Hi, sometimes they use ground wires that have no insulation. when you replaced it, you really should have used a black wire for a ground. A red wire looks like a positive wire, due to color coding practices on DC systems. Keep learning, you are off to a good start.
Those Ranchers are bulletproof. My family used to take vacation out in the black hills. We would bring the quads along. My Dad picked up a Rancher 420 one year. It was a straight axle, and only had rear wheel drive, no 4x4. I had the more fun on that rancher than any of the other quads. It went through everything I told it to. Very impressed by the Rancher. Ride safe, and have fun ripping that quad brother.
If you do decide to get some new tires I think the best bang for the buck full set of tires that aren't insane mud tires but better than stock that fit the rancher is the 25" kenda bearclaw ex.
