I had the pleasure of meeting Ernie Wise and his wife on a few occasions as a serving Police Officer. They lived on my Police beat, and every Christmas day Ernie would purposely activate his intruder alarm which necessitated a visit from the police! On arrival the officers would be greeted by Ernie and his wife and offered a drink; non alcoholic of course 😂 and a mince pie! Happy memories!

Id forgot how bad it was, I grew up in a village where everyone was white and very racist. An African couple moved in over the road and went to every door to introduce their selves. From that day on so much changed for the better. This show was on the TV at the time and was seen as a piss take of racists. The sad thing is it feels like things are going back.
The character is racist, he is the point of ridicule. People are and did miss the point at the time. The actor Warren Mitchel who played Alf was a left wing jew and very anti racist.

The "tarmac your drive" line came from drinking 6 pints of Guinness - the preferred drink of an Irish road worker who were known to take any spare tarmac around the houses and offer to tarmac their drive for cash. A slightly obscure reference.

I was only 8/9 when this came out so wasn't allowed to watch it, too 'adult'! Watching clips years later the sense was that the white man was the most ignorant and the black couple were more respectable and maybe 'civilised...so they were taking the mickey out of ignorance of the unknown and the fear/unreasonable response it cpuld illicit back then when the UK was mostly white. I grew up in Scotland, which is 95% white to this day, and apart from the likes of Mohammed Ali, The Jackson 5 and so many other musicians and artists, and American 'Blaxploitation' shows and films on the tv, I didn't see a 'real life black person until 1981 and moved to Manchester. I ended up living in a predominantly black area in London for 26 years and never had any issues. Interesting to watch it from your point of view though, because I can't walk in those shoes.
