I'm an award-winning documentary and portrait photographer/filmmaker. I am the guy that shot the album packaging for Blink 182's Enema Of The State (the nurse photo)
Since that album, I've gone on to work for many publications including The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, Rolling Stone, Spin, People, etc. I've worked extensively in India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and the Northern Territory of Australia. My focus is to bring attention to issues and causes such as human rights, maternal health, and marginalized people. For the last few years I've been working on a self-assigned project I call "The Motorcycle Portraits" in it I feature individuals whose lives are deeply connected to motorcycles. Racers, builders, collectors, and world travelers. I will be sharing videos from this series here, I hope you enjoy it.
Do you need proof of insurance to fly the bike? Looking to buy a bike and have it fly back with me not sure how I’d get insurance. Please let me know it’s within Canada
How is the vibration? Meaning can you see it down the road or is it jiggling around a lot ? What size is that table Carpe Iter ? Was wondering aobut Active 3 or 4 or 5 Galaxy and same apps that you use. Not sure best size either and how to mount on my Tiger 900 Rally Pro... Great video. Thanks !!!
I have no issues with vibration, I use the Carpe holder which has rubber mounts. The unit sits tight without bouncing around at all. You would have to inquire as to how to mount it to your specific bike. Hope that helps.
Did you consider another device like a tablet (Active Galaxy etc). YOu could have if you're not using the DMD2 software. I think yours has MORE NITS for brightness in the sun etc too. @@TheDavidGoldmanphoto
@@kee7678 I did not consider another one. I started using DM2 but after a while, I figured it was not really needed so I stopped using it. I love it and have been very happy with it for my needs.
Hi Dave! I am planning a trip from England to South East Europe ( Bulgaria). Wonder did you do any research into buying a bike in the UK, registering it and insuring it? Any tips you have about doing something like that instead of shipping your bike? Not planning on selling the bike but heard its hard to get insured if you are not a resident in the UK.
Hi @AlexHkolev, sorry, I have no info on that kind of thing. My bike is a US-registered bike and I came from Canada so that wouldn't apply to your trip.
Thanks, hopefully, they will get better. I just finished editing the first video from Dublin. I'll post that in a few days. If you are interested you can join my substack to read along as well: thedavidgoldmanphoto.substack.com/
Very helpful video David and thank you for sharing with us. My wife and I are planning a similar trip this year and were wondering if you needed a carne de passage for travelling in Europe. We are planning on going to Italy, Spain, France, etc. Thank you in advance for any information!
Hi @Kenjisan7970 if your bike is registered in the US or Canada then you will not need a Carne for Europe. You should be able to get a 90-day exemption for bringing in your bikes but definitely double-check all of that before booking flights. You will absolutely need "green card" insurance though. Hope that helps. Subscribe to this channel if you l ike as I'll be starting to post videos from the trip.
Hi@@TheDavidGoldmanphoto . Thank you so much for your reply! I'll look into the green card insurance and have subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to your videos from your trip. Ride safe as always.
@@kenjisan7970 Thanks!!. I'll be dropping my first "official"' video from this past summer and I'm almost done editing the second. If you like you can also follow along on my Instagram: @thedavidgoldmanphoto or my Substack where I talk a lot about the trip substack.com/@thedavidgoldmanphoto?
Nope, not since I realized it’s really only an app over the main unit. Sure, it looks cool but I found it better to just setup my home screen with the apps I’m most likely to use (Calimoto, Google Maps, I-overlander) vs being forced to look at apps I don’t really use. I should also add that I was not able to sync my bikes settings(RPM,speed, temperature etc) with the DM2 so it seemed like a waste. If I was able to sync then I might have been a bit more inclined to stick with DM2.
Thank you. I'm only at the early stages of working in motion so my vids are not too good yet. But, yeah the Carpe is amazing. With the adventure controller and it in your field of vision it makes life a lot easier. Even easier if you are already in the Android world.
afternoon David and thanks for the video. At the end you mentioned you would be doing another video to go over all the paperwork... are you still doing this video? And did you run into any issues with the paperwork or customs? Thanks in advance.
Hi 2Wheel4Fun, I have not done a video BUT I wrote an article about it in issue 87 of Upshift Online magazine: upshiftonline.com/blogs/magazine/upshift-issue-87-november-2023 in it I go pretty in-depth to what I ran into. As for your specific questions about customs/paperwork. the short answer is no, although when I landed in Ireland they did not know the rules about 90-day stays and exemptions etc. Same issue when I left from Paris to go back to Canada so my advice is that you FULLY know those rules and have a copy of them to show whomever you may need to either arrive without extra fees or leave with your bike. Hope that helps.
@@TheDavidGoldmanphoto Thanks for the speedy reply and looking forward to reading your article. I plan on flying it from Calgary to Rome this August. Thanks again for your help.
@@2Wheel4Fun Oh cool. Via WestJet? Rome in August ?? Wooohooo, that's going to be hot. Don't wear the adventure motorcycle snowsuit. You'll die. Let me know if you have any more questions. I learned a lot on this trip.
I am thinking about Scotland 🏴 to Canada 🇨🇦 (Halifax). The riding across Canada to Vancouver then returning from there. Any ideas of rough costs for shipping the bike?
@@KGowans I'm not really sure, I can only tell you what my costs were: Halifax - Dublin June 3,2023 = Freight Charge CAD $1,700.00 Paris - Halifax Sept 5, 2023 = Freight charges EUR €2,950.00 Hope that helps but obviously you will need to contact West Jet for more accurate and up to date costs.
Hi David. Thank you for clearing that up. As an avid motorcyclist and photography enthusiast I am thoroughly enjoying your multi-media portrait series. My 5 foot 4 wife just started riding again after a 15 year hiatus. Her bike is G650GS. As you can imagine when I got to Tammy Lewin, A.K.A. Mind Body Moto Girl, I jumped out of my seat to show her. She is now an avid follower of her adventures. We live in Honduras and its too bad we missed her on her way down. Thank you again for the technical help and inspiration.
@@Gushn Thanks for checking out the site!!! that is great to hear about your wife as well. In fact, I've photographed more than a few smaller female riders for the series and they are all as inspiring as the next. Check out the one on Megs_Braap or Ash Mhyre. Too bad you missed Tammy, she is a great person with such a positive attitude. Maybe I'll see you on the road someplace. David
I have a similar set up on my Triumph Tiger 1200 rally, I just use my phone as a hotspot and tether to the device for Wi-Fi, however I do use DMD2 with downloaded maps on the device the Wi-Fi is only if I rarely use google maps
What mounts are you using? Vibration an issue seeing it? and in the sun? I have Tiger 900 Rally Pro, and wondering what system to get now...I go to Baja and all over SoCal etc.
@@kee7678 i use a damped quadlock mount attached to my Garmin mount with 3d printed adapter, vibes are fine, the phone is a Samsung a34 with 1000 nits brightness and ip64 rated for waterproofness, it’s been great so far
The best way to get more info would be to go to the WestJet FAQ page but for international flights, you WILL need an agent. I used GSM. Here is the link: www.westjetcargo.com/en-ca/what-we-ship/motorcycles
David, I just listened to your interview on The Trail and adventure Motobike Podcast. Look forward to following your future adventures. I'm nearly retired and have started to photo/film my adventure riding. I'm heading to India in September for a 19 day tour from Bilaspur up to Kashmir. I plan to ride to South America in 2025 when work is done. I spent some time looking at your Portrait site and really like what you are up to. Safe Travels cheers from Vancouver.
Hi James, thanks for taking the time to watch (I know it's a bit dry) and checking out the series. Your trip sounds amazing!! I've spent a lot of time in India and I love it so much. I wish you a great safe trip and a happy retirement.
In 88' I took a 32 hour ferry from Newfoundland to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with the intention to ride across Labrador on my 78' Goldwing. I even picked up a spare gas can in Stephensville, NF. It started out ok, but several miles outside of town it turned into a sand and gravel pit type surface. Not sure how far I got, about 40 miles I guess. There were glacially rounded rocks in the road about the size of hardballs. It worked the forks so much that the fork oil got hot, thin, and acted like it was water. No shock absorption at all. The forks were bottoming out like a hammer, even at 10mph. It was a long way to go yet, just to get to Churchill Falls, so that little voice of reason in the back of my mind said, "What do say about turning around and just enjoy the week, while you wait on the next ferry to take you back?" Sound advice, the Goldwing is too heavy to toss in the back of a truck and haul it back. Now that most of it looks paved, I might try it again.
Hey Steve, that is an amazing story!! and on a Goldwing!! I bet it was crazy to see up close at that time. It's not totally paved just yet so if you wanted some challenge to complete the circle I'd give it a go sooner than later. Thanks for sharing!!
@@TheDavidGoldmanphoto You don't know how right you are about, sooner than later, I'll be 70 y/o this year. LOL The spot I found the most fun was a deep valley with soft sand at the top, going down towards a crooked one lane wooden bridge, and immediately up the other side...not knowing what the surface was going to be like. Actually, that would be twice, because I had to return on that road. Although my objective was not successful, the ride was, because I didn't crash.
It's possible, I was distracted trying to stay alive. I'm amazed at the comments I'm getting for some swearing. I do give a heads up in the description.
