something like this even though you could've backed out with effectively 0 external consequences. Great job!

Have a good time with your first game jam! Beware that "Game Jam Hell" could be a trap as much as Tutorial Hell, even if it's less talked about. It's super tempting to go on fresh new ideas instead of debugging/polishing your current projects, and game jams are a perfect excuse for that.

Wrapping your head around signals as a concept is a big leap :) and once you are familiar with the concept, it's only a tiny step from there to make your own, initializing them just like a var, and emitting them when you need to communicate anything up the tree, including values or whole objects - in case you need a signal that isn't already build-in like the collision-related ones I wonder if you started keeping score with an autoloaded Global var - that was another game changer for me when I got introduced to those :)

Great video, loved it, and such a common problem. You nailed it here and how many of us have that same doubting voice that holds us back and prevents us from growing and achieving: "good stuff is what others create, you're not good enough to do the same, just give up!" I'm learning to accept it's a journey and to aim for those little incremental wins and improvements. If you're just 0.1% better at something than the last day then those add up over the course of weeks, months and years - keep at it. :)

Good luck with your endeavors, however. What you especially learned is that you will not earn enough money with your games, unless you strike gold. Thomas brush needs the course to live his extravagant lifestyle: Getting a 5000K electric bike, buy 24 acres of land, buying houses. He sells the indie game dream via his course. In all hope you have spend 50% of his 1K course. Please note that EVERYTHING in that course is available for free by true professionals not salesmen. my 2 cents.

Why does learning to programme always come down to making money :/ Sometimes you just want to learn a skill, without setting out to strike gold. Where in this video is a paid course even mentioned? -- and even if someone does pay for a course, so what if the person who sold the course has a nice lifestyle. Their lifestyle doesn't matter, what matters is if you found the course valuable to your learning journey.
